43 from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and

that watereth, shall be watered also himself. Pr. xi. 24, 25. He that hath pity upon the poor, lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Pr. xix. 17. Cast thy bread upon the waters : for thou shalt find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, and also to eight. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand. Ec. xi. 1, 2. 6. Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke. Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? When thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? If thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul, then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday. Is. lviii. 6, 7. 10. Break off thy sins (said Daniel to Nebuchadnezzar) by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor. Da. iv. 27. Give to every man that asketh of thee, and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. Love your enemies, and do good and lend, hoping for nothing again. And be ye merciful as your Father also is merciful. Lu. vi. 30, 31. 35, 36. Give alms of such things as ye have, and behold, all things are clean unto you. Lu. xi. 41. When thou makest a dinner, or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours, lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind and thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee; for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. Lu. xiv. 12, 13, 14. If thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Ro. xii. 20. He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly, and he which soweth bountifully, shall reap also bountifully. Every man, according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give, not grudgingly, or of necessity, for God loveth a cheerful giver. 2 Co. ix. 6, 7. Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy. That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate, laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. 1 Ti. vi. 17, 18, 19.

For God is not unrighteous to forget your work, and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. He. vi. 10. To do good and to communicate forget not; for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. He. xiii. 16. Pure religion, and undefiled, before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. Ja. i. 27. If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body, what doth it profit? Ja. ii. 15, 16. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 1 Joka iii. 16, 17, 18.

43 Thou shalt love thy neighbour.] Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Mat. xix. 19. The second (commandment) is like unto it (the first commandment). Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Mat. xxii. 39, 40. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord. Le. xix. 18. And the second (commandment) is like (the first), namely, this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; there is none other commandment greater than these. And the Scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth; for there is one God, and there is none other but he; and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices. Mar. xii. 31-34. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Lu. x. 27. Owe no man any thing but to love one another, for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. xiii. 8. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour, therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Ro. xiii. 10. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Ro. xiii. 9. Brethren, ye have been called unto liberty, only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Ga. v. 13, 14. If ye fulfil the royal law according to the Scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well. Ja. ii. 8.

Ro.

hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless 44 them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye 45

And hate thine enemy.] And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nisi (i. e. the Lord my banner), for he said, Because the Lord hath sworn, that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation. Ex. xvii. 14, 15, 16. Thou shalt not seek their peace (of the Ammonite and Moabite) nor their prosperity all thy days for ever. De. xxiii. 6. Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt: Therefore it shall be that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. Thou shalt not forget it. De. xxv. 17. 19. O Lord, be merciful unto me (said David), and raise me up, that I may requite them (his enemies). Ps. xli. 10. Do not I hate them O Lord that hate thee? And am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with perfect hatred, I count them mine enemies. Ps. cxxxix. 21, 22.

44 Love your enemies.] If thou meet thine enemy's ox, or his ass, going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him. Ex. xxiii. 4, 5. My father, shall I smite them (said the king of Israel to Elisha). And he answered, Thou shalt not smite "them" ("who were sent by the king of Syria to apprehend Elisha"); wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive, with thy sword, and with thy bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master. 2 Ki. vi. 22. And the children of Israel carried away captive of their brethren (of Judah), two hundred thousand, women, sons and daughters. But a prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded, and he said unto them, Behold, because the Lord God of your fathers was wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a rage, that reacheth up unto heaven. Now hear me therefore, and deliver the captives again, for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you. So the armed men left the captives, and the spoil before the princes, and all the congregation; and the men took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of Palmtrees, to their brethren. 2 Ch. xxviii. 8-15.

