When all the notes that angels sing
Are far inferior to thy name?

2 Worthy is he that once was slain,
The Prince of Peace that groan'd and died,
Worthy to rise, and live, and reign
At his Almighty Father's side.

3 Power and dominion are his due,
Who stood condemn'd at Pilate's bar:
Wisdom belongs to Jesus too,

Though he was charg'd with maduess here.

4 All riches are his native right,
Yet he sustain'd amazing loss:
To nim ascribe eternal might,
Who left his weakness on the cross.

5 Honour immortal must be paid,
Instead of scandal and of scorn:
While glory shines around his head,
And a bright crown without a thorn.

6 Blessings for ever on the Lamb,
Who bore the curse for wretched men:
Let angels sound his sacred name,
And every creature say, Amen.

Christ's Ascension, Psalm xxiv. 7. UR Lord is risen from the dead; Our Jesus is gone up on high; The powers of hell are captive led→ Dragg'd to the portals of the sky. 2 There his triumphal chariot waits, And angels chant the solemn lay; "Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates! Ye everlasting doors, give way!”

3 Loose all your bars of massy light,

And wide unfold the radiant scene;
He claims those mansions as his right:-
Receive the King of Glory in.

"Who is the King of Glory, who?" The Lord that all his foes o'ercame;

The world, sin, death, and hell, o'erthrew; And Jesus is the Conqueror's name.

Christ's Intercession.

1 WELL, the Redeemer's gone T' appear before our God,

To sprinkle o'er the flaming throne
With his atoning blood.

No fiery vengeance now,

Nor burning wrath comes down; If justice call for sinner's blood, The Saviour shows his own.

Before his father's eye

Our humble suit he moves,

The Father lays his thunder by,
And looks, and smiles, and loves.

Now may our joyful tongues
Our Maker's honour sing,

Jesus the priest receives our songs,
And bears them to the King.

[We bow before his face,
And sound his glories high,
"Hosanna to the God of grace
That lays his thunder by.]

"On earth thy mercy reigns,
And triumphs all above;'

But, Lord, how weak are mortal strains
To speak immortal love!

[blocks in formation]

ARISE, my soul, arise,

Shake off thy guilty fears,

The bleeding Sacrifice
In my behalf appears;

Before the throne my Surety stands,
My name is written on his hands.

He ever lives above,

For me to intercede;
His all-redeeming love,

His precious blood to plead;
His blood aton'd for all our race,
And sprinkles now the throne of grace.

3 'Five bleeding wounds he bears,
Receiv'd on Calvary;

4

They pour effectual prayers, They strongly speak for me; Forgive him, O forgive, they cry, Nor let that ransom'd sinner die.

The Father hears him pray

His dear anointed One:

He cannot turn away

The Presence of his Son;

His Spirit answers to the blood,
And tells me I am born of God.

My God as reconcil'd,

His pard'ning voice I hear:
He owns me for his child,
I can no longer fear;

With confidence I now draw nigh,
And Father, Abba Father! cry.

I know that my Redeemer liveth. Job xix. 25.

1 I KNOW that my Redeemer lives;

What comfort this sweet sentence gives!
He lives, he lives, who once was dead,
He lives, my ever living head.

2 He lives to bless me with his love,
He lives to plead for me above,
He lives my hungry soul to feed,
He lives to help in time of need.

He lives to grant me rich supply,
He lives to guide me with his eye
He lives to comfort me when faint,
He lives to hear my soul's complaint.

He lives to silence all my fears,
He lives to stop and wipe my tears,
He lives to calm my troubled heart,
He lives, all blessings to impart.

5 He lives, all glory to his name!
He lives, my Jesus, still the same;
O the sweet joy this sentence gives,
I know that my Redeemer lives!

NOW let us raise our cheerful strains,
And join the blissful choir above;

There our exalted Saviour reigns,

And there they sing his wondrous love:

2 Jesus, who once upon the tree
In agonizing pains expir'd,
To save us rebels,-yes, 'tis he!

How bright, how lovely, how admir'd!

3 Jesus, who died that we might live,
Died in the wretched traitor's place,
O what returns can mortals give
For such immeasurable grace!

4 Were universal nature ours,

And art with all her boasted store; Nature and art, with all their pow'rs, Would still confess the off'rer poor.

5 Yet tho' for bounty so divine

We ne'er can equal honours raise:
Jesus! may all our hearts be thine,
And all our tongues proclaim thy praise.

160. Christ adored by the heavenly host.
the delights, the heav'nly joys,
The glories of the place,
Where Jesus sheds the brightest beams
Of his o'erflowing grace!

2 Princes to his imperial name
Bend their bright sceptres down;
Dominions, thrones, and pow'rs rejoice,
To see him wear the crown.

3 Archangels sound his lofty praise,
Thro' ev'ry heav'nly street;

And lay their highest honours down,
Submissive at his feet.

4 While angels shout and praise their King,
Let mortals learn their strains:
Let all the earth his honours sing;
O'er all the earth he reigns.

5 Now to the Lamb, that once was slain,
Be endless blessings paid;

Salvation, glory, joy, remain

For ever on thy head!

6 Thou hast redeem'd our souls with blood, Hast set the pris'ners free,

Hast made us kings and priests to God,
And we shall reign with thee.

STAR OF BETHLEHEM.

L. M.

The Star of Bethlehem.

HEN marshall'd on the nightly plain,
The glittering hosts bestud the sky;

One star alone, of all the train,

Can fix the sinner's wandering eye.
