For thou didst bless the infant train,
And we are less then they.

4 Oh, let thy grace perform its part,
And let contention cease;
And shed abroad in ev'ry heart
Thine everlasting peace.

[blocks in formation]

Evening:

INDULGENT Father, by whose care
I've pass'd another day,

Let me this night thy mercy share,
And teach me how to pray.

2 Show me my sins, and how to mourn
My guilt before thy face;
Direct me, Lord, to Christ alone,
And save me by thy grace.

3 Let each returning night declare
The tokens of thy love;

And ev'ry hour thy grace prepare
My soul for joys above.

4 And when on earth I close my eyes,
To sleep in death's embrace,

Let me to heav'n and glory rise,
T' enjoy thy smiling face.

[blocks in formation]

1 THE day is past and gone,

The evening shades appear,

Oh, may I ever keep in mind,
The night of death draws near.

2 I lay my garments by,

Upon my bed to rest;

So death will soon remove me hence,
And leave my soul undrest.

3 Lord, keep me safe this night,
Secure from all my fears;

May angels guard me while I sleep,
Till morning light appears.

4 And when I early rise,

To view th' unwearied sun,
May I set out to win the prize,
And after glory run:

5 That when my days are past,
And I from time remove,
Lord, I may in thy bosom rest,
The bosom of thy love.

[blocks in formation]

1 WHAT if death my sleep invade!

Should I be of death afraid?

Whilst encircled by thine arm,
Death may strike, but cannot harm,

2 What if beams of opening day
Shine around my breathless clay?
Brighter visions from on high
Shall regale my mental eye.

s Tender friends awhile may mourn
Me from their embraces torn;
Dearer, better friends I have
In the realms beyond the grave,
See the guardian-angels nigh
Wait to waft my soul on high!
See the golden gates display'd!
See the crown to grace my head!

5 See a flood of sacred light,
Which no more shall yield to night!
Transitory world, farewell!

Jesus calls with him to dwell!

6 With thy heavenly presence blest,
Death is life, and labour rest
Welcome sleep, or death to me,
Still secure, for still with thee.

Evening Hymn.

NOW, from the altar of our hearts

Let incense flames arise;

Assist us, Lord, to offer up
Our evening sacrifice.

2 Awake, our love, awake, our joy;
Awake, our heart and tongue:
Sleep not when mercies loudly cal.
Break forth into a song.

8 Minutes and mercies multiply'd
Have made up all this day;
Minutes came quick, but mercies were
More fleet and free than they.

4 New time, new favours, and new joys, Do a new song require;

Till we shall praise thee as we would, Accept our heart's desire.

5 Lord of our time, whose hand hath set New time upon our score;

Thee may we praise for all our time,
When time shall be no more!

Lord's Day Evening.

1 WHEN, O dear Jesus when shall I

Behold thee all serene;

Blest in perpetual sabbath-day,
Without a veil between!

2 Assist me, while I wander here,
Amidst a world of cares;

Incline my heart to pray with love,
And then accept my prayers.

3 Release my soul from every chain,
No more hell's captive led;
And pardon a repenting child,
For whom the Saviour bled.

4 Spare me, my God, O spare the soul
That gives itself to thee;
Take all that I possess below,
And give thyself to me.

5 Thy Spirit, O my Father, give,
To be my guide and friend,
To light my path to ceaseless joys,
To sabbaths without end.

Lord's Day Evening.

LORD, how delightful 'tis to see

A whole assembly worship thee;
At once they sing, at once they pray!
They hear of heaven, and learn the way.

I have been there, and still would go;
"Tis like a little heaven below:
Not all that hell or sin can say,
Shall tempt me to forget this day.
3 O write upon my mem'ry, Lord,
The text and doctrine of thy word;
That I may break thy laws no more,
But love thee better than before.

4 With thoughts of Christ and things divine, Fill up this foolish heart of mine;

That hoping pardon through his blood,
I may lie down and wake with God.

An Evening Song.

DREAD Sov'reign, let my evening song
Like holy incense rise!

Assist the offerings of my tongue

To reach the lofty skies.

2 Through all the dangers of the day,
Thy hand was still my guard,

And still to drive my wants away
Thy mercy stood prepar'd.

3 Perpetual blessings from above
Encompass me around,

But oh! how few returns of love
Hath my Creator found.

4 What have I done for him that died
To save my wretched soul!
How are my follies multiplied,
Fast as my minutes roll!

5 Lord, with this guilty heart of mine
To thy dear cross I flee,

And to thy grace my soul resign
To be renew'd by thee.

6 Sprinkled afresh with pardoning blood
I lay me down to rest,
As in the embraces of my God,
Or on my Saviour's breast,

641. Midnight Thoughts recollected.
TWAS in the watches of the night
1 thought upon thy pow'r,

kept thy lovely face in sight
Amidst the darkest hour.

? My flesh lay resting on my bed,
My soul arose on high:

[ocr errors]

My God, my life, my hope,' I said,
Bring thy salvation nigh.'

8 My spirit labours up thine Lill,
And climbs the heavenly road;
But thy right hand upholds me still,
While I pursue my God.

Thy mercy stretches o'er my head
The shadow of thy wings:
My heart rejoices in thine aid,
My tongue awakes and sings.

LORD! thou wilt hear me when I pray

I am for ever thine:
