and fupporting it in thefe Frames, is to give us an Idea of a Species of created Effence, to Parts of which that uncreated Effence, of which the created Names give us an Idea, has, independent of them, communicated Lives. And the Mechanism in this Fluid, and thofe Frames, is to give us Ideas of the Manner of communicating this Sort of Life, and of fupporting it, because we can have no higher Object for Ideas.

But as Ideas of the Effence and of the Perfons, because invifible, and of their Actions, Strength, and Power, are taken from this Fluid and the three Parts in it; and as one of the Names or the undivided third Part in this created Fluid is called Spirit, and is the Breath, and with the Light, another undivided third Part is the Life of the living Creature; and as the Manner of infufing Life into that Frame by this Machine, is infufing a Part or Parts of itself, or of that Part or Parts of itself which in that Action is called Light, and Spirit; and as the Word Spirit is employed to give us an Idea of the Spirit, the third Perfon in the uncreated Effence; and as it is alfo employed, joined with Jehovah or Aleim, to give us an Idea of Power, fo is made the Emblem

blem of Power, and faid to be communicated to Man or Men to give an Idea, not of communicating the whole or any Part of the Effence of that Perfon, but of the delegated Power of exercising the Attribute of Prescience, or fome other of the Attributes of that Effence or Perfon; and as Light is used to give us an Idea of the second Perfon; the Word Spirit or the Word Light could not be used here; and the Idea taken from either or both of them, which give Life to the Body, would not have made the Distinction which is next to infinite.

So as God created another Species, and gives it Lives; the Name of that which is to give us an Idea of that which conftitutes a created Mind, that is, the Effence of the Soul or Mind, which is but a fmall Part of that created Effence, because invisible, is a Name of a small Part of that created Fluid, Part of the Substance of that Machine which gives Life to our Body. A Name of a small Part of the Mixture, a Halitus in that Condition or Action of the Fluid upon the Body of Man, which we from its Effects call Heat, is borrowed to give us an Idea of that fmall Part of an Effence or Subftance, out of which that is taken which we call a Soul or Mind;

and

Idea of the Manner of its taking Lives; and of their being fupported, is taken from the continual Circulation, and fo Irradiation of the Air and its Preffure, whereby our Frames are fupplied with fresh Halitus for what we call Heat, &c. and carried to that otherwife inconceivable Effluence of the Effence which communicates and fupports Life in the Effen of created Spirits.

But the Infufer, the Action of Infusing, the Thing infufed, and the Manner of its having Lives, cannot be taken in one fingle or complex Idea, because there is nothing that our Senfes can reach, which can give fuch an Idea; nor can we have two of them in one. If it were taken in one Idea from the Air, which infufes Part of its felf into the Body of a Man, the Halitus can give, and the Spirit fupport Life in a framed Effence; that is the furtheft it can

go. It cannot infufe an Effence into another with Lives; for Air or a Halitus infused into the Body, is not an Effence nor Part of the Body, but is, with the Spirit, the Supporter of Life in the Body; and the Idea of the Matter infused, if it were taken strictly from the Halitus, would carry the thing too far; for the Halitus infufed into the Body is Part of the Air its felf, what the Jehovah

Jehovah Aleim infufed, was but a Figure, an Image of themselves. And here in Distinction to that Life given by the Machine, as well as of the Effence infufed, the Names of those are used who are expreffed to have Lives in themselves in their Effence, and who can create Effences, and give Lives, they performed that Part; and who, as will appear by thofe Names, are engaged for the Welfare of thofe Beings; and as the Cafe now stands, ftill to procure fuch of them as do their Parts, Lives.

But above all, the Effence of the Soul is diftinguished by the Plurality or Duality of Lives; for none will affert, that the Air can give more Lives than one to one Man. Whatever Power the infused Sou! had in or over Adam, he was not changed, but ftill was a fenfitive mortal Animal, and no more. The fecond Life Man must have, whether it had been by the Sacrament, the Tree of Lives, or whatever other manner, must be from a higher Fountain; and as an immortal Soul muft have more than one, and I think can have no more than two, one before Separation, and another after: But if we fhould allow one during Separation, and fo make three, it will not alter the Cafe; whether

they

they be accounted, with reference to the two States or the two Lives, with the Body, or, in the Scripture Manner of speaking, a Life of Duration, and a Life of Happiness, because the one without the other is Death; 'tis all the fame: And we need not depend upon a fingle Word, for in many other Places where the future State is included, the Word is plural.

I fhall cite a few Texts where B. C. "The human rational and immortal Soul" is mentioned, and where it and the Inftrument of fenfitive Life are mentioned. Pfal. cl. 6. Let every Soul praise Jehovah, Prov. xx. 27. The Soul of Man is a Light of Jehovah, fearching all the inward Parts of the Belly. Gen. vii. 21. Every Man in whofe Noftrils was the Soul, the Breath of Lives. Job xxvii. 3. My Soul is in me, and the Breath of God in my Nofrils. xxxii. 8. Surely there is a Spirit (Breath) in Man; and that which the Almighty breathed in which gives them Underftanding.- xxxiv. 14. He will take away bis Breath and his Soul: every flesh fhall perifh together and Man turn again to Duft. Ifa. xlii. 5. Thus fays God Jehovah that Spread forth the Earth- that gives the Soul to the People upon it; and Breath to
