humbly befeech Thee to enlighten my Mind with the true Knowledge and Understanding of that folemn Vow which I made in my Baptifm, and which I am now about to ratify and confirm publickly in thy Presence; that I may conftantly renounce the Devil, by avoiding all those Temptations by which he feeks to destroy me, and by abstaining from all those Sins which partake most of his diabolical Nature; that I may refift all covetous Defires of Honour, Riches, and Pleasure, and all thofe evil Cuftoms and Maxims of the World, which alienate Men's Minds from the Love of God; that I may mortify all the inordinate Appetites of my own corrupt Nature; that I may believe all thy holy Revelations, and keep thy bleffed Will and Commandments all the Days of my Life. O! inftru&t me in all the Particulars of my Duty, that I may herein exercise myself, to keep a Confcience void of Offence, towards God, and towards Man.

Give me, O Lord, unfeigned Repentance for all the Errors of my Life paft, that my many and great Sins which I have committed, may not deprive me of the Affiftances of thy holy Spirit, which I am about to receive, but let my hearty Sorrow, through the Merits of Chrift, wash away all that is paft, and let the Power and Strength, communicated to me from Above, mortify and fubdue them tor the Time to come. I am unable, O

Lord,

Lord, of myself, to help myfelf; mercifully grant, that thy bleffed Spirit may in all Things rule and direct my Heart, that by his holy Infpiration I may think thofe Things that are good, and by his gracious Guiding may perform the fame, through Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer after Confirmation.

I BLESS and praise thy holy Name, O Lord God, for thofe renewed Affurances that Thou haft vouchfafed me, of thy Favour and gracious Goodness towards me; and though in thy infinite Wisdom Thou haft thought fit to withdraw the extraordinary Gifts of thy Holy Spirit, yet Thou art pleased to guide thy faithful Servants by his fecret and invifible Communications, when they feek them in a regular and minifterial Way. O therefore! let the Bleffing which I have received by the Hands of thy Servant the Bishop be with me, and remain with me, and moft powerfully affift and support me in all Trials and Temptations, when I moft need the Help of thy Holy Spirit.

Let Him be unto me a Spirit of Sanctification to purify my corrupt Nature; a Spirit of Counsel in all Difficulties, of Direction in all Doubts, of Courage in all Dangers, of Conftancy

Conftancy in all Perfecutions, of Comfort in all Troubles, especially in Times of Sickness, and at the Hour of Death; and of Submiffion and Refignation to thy holy Will and Pleafure in all Afflictions that are moft grievous to Flesh and Blood.

Leave me not a Moment to my own human Frailty, without his Affistance; but let him conftantly infpire me with Fear, Love, and Devotion towards thee; with Truth, Juftice and Charity, towards my Neighbour; and with Abftinence and Sobriety towards myself.

O!. make me fenfible, O Lord, of that folemn and public Profeffion of my Faith, which I have declared in the Prefence of God and the Congregation, and of those Promises of endeavouring faithfully to observe and keep thy holy Commandments, and of perfevering in the fame: Make me always true to these Engagements of living according to the Maxims of the Chriftian Religion, that walking uprightly before Thee all my Days, and being found watching when my appointed Time fhall come, I may from a Life of Righteousness be tranflated to a Life of Glory, through Jesus Christ, my only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.
