PREFACE TO VOLUME 1

THE Publication of the Prospectus of this Work, in 1810, appears to have excited an expectation of its earlier appearance, than was in the Author's contemplation. At that time, it was not his design to proceed immediately, but to collect the sentiments of his friends on the subject; and to receive such materials as might be in the possession of individuals, either not printed, or but little known.

Besides the apprehension of the want there is of such a Biographical Publication, he was also induced to undertake it, from the knowledge that a Friend, who is supposed to possess a larger Collection of Books, written by Members of our Society, than any other individual, intended leaving them to the Quarterly Meeting of York; by which means, mate-rials for such a Work would be easily within the Author's reach. But though this Friend has since kindly presented the books during his life, he has not yet had opportunity to arrange and forward them. Till this is done, it is appre hended, but little progress can be made with the work. It is, however, intended to make use of such materials as can be obtained; and to proceed as quickly as the Author's other engagements will permit; which indeed afford him but little leisure for this kind of employment.
