OXFORD: AT THE CLARENDON PRESS 1895 INTRODUCTION THIS book is intended for the lower Forms of Public Schools, for Preparatory Schools, and for other elementary instruction in Scripture History. It is an attempt to supply a want which has been expressed to me, and which I believe to be felt by many, who wish their pupils to be familiarized with the language of the Bible, and at the same time recognize the importance of some general knowledge of Old Testament History. I have endeavoured, by clearness of arrangement and simplicity of language, to make the book intelligible to young learners; and, by leaving the use or omission. of parts of the notes, and the manner of using them, to the discretion of Teachers, (as explained in the 'Plan of the Work' which follows), to adapt it to classes differing somewhat in age and attainment.
