3 A thousand of our years amount
Scarce to a day in thine account;
Like yesterday's departed light,
Or the last watch of ending night.
4 Death, like an overflowing stream,
Sweeps us away; our life's a dream,
An empty tale, a morning flower
Cut down and withered in an hour.

325. C. M.

1 JEHOVAH! We adore thy name, And bow before thy throne; Created nature, all proclaim

That thou art God alone.

2 The sun pours forth his radiant light
Thy glory to display ;

How weak an emblem of thy sight
Is his most piercing ray.

3 The starry hosts of heaven combine
To sing aloud thy praise;

And will for ever, while they shine,
Their songs exulting raise.

4 Through vast immensity thine eye
Can instantly survey

Ten thousand worlds that roll on high,
Which all thy word obey.

5 O! how unspeakable thy love
To mortal man below:

Still may they all thy pity prove,
From whom all blessings flow.

326. C. M.

1 LORD, thou art good! all nature shows
Its mighty author kind:

Thy bounty through creation flows,
Full, free, and unconfined.

2 The whole in every part proclaims
Thine infinite good will;

It shines in stars, and flows in streams,
And bursts from every hill.

3 We view it o'er the spreading main,
And heavens which spread more wide;
It drops in gentle showers of rain,
And rolls in every tide.

4 Long hath it been diffused abroad,
Through ages past and gone;
Nor ever can exhausted be,
But still keeps flowing on.

5 Through the whole earth it pours supplies,
Spreads joy through every part;
O may such love attract our eyes,
And captivate each heart!

6 Our highest admiration raise,
Our best affections move!

Employ our tongues in songs of praise,
And fill our hearts with love!

327. L. M.

1 THUS saith the high and lofty One,
"I sit upon my holy throne;

My name is God—I dwell on high;
Dwell in my own eternity.

2" But I descend to worlds below;
On earth I have a mansion too;
The humble spirit and contrite
Is an abode of my delight.

3 "The humble soul my words revive,
I bid the mourning sinner live;
Heal all the broken hearts I find,
And ease the sorrows of the mind."

4 Lord, may thy pardoning grace be nigh, Lest we should faint, despair, and die! Then shall our grateful voice declare, How free thy tender mercies are.

[blocks in formation]

1 THOU art, O God, a spirit pure,
Unseen by mortal eyes—
Th' immortal and eternal King,
The great, the good, the wise.

2 Whilst nature changes, and her works Corrupt, dissolve, and die,

Thine essence pure, no change shall see,
To all eternity.

3 Thou great Invisible! what hand
Can draw thine image fair?

To what in heaven, to what on earth,
Can men their God compare?

4 Our souls the purest homage pay;
And humbly him adore;

More shall this please than sacrifice-
Than forms delight him more.

[blocks in formation]

1 JEHOVAH spake! wide chaos heard, And bowing to his sovereign word, Confusion, darkness fled;

While from the deep, the void profound, Celestial splendors shone around,

And new-born beauties spread.

2 Up rose the sun in cloudless light, And at meridian strength and height,

Beamed from his radiant throne; The moon was robed in silver rays, And mild, reflecting solar blaze; Bright gem'd the starry zone

3 "Let these be signs"-Jehovah said: From pole to pole the signs were spread, And mortals bade them hail!

For wisdom, love, and power shall be
Thy signs, O Lord, and lead to thee,
Beyond death's cloudy vale.

330. S. M.

1 GREAT God, with grateful tongue
To thee our thanks we raise;
Inspire our hearts to raise the song
Which celebrates thy praise.

2 Thy wisdom all things planned,
And all in love contrived;
From thy creative, forming hand,
Our being we derived.

3 Lord, in thy works and ways,
Around us and above,

Thy power in varied forms displays The tokens of thy love.

4 Beneath thy shelt'ring wings,
In safety we repose;

Thy mercies are the living springs
From which all blessing flows.

5 May we proclaim thy praise,
In every fleeting breath,
And be at last, through thy free grace,
Triumphant over death.

331. S. P. M.

1 THE Lord Jehovah reigns,
And royal state maintains,
His head with awful glories crowned:
Arrayed in robes of light,

Begirt with sovereign might,
And rays of majesty around.

2 Upheld by thy commands, The world securely stands,

And skies and stars obey thy word; Thy throne was fixed on high Ere stars adorned the sky: Eternal is thy kingdom, Lord.

3 Thy promises are true,

Thy grace is ever new,

On earth below-in heaven above;
We will, with holy fear,

In thy blest courts appear,

And sing thine everlasting love.
