the pitiful and merciful, forgive; hear our prayers, and grant our request; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Mozarabic.

MAY the Almighty God order our days

in His peace, and grant us the gifts of

His blessing. Amen.

That, being adorned with the jewels of faith and hope and charity, we may pass unharmed through the present life, and safely reach the life eternal. Amen.

Gregorian.

TRUE Light, which lightenest every man that cometh into this world, lighten my eyes that I sleep not in death.

O Fire that ever burnest, and never failest, lo, I am lukewarm, yea, cold. Kindle my heart that it may be on fire with love of Thee. For Thou camest to send a fire upon earth, and what willest Thou but that it be kindled?

O King of heaven and earth, rich in mercy; lo, I am poor and needy. Thou alone canst enrich me. Help me then, O my God, and out of the treasury of Thy goodness succour my poor soul.

Lo, I am Thy servant; give me understanding, and kindle my affections, that I may know and do Thy will.

Amen.

E. B. Pusey.

Act of Faith

FIRMLY believe, O my God, that Thou art One God in Three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, and that God the Son was made Man and died for us. Moreover, I believe all the truths which the Church believes and teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, who canst neither deceive nor be deceived.

Act of Hope

MY God, relying upon Thy infinite power and mercy, and the precious Blood of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, I hope to obtain the forgiveness of my sins and everlasting life and I hereby resolve, by Thy grace, to perform all that Thou hast revealed to me of Thy holy will.

Act of Love

MY God, because Thou art of infinite goodness, and most worthy of all love, I love Thee with my whole heart, and above all things and for Thy sake I love my neighbour as myself.

GOD Almighty bless me, and of His mercy

vouchsafe to defend me, His presence

and His love sustain and direct me. Amen.

LITANIES

I.

(From the Book of Common Prayer)

We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

THAT

HAT it may please thee to strengthen such as do stand; and to comfort and help the weak-hearted; and to raise up those who fall; and finally to beat down Satan under our feet:

That it may please thee to succour, help, and comfort, all who are in danger, necessity, and tribulation:

That it may please thee to preserve all who travel by land or by water, all women in the perils of childbirth, all sick persons, and young children; and to show thy pity upon all prisoners and captives:

That it may please thee to defend, and provide for, the fatherless children, and widows, and all who are desolate and oppressed;

That it may please thee to have mercy upon all men;

That it may please thee to forgive our enemies, persecutors, and slanderers, and to turn their hearts;

That it may please thee to give and preserve to our use the kindly fruits of the earth, so that in due time we may enjoy them;

That it may please thee to give us true repentance; to forgive us all our sins, negligences, and ignorances; and to endue us with the grace of thy Holy Spirit to amend our lives according to thy Holy Word;

We beseech Thee to hear us, good Lord. Son of God, we beseech Thee to hear us. O Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world;

Grant us thy peace.

O Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world;

Have mercy upon us.

Let us pray

WE humbly beseech thee, O Father, mer

cifully to look upon our infirmities; and, for the glory of thy Name, turn from us all those evils that we most justly have deserved; and grant that in all our

troubles we may put our whole trust and confidence in thy mercy, and evermore serve thee in holiness and pureness of living, to thy honour and glory; through our only Mediator and Advocate, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

II.

(From The Treasury of Devotion)

RACIOUSLY hear us, O Christ.
Graciously hear us, O Lord Christ.

That this and every day may be employed to the perfecting of holiness in Thy fear, and sweetened with the comforts of health, of peace, and innocence;

Grant, O Good Lord.

That all the sins, offences, and neglects of my days already gone may, by Thy mercy, be freely pardoned and entirely done

away;

Grant, O Good Lord.

That it may please Thee to bless the world with prosperity and peace, but chiefly with such mercies as Thou knowest to be most expedient; for the good of all our souls;

Grant, O Good Lord.
