Against the Son of God's delight, And friends betray'd him to his foes, 2 Before the mournful scene began, He took the bread, and bless'd, and brake; What love through all his actions ran! What wondrous words of grace he spake! § “This is my body broke for sin; Receive and eat the living food.” took the cup and bless'd the wine: “ 'Tis the new cov'nant in my blood.” “Do this (he cried) till time shall end, In mem'ry of your dying friend: C. His glorious name to raise; And ev'ry voice be praise! 517. (392.) L. M. ESUS is gone above the skies, Where our weak senses reach nim not; And carnal objects couit our eyes, To thrust our Saviour from our though.t. 2 He knows, what wand'ring hearts we have, Apt to forget his lovely face; These kind memorials of his grace. 3 The Lord of life his table spread With his own flesh and dying blood, 4. Let sinful sweets be all forgot, And earth grow less in our esteem; Christ and his lore fill ev'ry thought, And faith and liope be fix'd on him. 5 While he is absent from our sight, 'T'is to prepare our souls a place; That we may dwell in heav'nly light, And live for ever near his face. 518. S. M. The bleeding Saviour's name, And eat the Paschal Lamb: Our passover was slain, At Salem's hallowed place, Yet we who in our tents remain, Shall gain his largest grace. 2 This eucharistic feast, Our every want supplies, And share his sacrifice; 'Who here his passion show, And God out of his lioly seat . Shall all his gifts bestow; 3 Who thus our faith employ His suffprings to record, E'en now we mournfully enjoy Communiun with our Lord; As though we every one Beneath his cross had stood, And seen him heave, and heard him groan, And felt his gushing blood. The mortal pang is past! We too with him are dead, And shall with him arise, Shall lift us to the skies. 519. C. M, 1 O THOU, who this myster.vus bread Didst in Emmaus break, Return herewith our souls to feed, And to thy foll’wers speak. 2 Unseal the volume of thy grace, Apply the gospel word; Open our eyes to see thy face, Our hearts, to know thee, Lord. Till thou the veil remove: With flames of perfect love. And make thy mercy known, And give our pardon'd souls to feel That God and love are one. 520. (388.) L. M. The Eucharist commemorative. 1 "EAT, drink, in mem’ry of your frien..!" Such was our Master's last request; Who all the pangs of death endur'd, That we might live for ever blest. ? Yes, we'll record thy matchless grace, Thou dearest, tend'rest, best of friends! Thy dying love the noblest praise Of long eternity transcends. 3 'Tis pleasure more than earth can give, Thy goodness through these veils to see, Thy table food celestial yields; And happy they, who sit with thee, 4 But oh ! what vast transporting joys. Shall fill our breasts, our tongues inspire, When, join'd with the celestial train, Our grateful souls thy love admire! 1 (389.) L. M. 521. The Eucharist commanded by Jesus. THIS feast was Jesus' high behest, This cup of thanks his last request. Ye, who can feel his worth, attend: Eat, drink, in mem’ry of your friend. 2 Around the patriot's bust ye throng; Him ye exalt in swelling song;. Who freed from vassalage his kind. 3 And shall not he your praises reap, Who rescues from the iron sleep? Unbinds the captives e'en of death? 4 Shall he, who, sinful men to save, Became a tenant of the grave, Pass unremember'd to the skies? To hymn the Saviour's welcome name: Repeat his praise in worlds above. 522. Communicants must love Christ and one (391.) C.
