CHAP. XXXIII. Of the last Judgment.

GOD hath appointed a day, wherein he will judge the world in righteousness by Jesus Christ a, to whom all power and judgment is given of the Fathers. In which day, not only the apostate angels shall be judged c; but likewise all persons, that have lived upon earth, (hall appear before the tribunal of Christ, to give an .account of their thoughts, words and deeds; and to receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil d.

II. The end of God's appointing this day is for the manifestation of the glory of his mercy, in the eternal salvation of the elect; and of his justice, in the damnation of the reprobate, who are wicked and disobedient. III. As Christ would to be certainly perswaded that there (hall be a day of judgment, both to deter all men from sin, and for the greater consolation of the godly in their adversity/! So will he have th3t day unknown to men, that they may lhake of all carnal security, and be always watchful, because cause they know not at what hour the Lord will come; and may be ever prepared to say, Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly. Amen.£.

But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment, v. 37. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou (halt be condemned.

Act approving the Larger Catechism.

fHE General Assembly, having exatlly examined and seriously considered the Larger Catechilhi, agreed upon by the Assembly of Divines fitting at Westminster, with assistance of Commissioners from this Kirk, copies thereof being printed, and sent to Presbyteries, for the more exacl trial thereof, and publick intimation being frequently made in this Assembly, that every one that had any doubts or objetlions upon it might put them in; do find, upon due examination thereof, that the said Catechism is agreeable to the -word of God, and in nothing contrary to the received dotlrine, •worship, discipline and government of this Kirk; a necessary part of the intended uniformity in religion, and a rich treasure for increasing knowledge among the people of God: and therefore the Assembly, as they bless the Lord, that so excellent a Catechism is prepared; so they approve the same, as a part of uniformity; agreeing, for their part, that it be a common Catechism for the three' kingdoms, and a directory for Catechising such as have made some proficiency in the knowledge of the Grounds of Religion.
