LETTER TO THE PUBLISHER,
FROM THE REV. JOEL HAWES, D. D., PASTOR OF THE FIRST CON
GREGATIONAL CHURCH IN HARTFORD.
Dear Sir: When you enquired of me, some months since, whether I had any book, of a religious character. which I could recommend for publication, I put into your hand a little volume, entitled “Manners and Customs of the Jews,” &c., which I am happy to learn you are now about to issue from the press. Though I purchased the book while in England, I was not fully acquainted with its merits, and intimated to you that if it should be thought desirable, I would revise it and make such alterations and additions as might seem necessary to render it more useful. But on a careful perusal, I find very little to alter; and though from the nature of the subject, additions might be made to almost any extent, the design of the book does not require them, and I choose therefore that it should go before the public in its original form. The author, whoever he may be, was evidently well qualified for his work. He has made a very judicious selection of materials which lie dispersed in larger works; has compressed a great amount of most useful information into a small compass, and while his style is uniformly neat and simple, he has interspersed with his facts a great variety of pious and practical reflections, adapted both to enlighten the mind and improve the heart. I know of no work of the same size which contains a greater amount of matter adapted to be useful
