FEBRUARY 20.

The Lord my banner.

Morning.

EXODUS xvii. 8-16.

When Moses stood with arms spread wide, Success was found on Israel's side;

But when, through weariness, they failed, That moment Amalek prevailed.

Men ought ALWAYS to PRAY, and not to faint.-LUKE Xviii. I.

Evening.

PSALM XX.; note verses 5, 7, with
PSALM IX. 4, GALATIANS vi. 14.

Faint not, Christian! though in rage
Satan would thy soul engage;

Gird on faith's anointed shield,

Bear it to the battle field.

Faint not, Christian! though the world
Has its hostile flag unfurled;

Hold the cross of Jesus fast,

Thou shalt overcome at last!

Thanks be to God which always causeth us to TRIUMPH IN CHRIST.-2 COR. ii. 14.

FEBRUARY 21.

God my exceeding joy.
Morning.

EXODUS Xviii. 1-12.

How happy the man
Whose heart is set free;
The people that can
Be joyful in Thee!
Their joy is to walk

In the light of Thy face;
Their pleasure to talk

Of Christ and His grace.

There be many that say, Who will show us any good? Lord, lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us.-PSALM iv. 6.

Evening.

ROMANS V. I-II.

A bleeding Saviour seen by faith,
A sense of pardoning love,
A hope that triumphs over death,
Give joys like those above.
To take a glimpse within the veil,
To know that Christ is mine,
Are springs of joy that cannot fail,
Unspeakable! divine!

Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say Rejoice. PHIL. iv. 4.

FEBRUARY 22.

Mount Sinai-Mount Zion.
Morning.

EXODUS xix., xx. 18-21.

Compare Ex. xix. 16, "a thick cloud," with
MATT. xvii. 5, "a bright cloud.”

I thought upon the law, the fiery law,
Holy and just, and good in its decree;
I looked to Jesus, and in Him I saw

That law fulfilled-its curse endured for

me.

I thought I saw an angry, frowning God Sitting as Judge upon the great white throne;

My soul was overwhelmed, then Jesus showed His gracious face, and all my dread was gone.

-GAL. iii. 13, IS. xlii. 21, ACTS xiii. 38, 39.

Evening.

HEBREWS xii. 14-29.

Let us love, and sing, and wonder,
Let us praise the Saviour's name;
He has hushed the law's loud thunder,
He has quenched Mount Sinai's flame,
He has washed us in His blood,
He has brought us nigh to God.

-EPH. ii. 18; Is. xliv. 22.

FEBRUARY 23.

Lo, I come to do Thy will, O God.
Porning.

EXODUS xxi. 1-6; PSALM xl. 6-8.
ISAIAH 1.5; JOHN iv. 34, vi. 38.
He took upon Him the form of a servant,
and became obedient unto death,
even the death of the cross.-PHIL. ii. 7, 8.
For us, poor, wretched, sinful men,
Thou laid'st Thy glory by ;
First, in our mortal flesh to serve,
Then, in that flesh to die.

Bought with Thy service and Thy blood,
We doubly, Lord, are Thine;
To Thee our days we would devote,
To Thee our death resign.

Evening.

HEBREWS X. 1-17.

Not all the blood of beasts,
On Jewish altars slain,

Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or take away its stain.

But Christ, the Heavenly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;

A sacrifice of nobler name,
And richer blood than they.

FEBRUARY 24.

Emmanuel

Morning.

God with us.

EXODUS XXV. I-9.

Within the Tabernacle door,

My soul, what dost thou see? 'Tis Jesus, JESUS, everywhere, That shows Himself to me.

The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. I beseech Thee, SHOW ME THY GLORY !—JOHN i. 14; Ex. xxxiii. 18; LUKE xxiv. 29.

Evening.
I JOHN iv.

[ocr errors]

Wandering far o'er earth's dark mountains,
Sinking fast in death's dark wave,
Jesus, from the heights of glory,

Saw us, loved us, stooped to save.

Saw us in our depth of ruin,

Loved us in our guilt and shame, Saved us by His life-blood shedding, Satisfying God's just claim.

Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise TOOK PART OF THE SAME, that through death, He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil.— HEB. ii. 14.
