14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath, and sat down.

16 Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand, said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience. 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm he brought them out of it.

19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he divided their land to them by lot. 20 And after that he gave to them judges, about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet.

21 And afterward they desired a king: and God gave to them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. 22 And when he had removed him, f he raised up to them David to be their king: to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who shall fulfill all my will.

23h Of this man's offspring hath God, according to his promise, raised up to Israel a Savior, Jesus:

24 John having first preached, before his coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25 And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. 26 Men, brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.

27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the words of the prophets| which are read every sabbath, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.

28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet they desired Pilate that he should be put to death.

29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulcher.

30m But God raised him from the dead:

31 And he was seen many days by them who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses to the people.

32 And we declare to you the glad tidings, that the promise which was made to the fathers,

33 God hath fulfilled the same to us!

42 And when the Jews had gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them 6 the next sabbath.

43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and reli5.gious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

44 And the next sabbath came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spoke against those things which were uttered by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas became and in ma-bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first be spoken to which is in you: but seeing ye reject it, and judge the Hebrew yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldst be for salvation to the ends of the earth.

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life, believed.

49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honorable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their borders.

51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

CHAP. XIV.

1 Paul and Barnabas are persecuted from Iconium. 8 At Lystra Paul healeth a crip ple; upon which they are reputed as gods. 19 Paul is stoned. 21 They pass through divers churches, confirming the disciples in faith and patience: 26 Returning to Antioch, they report what God had done with them.

Athey came to pass in her int, the ND it came to pass in Iconium, that synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke, that a great multitude both of the Jews, and also of the Greeks, believed.

2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evilaffected against the brethren.

3 A long time therefore they abode speaking boldly in the Lord, who gave testimony to the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

5 And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews, with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them,

6 Being apprised of it, they fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the region in that vicinity.

Rev. 14. 7.

7 And there they preached the gospel. Ps. 81. 12. 8 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who had never walked.

9 The same heard Paul speak: who steadfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

10 Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and, walked.

11 And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men.

12 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter, and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.

13 Then the priest of Jupiter, who was before their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.

14 Which, when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,

15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these. things? We also are men of like 1 passions with you, and preach to you, that ye should turn from these vanities to the living God, a who made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all things that are in them.

16 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.

restrained the people from doing sacrifice to them.

19 And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch, and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.

20 But as the disciples stood around him, he rose, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and to Antioch,

22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

23 And when they had ordained for them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

24 And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.

25 And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia:

26 And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been commended to the grace of God, for the work which they fulfilled.

27 And when they had come, and had assembled the church, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and that he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

28 And there they abode a long time with the disciples.

CHAP. XV.

1 Great dissension ariseth respecting circumcision: 6 The apostles consult about it, 22 and send their determination by letters to the churches. 36 Paul and Barnabas thinking to visit the brethren together, fall into strife, and separate.

AND certain men who came down

from Judea, taught the brethren, and said, a Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain others of them, should go to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question.

3 And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice, and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy to all the brethren.

4 And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church, and by the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.

5 But there rose certain of the sect of the Pharisees, who believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

6 And the apostles and elders came together to consider of this matter.

And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose and said to them, Men, brethren, ye know that a good b while ago, God made choice among us, that the Gentiles, by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

8 And God, who knoweth the hearts, bore them witness, giving to them the Holy Spirit, even as he did to us :

9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, d to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

11 But we believe, that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we shall be saved even as they.

12 ¶ Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought by them among the Gentiles.

13 And after they held their peace, James answered, saying, Men, brethren, hearken to me.

14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take from among them a people for his name.

15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins of it; and I will set it up: 17 That the residue of men may seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.

to you, with our beloved Barnabas and Paul:

26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who will also tell you the same things by mouth.

28 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

29 That ye abstain from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from lewdness: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye will do well. Fare ye well.

30 So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had convened the multitude, they delivered the epistle.

31 Which when they had read, they Matt. 23. 4. rejoiced for the 1 consolation.

32 And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed

19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, who from among the Gentiles are turned to God:

22 Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch, with Paul and Barnabas; c. 13. 13. namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren :

23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles, and elders, and brethren, send greeting to the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, and Syria, and Cilicia.

24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain who went out from us, have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law; to whom we gave no such commandment:

25 It seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men

Rom.16.21.

34 Notwithstanding, it pleased Silas to abide there still.

35 Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

36 And some days after, Paul said to Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren, in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.

37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.

38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed, separating one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed to Cyprus.

40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being commended by the brethren to the grace of God.

41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

11 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;

12 And from thence to Philippi, which is 1 the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.

13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spoke to the women who resorted thither.

14 T And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended to the things which were spoken by Paul.

15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there: And she constrained us.

16 And it came to pass as we went 4 or, at table. to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of 2 divination, met us, who brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, who show to us the way of salvation.

18 And this she did many days. But Paul being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the 3 market-place to the rulers,

20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

d ver. 14.

21 And teach customs which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

22 And the multitude rose together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, c and commanded to beat them.

23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely.

24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang prases to God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had fled.

28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas;

30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

32 And they spoke to him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, without delay.

34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set 4 food before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants, saying, Let those men go.

36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.

37 But Paul said to them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privately? no verily; but let them come themselves and bring us out.

38 And the sergeants told these words to the magistrates: and they feared when they heard that they were Romans.

39 And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.

40 And they went out of the prison, a and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

CHAP. XVII.

1 Paul preacheth at Thessalonica: 4 where some believe, and others persecute him: 10 He is sent to Berea, and preacheth there: 13 Being persecuted at Thessalonica, 15 he cometh to Athens, and disputeth and preacheth the living God to them unknown, 34 by which many are converted to Christ.

NOW

TOW when they had passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews.

2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in to them, and on three sabbaths reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

3 Opening and alledging, that it was needful that Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach to you, is Christ.

4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas: and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

5 But the Jews who believed not, moved with envy, took to them certain vile fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city in an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

when he saw the city 2 wholly given to idolatry.

17 Therefore he disputed in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoics, encountered him. And some said, What will this 3 babbler say? some others, He seemeth to be a setter-forth of 4 strange gods: because he preached to them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 And they took him, and brought him to 5 Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine is, of which thou speakest?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears; we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers who were there, spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 ¶ Then Paul stood in the midst of 6 Mars-hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your 7 devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I to you.

24 God that made the world, and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he is not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, for we are also his offspring.

29 Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like to gold, or silver, or stone graven by art and man's device.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