If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me (yea I have delivered him that without cause is mine enemy), let the enemy persecute my soul. Ps. vii. 4. As for me, when they (the false witnesses) were sick, my clothing was sackcloth. I humbled myself with fasting, and my prayer returned into mine own bosom. I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother. Ps. xxxv. 13, 14. If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink; for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head: and the Lord shall reward thee. Pr. xxv. 21, 22. But I say unto you which hear (said Jesus), Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. Lu. vi. 27, 28. If ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? For sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again, and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest, for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Lu. vi. 34, 35. Father, forgive them (said Jesus from the cross), for they know not what they do. Lu. xxiii. 34. And he (Stephen as the Jews stoned him) kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge; and when he had said this, he fell asleep. Ac. vii. 60. Bless them which persecute you: bless and curse not. Therefore, if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Ro. xii. 14. 20, 21. (We the apostles) labour (said Paul), working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it; being defamed we entreat. Co. iv. 12, 13. Charity suffereth long and is kind, charity envieth not, charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things: charity never faileth. 1 Co. xiii. 4-8. (Who) when he (Christ) was reviled, reviled not again, when he suffered he threatened not: but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously. 1 Pe. ii. 23. Finally, be ye all of one mind; not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing, but contrariwise blessing. 1 Pe. iii. 9.

may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on 46 the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, 47 what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do 48 not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

45 Ye may be the children, &c.] See verse 9. and com. Behold, your house (Jerusalem) is left unto you desolate; and verily I say unto you, ye shall not see me until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Lu. xiii. 35. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1 John iii. 9. For he maketh his sun.] Is there any number of his armies; and upon whom doth not his light arise? Job xxv. 3. The Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works. Ps. cxlv. 9. He (the Almighty), left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. Ac. xiv. 17. See chap. xv. 27.

46 If ye love them which love you.] Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them. Mat. vi. 1. If ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again. Lu. vi. 33-35. What glory is it, if, when ye be buffetted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? But if when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not, but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously. 1 Pe. ii. 20-23.

Publicans.] As Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your master with publicans and sinners? Mat. ix. 10, 11. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a man gluttonous, and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. Mat. xi. 19. If "he" ("the brother that trespasseth") neglect to hear the Church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man, and a publican. Mat. xviii. 17. Jesus saith, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. Mat. xxi. 31. Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners, for to hear

"him" ("Jesus"). Lu. xv. 1. The publican (in the parable) standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. Lu. xviii. 13. There was a man named Zaccheus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus, who he was; and he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zaccheus, make haste, and come down, for to-day I must abide at thy house, and when "they" ("the Jews") saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. Lu. xix. 2, 3, 4. 7.

47 Salute your brethren only.] When ye come into an house, salute it. Mat. x. 12. If ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? Lu. vi. 32. Carry neither purse nor scrip (said Jesus to his disciples), and salute no man by the way; and into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. Lu. x. 4, 5.

What do ye more than others.] See verse 20. What glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently. 1 Pe. ii. 20.

48 Ye therefore perfect.] I am the Almighty God (suid God to Abraham), walk before me, and be thou perfect. Ge. xvii. 1. I am the Lord your God; ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy, for I am holy. Le. xi. 44. Speak unto all the congregation (said the Lord to Moses) of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. Le. xix. 2. And ye shall be holy unto me, for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine. Le. xx. 26. Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God. De. xviii. 13. There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job, and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. Job i. 1. Hast thou considered my servant Job (said God to Satan), that there is none like him in the earth; a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil; and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. Job ii. 3. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright; for the end of that man is peace. Ps. xxxvii. 37. Be ye

TAKE heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of 1

merciful, as your Father also is merciful; judge not, and ye shall not be judged; condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned; forgive, and ye shall be forgiven; give, and it shall be given unto you. The disciple is not above his master; but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. Lu. vi. 36-40. Dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Co. vii. 1. We are glad when we are weak and ye are strong, and this also we wish, even your perfection. Finally, brethren, farewell; be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind; live in peace, and the God of love and peace shall be with you. 2 Co. xiii. 9. 11. I count all things but loss (said Paul) for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord; Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect. But I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended; but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us, therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded. Phi. iii. 12-15. "Whom" ("Christ") we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. Col. i. 28. Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. Col. iv. 12. Let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. Ja. i. 4. As he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation: because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy. 1 Pe. i. 15, 16.

