The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish. The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed. Pr. xx. 6. He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife but he that putteth his trust in the Lord shall be made fat. He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool; but whoso walketh

35 Though I should die with thee.] Ye know not what ye ask (said Jesus to Zebedee's sons and their mother), are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptised with the baptism that I am baptised with? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptised with the baptism that I am baptised with; but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. And he taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; and saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unte death: tarry ye here and watch. And he went forward a little and fell on the ground and prayed, that if it were possible the hour might pass from him. Mar. xiv. 32-35. And he came out and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down and prayed, saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done. And there ap peared an angel unto him from heaven strengthening him. And, being in agony, he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground; and when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, be found them sleeping for sorrow: and said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise, and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. While I go and pray yonder.] See verst 39. 42. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken nie, why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods over flow me.

And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and 37 began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto 38 them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little farther, and fell 39

38 My soul is exceeding sorrowful, &c.] O that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee: let my prayer come before thee; incline thine ear unto my ery: for my soul is full of troubles, and my life draweth nigh unto the grave. I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength; free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more; and they are cut off from thy hand. Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps: thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Lord, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me? I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted. Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off. Ps. lxxxviii. 1-7. 14, 15, 16. And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the Lord stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem. As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud, in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. And prayed.] And he (Jesus) went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed, that if it were possible the hour might pass from him. If it be possible.] There shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch that if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Mat. xxiv. 24. Wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the "king" ("Saul")! for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord. This thing is not good that the hast done. As the Lord liveth, ye are worthy to die; because ye have not kept your master, the Lord's anointed. And now see where the king's spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his bolster. 1 Sa. xxvi. 15, 16.
