Egypt with great power and with a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and unto him shall ye bow yourselves, and to him shall ye sacrifice: 37. and the statutes and the ordinances, and the law and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore: and ye shall not fear other gods: 38. and the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods: 39. but the Lord your God shall ye fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies. 40. Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner. 41. So these nations feared the Lord, and served their graven images; their children likewise, and their children's children, as did their fathers, so do they unto this day. Sickness In those days † Hezekiah was sick even unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him and said, Set thine house in order for thou shalt die, and not live. Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the Lord, and said, Remember now, O Lord, I beseech thee, How I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which was good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle part of the city, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying, Turn again, and say to Hezekiah the prince of my people, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord. And I will add unto thy days fifteen years: and I will deliver thee, and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria: and I will defend this city, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake. Now Isaiah had said, Let them take a cake of figs, and lay it for a plaster upon the boil, and he shall recover. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered. Hezekiah also had said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the Lord will heal me, and that I shall go up unto Return of the the house of the Lord the third day? And Isaiah said, This shall be the sign unto thee from the Lord, that the Lord will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or go back ten steps? And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to decline ten steps: nay, but let the shadow return ten steps. And he spake unto him and gave him a sign, behold, I will cause the shadow on the steps, which is gone down on the dial of Ahaz with the sun, to return backward ten steps. And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the Lord: and he brought the shadow ten steps backward, by which it had gone down on the dial of Ahaz. * See Chronology Appendix A. Both systems of chronology are used, e. g., Hezekiah "In those days" refers to the period when "he rebelled against the king of Assyria and served him not," and so was pleased with the embassy from Babylon, which suggested a possible alliance against a common enemy.
