Wilt from the dreadful day remove
Before the evil come,

My spirit hide with saints above,
My body in the tomb.

CXXXVII.

1. O Thou, whose tender mercy hears,
CONTRITION's humble sigh;

Whose hand indulgent wipes the tears
From sorrows weeping eye.

2. See low before thy throne of grace,
A wretched wanderer mourn:
Hast thou not bid me seek thy face?
Hast thou not said-return?

3 And shall my guilty fears prevail
To drive me from thy feet?
Oh! let not this dear refuge fail,
This only safe retreat.

4. Absent from thee, my guide! my light !

Without one cheering ray:

Through dangers, fears, and gloomy night, How desolate my way !

5. Oh! shine on this benighted heart,
With beams of mercy shine!
And let thy healing voice impart
A taste of joys divine.

CXXXVIII.

1. Sweet Peace of Conscience, heav'nly
Come fix thy mansion in my breast, (guest!
Dispel my doubts, my fears controul,
And heal the anguish of my soul.

2. Come smiling Hope, and Joy sincere, Come, make your constant dwelling here; Still let your presence cheer my heart, Nor sin compel you to depart.

3. Thou God of hope, and peace divine,
O, make these sacred pleasures mine!
Forgive my sins, my fears remove,
And send the tokens of thy love.

4. Then should mine eyes without a tear,
See death, with all his terrors near;
My heart should then in Death rejoice,
And raptures tune my falt ring voice.

5. Nay should the frame of nature fall,
And flames surround this earthly ball,
Ev'n then my soul without dismay,
The mighty ruin would survey.

6. Yes, far beyond these lower skies
New worlds salute my longing eyes;
Blest worlds! where peace her throne mai 1-T
And everlasting glory reigns.

CXXXIX.

1. Cor. 13.

1. Tho' perfect Eloquence adorn'd
My sweet persuasive tongue;
Tho' I could speak in higher strains
Than ever angel sung.

2. Tho' prophecy my soul inspir'd,
And made all mysteries plain;
Yet were I void of christian LOVE,
These gifts were all in vain.

3. Nay tho' my Faith with boundless pow'r,&

The mountain could remove;

I still am nothing if I'm void,
And destitute of Love.

4. Altho' with liberal hand I gave,
My goods the poor to feed:
Nay gave my body to the flames,
Still fruitless were the deed.

5. Oh! Saviour, send this heav'nly grace
And fill our souls with Love,
That we below, thy steps may trace,
And reign with thee above.

CXL.

1. Far from the world, O Lord, I flee,
From strife and tumult far;
From scenes where Satan wages still
His most successful war.

2. The calm retreat, the silent shade,
With prayer and praise agree;
And seem by thy sweet bounty made,
For those who follow thee.

3. There if thy spirit touch the soul, And grace her mean abode,

Oh, with what Peace, and Joy, and Love, She communes with her God!

4. There like the Nightingale she pours

Her solitary lays ;

Nor asks a witness of her song,

Nor thirsts for human praise.

5. Author and Guardian of my life,
Sweet source of light divine,
And (all harmonious names in one)
My SAVIOUR thou art mine.

6. What thanks I owe thee, and what love, A boundless, endless store,

Shall echo thro' the realms above,
When time shall be no more.

CXLI.

1. WORLD, adieu thou real cheat Oft have thy deceitful charms

Fill'd my

heart with fond conceit

Foolish hopes and false alarms, Now I see as clear as day :

How thy follies pass away.
