man is ever blest,

Who shuns the sinners' ways; Amongst their councils never stands,

Nor takes the scorner's place. 2 But makes the law of God

His study and delight, Amidst the labours of the clay,

And watches of the night. 3 He like a tree shall thrive,

With waters near the root;
Fresh as the leaf, his name shall live,

His works are heav'nly fruit. 4 Not so th' ungodly race,

They no such blessings find;
Their hopes shall flee like empty chaff

Before the driving wind.
5 How will they bear to stand

Before that judgment-seat,
Where all the saints at Christ's right hand

In full assembly meet?
He knows and he approves

The way the righteous go:
But sinners and their works shall meet
A dreadful overthrow.
2. AWAKENING. THE EVIL OF SIN,

Svil of sin.
GOD, from his throne, with piercing eye,

Naked does every heart behold;
But never, till we come to die,
Will he to us the view unfold.
Should sin, in naked form appear,
Just as it rises in the heart,

In ev'ry feeling, every thought;
3 The fire of hell must kindle soon,

How envy and revenge would flame!
One heart would

urge another on,
Till rage and vengeance want a name!
& Sin in its nature would appear

A living death, to form a hell;
The worst of mis’ries creatures fear,

T'he worst of plagues the tongue can tel 5 Unveil'd! and naked ev'ry heart

Before the judgment seat must stand,
Sin act no more a double part,

But meet a death from its own hand. 5 The fiery lake must hotter grow

From the fierce clash of sinful souls;
Each bosom like a furnace glow,
Nor God the rage or fire control.

ND now the scales have left mine eyes,

Now I begin to see:
the curs'd deeds my sins have done!

What murderous things they be!
2 Were these the traitors, dearest Lord,

That thy fair body tore?
Monsters, that stain'd those heavenly limbs

With floods of purple gore!
3 Was it for crimes that I had done

My dearest Lord was slain,
When justice seiz'd God's only Son,

And put his soul to pain?
4 Forgive my guilt, O Prince of peace,

I'll wound my God no more;.
Hence from my heart, ye sins, be gone,
For Jesus I adore.

5 Furnish me, Lord, with heavenly arms

From grace's magazine, And I'll proclaim eternal war With every darling sin.

C. M. 215.We must be born again. Joha iii. 7. SINNERS, this solemn truth regard! Hear, all

ye sons of men; For Christ, the Saviour, hath declar'd,

“ Ye must be born again."
2 Whate'er might be your birth or blood,

The sinner's boast is vain;
Thus saith the glorious Son of God,

“ Ye must be born again.”
3 Our nature's totally depravid

The heart a sink of sin;
Without a change we can't be sav'd;

“ Ye must be born again.”
[4 That which is born of flesh is flesh,

And flesh it will remain; 'Then marvel not that Jesus saith,

“ Ye must be born again.”]
5 Spirit of life, thy grace impart,

And breathe on sinners slain;
Bear witness, Lord, in ev'ry heart,

That we are born again.
6 Dear Saviour, let us now begin

To trust and love thy word;
And, by forsaking ev'ry sin,

Prove we are born of God.

TRE SINNER'S HELPLESSNESS.

A thousand thoughts revolve,

Come, with your guilt and fear opprest,

And make this last resolve:
2 “I'll go to Jesus, though my sin

Hath like a mountain rose;
I know his courts, I'll enter in,

Whatever may oppose:
3 “ Prostrate I'll lie before his throne,

And there my guilt confess;
I'll tell him I'm a wretch undone,

Without his sovereign grace:
4 “Perhaps he will admit my plea,

Perhaps will hear my prayer;
But if I perish I will pray,

And perish only there. 6 “I can but perish if I go,

I am resolv'd to try;
For if I stay away, I know

I must for ever die.”
6 But if I die with mercy sought,

When I the King have tried,
This were to die (delightful thought!)

As sinner never died.

VANITY AND UNCERTAINTY OF LIFE.

The time t’ensure the great reward; And while the lamp holds out to burn,

The vilest sinner may return.
2 Life is the hour that God has given

Secure the blessings of the day.
3 The living know that they must die,
But all the dead forgotten lie,

They have no share in all that's done

Beneath the circuit of the sun.
4 Then what my thoughts design to do,

My hands with all your might pursue,
Since no device, nor work is found,

Nor faith, nor hope beneath the ground 5 There are no acts of pardon past

In the cold grave to which we haste,
But darkness, death, and long despair,
