to you, even I Paul, once and again; | but Satan hindered us.

19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of 6 rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

20 For ye are our glory and joy.

CHAP. III.

1 Saint Paul testifieth his great love to the Thessalonians; partly by sending Timothy to them to strengthen and comfort them; partly by rejoicing in their well-doing; 10 and partly by praying for them, and desiring a safe journey to them.

3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from lewdness.

3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed i to it.

4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter may have tempted you, and our labor be in vain.

6 But now when Timothy came from you to us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:

8 He therefore that 5 despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given to us his holy Spirit.

9 But concerning brotherly love ye need not that I write to you: for ye yourselves are a taught by God to love one another.

10 And indeed ye do it towards all the brethren who are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;

11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

12 That ye may walk honestly towards them that are without, and that ye may have need of nothing.

13 But I would not have you to be ig norant, brethren, concerning them who are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others who have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also who sleep in Jesus will God bring with

him.

15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain to the coming of the Lord shall not 6 precede them who are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an arch-angel, and with the trumpet of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore, comfort one another with these words.

4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5 Ye are all children of light, and children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

11 Wherefore, 1 comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

CHAP. III.

1 He craveth their prayers for himself, 3 testifieth what confidence he hath in them, 5 ma keth request to God in their behalf, 6 gives them divers precepts, especially to shun idie ness and ill company; and last of all, cas cludeth with prayer and salutation.

FINALLY, brethren,

a pray for us, that the word of the Lord I may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you;

2 And that we may be delivered from 2 unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

3 But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you, and keep you from 3 evil.

4 And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.

5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.

6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received from us.

7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;

8 Neither did we eat any man's bread for naught; but wrought with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:

9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves a pattern to you to follow us.

10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busy-bodies.

12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

13 But ye, brethren, 5 be not weary in well-doing.

14 And if any man obeyeth not our word 6 by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

17 The salutation of Paul with my own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

CHAP. IV.

1 He foretelleth that in the latter times there 1 or, kindshall be a departure from the faith. 6 Andness. to the end that Timothy might not fail in doing his duty, he furnisheth him with divers precepts.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if received with thanksgiving:

5 For it is sanctified by the word of God, and prayer.

6 If thou shalt put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou wilt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished by the words of faith and of good doctrine, to which thou hast attained.

7 But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather to godliness.

8 For bodily exercise profiteth 1 little: but godliness is profitable to all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

9 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation.

10 For therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God who is the 2 Savior of all men, especially of those that believe.

11 These things command and teach. 12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example 3 of the believers, in word, in deportment, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear 4 to all.

16 Take heed to thyself and to thy doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou wilt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
