548. L. M.

1 LET everlasting glories crown

Thy head, my Savior and my Lord; Thy hands have brought salvation down, And writ the blessing in thy word. 2 In vain the trembling conscience seeks Some solid ground to rest upon; With long despair the spirit breaks, Till we apply to Christ alone. 3 How well thy sacred truths agree!

How wise and holy each command! Thy promises, how firm they be!

How firm our hope and comfort stand! 4 Should all the forms that men devise Assault my faith with treach'rous art, I'd call them vanity and lies, And bind the gospel to my heart.

549. C. M.

1 ON Zion, his most holy mount,
God will a feast prepare,
And Israel's sons, and Gentile lands,
Shall in the banquet share.

2 See, to the vilest of the vile
A free acceptance given;
See rebels, by renewing grace,
Become the heirs of heaven.

3 The pained, the sick, the dying, now
To ease and health restored,
With eager appetites partake
The plenties of the board.

4 But, O, what draughts of bliss unknown,
What dainties, shall be given,
When, with the millions round the throne,
We join the feast of heaven!

5 There joys, immeasurably high,
Shall overflow the soul,

And springs of life, that never dry,
In thousand channels roll.

1 How rich thy bounty, King of kings! Thy favors how divine!

The blessings which thy gospel brings,
With truth and mercy shine!

2 Gold is but dross, and gems but toys,
Should gold and gems compare;
How mean, when set against those joys,
Thy poorest servants share!

3 Yet all these treasures of thy grace
Are lodged in urns of clay,
And the weak sons of mortal race
Immortal gifts convey.

4 Feebly they lisp thy glories forth,
Yet grace the victory gives:
Quickly they moulder back to earth,
Yet still the gospel lives.

5 Such wonders power divine effects;
Such trophies God can raise ;
His hand from crumbling dust erects
His monuments of praise.

1 THUS spake the Savior, when he sent His ministers to preach his word; They through the world obedient went, And spread the gospel of their Lord: 2 Go forth, ye heralds, in my name; Bid all the world my grace receive; The gospel jubilee proclaim,

And call them to repent and live. 3 The joyful news to all impart,

And teach them where salvation lies;
Bind up the broken, bleeding heart,
And wipe the tear from weeping eyes.
4 Be wise as serpents where you go,
But harmless as the peaceful dove,
And let your heaven-taught conduct show
That you're commissioned from above.
5 All power is vested in my hands ;
I will protect you and defend ;
Whilst thus you follow my commands,
I'm with you till the world shall end.
552. 8s & 7s.

1 MORTALS, will you scorn the message,
Sent in mercy from above?
Every sentence-O how tender!
Every line is full of love;

Listen to it

Every line is full of love.

2 Hear the heralds of the gospel,
News from Zion's King proclaim,
To each rebel sinner-' Pardon,
• Free forgiveness in his name!'
How important!

Free forgiveness in his name!

3 Tempted souls, they bring you succor;
Fearful hearts, they quell your fears:
And with news of consolation,
Chase away the falling tears:
Gospel heralds

Chase away the falling tears.

1 SWEET is the friendly voice
Which speaks of life and peace;
Which bids the penitent rejoice,
And sin and sorrow cease.

2 No balm on earth like this
Can cheer the contrite heart;
No flattering dreams of earthly bliss
Such pure delight impart.

3 Still merciful and kind,

Thy mercy, Lord, reveal:

The broken heart thy love can bind,
The wounded spirit heal.

4 Thy presence shall restore

Peace to the anxious breast:

Lord, let our steps be drawn no more From paths which thou hast blest.

1 COMFORT, ye ministers of grace, Comfort the children of your Lord, O lift ye up the fallen race,

And cheer them by the Gospel word. 2 Go into every nation, go,

Speak to their trembling hearts, and cry, Glad tidings unto all we show;

Jerusalem, thy God is nigh.

3 Hark! in the wilderness a cry,

A voice that loudly calls, Prepare!
Prepare your hearts, for God is nigh,

And means to make his entrance there! 4 The Lord shall clear his way through all: Whate'er obstructs, obstructs in vain; The vale shall rise, the mountain fall, Crooked be straight, and rugged plain. 5 The glory of the Lord displayed

Shall all mankind together view,
And what his mouth in truth hath said,
His own almighty hand shall do.

555. L. M.

1 How rich are thy provisions, Lord!
Thy table furnished from above!
The fruits of life o'erspread the board,
The cup o'erflows with heavenly love.

2 Thine ancient family, the Jews,
Were first invited to the feast:
We humbly take what they refuse,
And Gentiles thy salvation taste.
