commandments, that we may ever diligently seek to fulfill them, and that we may apprehend the eternal joys of the heavenly life; through our Lord Jesus Christ.

GIV

Venerable Bede.

IVE me, O Lord, purity of lips, a clean and innocent heart, and rectitude of action. Give me humility, patience, abstinence, chastity, prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance. Give me the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and godliness, and of Thy fear. Make me ever to seek Thy face with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind; grant me to have a contrite and humbled heart in Thy presence, to prefer nothing to Thy love. Most high, eternal, and ineffable Wisdom, drive away from me the darkness of blindness and ignorance; most high and eternal Strength, deliver me; most high and eternal Fortitude, assist me; most high and imcomprehensible Light, illuminate me; most high and infinite Mercy, have mercy on me. Gallican.

GRANT, Almighty God, that by Thy

mercy our minds may not be cast down by any troubles of this life; that no hurtful temptation may have dominion over them,

nor any darkness of unbelief hold them captive; but, illuminated by the light of Thy countenance shining upon us, may we ever walk securely upon the sure ground of the true Faith. Amen. Mozarabic.

GOD, let me not seek out of Thee what I can only find in Thee, peace and rest, and joy and bliss. Lift up my soul above the weary round of harassing thoughts to Thine eternal Presence, to the pure, serene, radiant atmosphere of Thy Presence, that there I may breathe freely, there repose in Thy love, there be at rest from myself, and from all things which weary me; and thence return, arrayed with Thy peace, to do and to bear whatsoever shall please Thee. Let nothing disturb my soul, fixed on Thee; nothing draw it down, upheld by Thee; nothing turn it aside, directed by Thee. With my whole heart may I seek Thee, and seeking Thee may I find Thee; and finding Thee may I stretch forth unto Thee, and never cease or fail to stretch forth unto Thee, until in the end, by Thy grace and mercy, I may arrive at Thee. Let me not be discouraged, O God, my hope. Give me perseverance unto the end, that living or dying I may be Thine; through the merits of Jesus Christ my Lord and my God. E. B. Pusey.

THOU who art the everlasting essence

of things, beyond space and time, and yet within them; Thou who transcendest yet pervadest all things; manifest Thyself unto us, feeling after Thee, and seeking Thee in the shades of ignorance. Stretch forth Thy hand to help us, who cannot without Thee come to Thee; and reveal Thyself unto us who seek nothing beside Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Johannes Scotus Erigena.

RESTORE unto me the joy of Thy sal

vation." I recall how great peace, how great tranquility of soul I did enjoy, when I rejoiced in the Lord, and exulted in God my Jesus. Yea, now I grieve the more, because I know what I have lost. I know what very great benefits I have lost. Yea, I clamor importunately, "Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation": Restore what Thou hast taken away from me on account of my sins: restore what I have lost through my own fault: restore, I beseech Thee, through His merits, who ever standeth at Thy right hand and maketh intercession for us. That through Him I may feel that Thou art reconciled to me; that the seal is set upon my heart; that I may say with

the Apostle I am nailed to the Cross with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.

MOST merciful Jesus, grant to me

Thy grace, that it may be with me, and work with me, and continue with me even to the end. Grant that I may always desire and will that which is to Thee most acceptable, and most dear. Let Thy will be mine, and let my will ever follow Thine, and agree perfectly with it.

Thomas à Kempis.

ASSIST us mercifully, O Lord, in these

our supplications and prayers, and dispose the way of thy servants towards the attainment of everlasting salvation; that, among all the changes and chances of this mortal life, they may ever be defended by thy most gracious and ready help; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE

HE Almighty, Merciful God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, bless and preserve us, now and forevermore. Amen.

SECTION IX

INTERCESSIONES

THESE words spake Jesus, and said: Father, I pray for them which thou hast given me, for they are thine. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. . . . . Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word. Father, I will that they whom thou hast given me be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me; for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. St. John xvii.

Let us beseech the Lord in peace,
for the heavenly peace,

and the salvation of our souls;

for the peace of the whole world; for the stability of God's holy Churches, and the union of them all;

for all the faithful;

for salubrious weather, fruitfulness of earth;
