C. M. Crowle 3. Wantage 204.
Pleading with God under Affliction.
WHY should a living man complain
Of deep distress within,

Since every sigh, and every pain
Is but the fruit of sin?

2 No, LORD! I'll patiently submit,
Nor ever dare rebel;

Yet sure I may, here at thy feet,
My painful feelings tell.

3 Thou seest what floods of sorrow rise,

And beat upon my

soul;

One trouble to another ories,

Billows on billows roll.

4 From fear to hope, and hope to fear,
My shipwreck'd soul is tost; late
Till I am tempted in despair.

To give up all for lost.

5 Yet thro' the stormy clouds I'll look

Once more to thee, my God!

O fix my feet upon a rock,"
Beyond the gaping flood.

6 One look of mercy from thy face
Will set my heart at ease;
One all-commanding word of grace
Will make the tempest cease.

313 (1st P.) L. M. Kingsbridge 88. Angel's Hymn 60.

The Backslider, Jer. xxxi. 18-20.

1 RETURN, O wanderer, return,

And seek an injur'd Father's face;
Those warm desires that in thee burn,
Were kindled by reclaiming grace.
2 Return, O wanderer, return, ~
And seek a Father's melting heart,
Whose pitying eyes thy grief discern,
Whose hand can heal thine inward smart.

3 Return, O wanderer, return,

He heard thy deep repentant sigh;
He saw thy soften'd spirit mourn,
When no intruding ear was nigh.
4 Return, O wanderer, return,
Thy Saviour bids thy spirit live ;-
Go to his bleeding feet and learn
How freely Jesus can forgive.

5 Return, O wanderer, return,
And wipe away the falling tear;

"Tis God who says "no longer mourn," "Tis mercy's voice invites thee near. '! 6 Return, O wanderer, return, az Regain thy lost, lamented rest; Jehovah's melting bowels yearn, To clasp his Ephraim to his breast.

Would fain, like Peter, weep;
Let me be by grace restor'd,
On me be all its freeness shown;
Turn and look upon me, LORD!
And break my heart of stone.

2 Saviour Prince! enthron'd above,
Repentance to impart,
Give me, thro' thy dying love,
The humble contrite heart;
Give, what I have long implor'd,
A portion of thy love unknown:
Turn and look upon me, LORD!
And break my heart of stone.
3 See me, Saviour! from above,
Nor suffer me to die;

The sin that doth my spirit grieve,
'Tis Jesus only can relieve.!

My kind unchanging friend,
And, Lord, I'd rather die
Than thy great name offend;
O break corruption's iron neck,...
And save me for thy mercy's sake.
Did I a world possess,

That world I'd now resign,
To feel thy pardoning grace
And victory over sin;-

To find my God within my heart,
And feel my every sin depart.

Yet I will not despair,