Even as your Father.] See verses 16. 45. Be ye followers of God, as dear children (said Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for the Gentiles), and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour. Eph. v. 1, 2. Every man that hath this hope in "him" (in "Christ"), purifieth himself even as he pure. 1 John iii. 3.

CHAP. VI.-1 Alms.] In any case thou shalt deliver "him" ("thy brother" to whom thou dost lend any thing) the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee; and it

shall be righteousness unto thee before the Lord thy God. De. xxiv. 13. He (the good man) hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour. Ps. cxii. 9. O king (said Daniel to Nebuchadnezzar), let my counsel be acceptable unto thee and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor. Da. iv. 27. As it is written (said Paul), he hath dispersed abroad, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness remaineth for ever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower, both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness. 2 Co. ix. 9, 10.

Heed.] Jesus said unto them (his disciples), Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Saducees. Mat. xvi. 6. Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. Mar. viii. 15. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. Lu. xi. 35. Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Take heed (said Jesus) and beware of covetousness, for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Lu. xii. 1. 15. Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. He. ii. 1.

To be seen of them.] See verses 5. 16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Ma. v. 16. All their works "they" ("the Scribes and Pharisees") do for to be seen of men. Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers; ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity; ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous; and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Ma. xxiii. 5. 14. 28-30. Come with me (said Jehu), and see my zeal for the Lord. But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart, for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin. 2 Ki. x. 16. 31. They come unto thee (said the Lord to Exekiel) as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them, for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Ex. xxxiii. 31. Speak unto all the people of the land and to

them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in 2 heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a

the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? Zec. vii. 5. The prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision when he hath prophesied, neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive. Zec. xiii. 4. Ye are they (said Jesus to the Pharisees) which justify yourselves before men, but God knoweth your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. Lu. xvi. 15. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only. John v. 44. "They" (" the Pharisees") loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. John xii. 43. As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. Ga. vi. 12.

Otherwise ye have no reward.] See verses 4. 6. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same? Mat. v. 46. He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward: and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man, shall receive a righteous man's reward; and whosoever shall give to drink, unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. Mat. x. 41, 42. The Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father, with his angels, and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Mat. xvi. 27. "Then" ("in the last judgment") the King shall answer and say unto them" ("the righteous"), Verily, I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done "it" ("an act of mercy") unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Then shall he say unto them on the left hand, Depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink. Mat. xxv. 40-42. If I do "this thing" ("preach the Gospel") willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, a dispensation of the Gospel is committed unto me; what is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the Gospel, I may make the Gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the Gospel. 1 Co. ix. 17, 18. For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. He. vi. 10. Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of

Egypt; for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. He. xi. 24. 26. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. 2 John 8.

Your Father which is in heaven.] See verse 9. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Mat.

v. 48.

2 When thou doest thine alms.] If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof; if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering, if his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep: then let my arm fall from my shoulder blade, &c. Job xxxi. 1620. The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again, but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth. Ps. xxxvii. 21. He (the good man) hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever. Ps. cxii. 9. He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord, and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Pr. xix. 17. Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth. Ec. xi. 2. Is not this the fast that I have chosen; to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? When thou seest the naked that thou cover him, and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? If thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul. Then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon-day. And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones; and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters fail not. And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places, thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations, and thou shalt be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of paths to dwell in. Is. lviii. 7. 10, 11, 12. Give alms of such things as ye have, and behold all things are clean unto you. Lu. xi. 41. Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. Lu. xii. 33. Some of them" ("the disciples") thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him (when he said, That thou doest, do quickly), Buy those things that we have need of against the feast, or that he should give something to the poor. John xiii. 29. This woman (Dorcas or Tabitha of Joppa) was full of good works, and
