His torments ev'ry one : How angels fear'd, and mortals jeer'd, Blafphem'd and spit upon.

3. His head how torn with thorns, his face (Divinely bright before)

4.

How marr'd more than the fons of men, Reeking with fweat and gore!

See in his hands and feet the nails

Piercing the tender veins!

See how each wound the blushing ground With precious tincture ftains!

5. See water mix'd with crimson blood, Spouting thro' his fide wound;

A ftream wherein we're wafh'd from fin, And all our guilt is drown'd!

6. But, O! what terrors wreck'd his foul In that laft agony. When (e'er he dy'd) "My GoD, he cry'd, "Why haft forfaken me?

7. Thus groan'd and dy'd the Son of GOD, That we might ever live;

There, where all blifs our fouls can wish,
Or can contain, He'll give.

8. Mean while the myft'ries of his grace
His table here difplays;

O how his love our fouls fhould move,
And tongues to fing his praife!

5. Thus fin, death, and the pow'rs of hell
Conquer'd, difarm'd, and wounded fell!
He mounted then his throne above,
And conquers finners by his love.

6. LORD, fince our pardon and our blifs
Were bought at fuch a price as this;
As thou art ours, we're thine alone,
Thine will we be, and not our own,

Y bleffed SAVIOUR, is thy love
So great, fo full, fo free?
Behold, I give my love, my heart,
My life, my all to thee!

2. I love Thee for the glorious worth
In thy great felf I see;

I love Thee for that shameful cross
Thou haft endur'd for me.

3. No man of greater love can boast,
Than for his friend to die;
But Thou for enemies waft flain

What love with thine can vie?
4. Tho' in the very form of GoD,
With heav'nly glory crown'd,
Thou would'ft partake of human flesh,
Befet with troubles round.

5. Thou would'ft, like wretched man, be made In ev'ry thing but fin;

1

That we as like Thee might become,

As we unlike have been.

6, Like Thee in faith, in meeknefs, love, In ev'ry beauteous grace;

From glory thus to glory chang'd,
As we behold thy face.

7. O LORD, I'll treasure in my
The mem'ry of Thy love;

CDXI. The Greatnefs of Chrift's Love.

Y

E happy guests, who meet around This table, your oblations bring: Here ev'ry one's a prieft, who has A heart to love, and tongue to fing. 2. Our SAVIOUR's bleeding facrifice, His boundless love and grace displays; As a juft homage, He demands Our facrifice of love and praise. [3. 'Twas love expos'd Him to reproach, To unexampled grief and pain : Lefs pow'r than that of love divine Nor would nor could his cross fuftain.] 4. See Him abandon'd by his friends; By a perfidious kifs betray'd; Sold as a defpicable slave;

5.

With fwords and staves a pris'ner made!
See Him to the tribunal led;

There charg'd with crimes by men fuborn'd;
By princes and by priests condemn'd;
And by the vileft wretches fcorn'd!

6. That aweful face, which low respect From proftrate angels did command, Spit on by men of fervile ftate,

And ftruck by each rude foldier's hand. 7. Bearing his cross to Golgotha,

With lab'ring fteps behold Him go!
And from his wounds, when open'd there,
O fee what crimfon rivers flow!

8. Plung'd in thefe ftreams, our guilty fouls
Purg'd from their num'rous fins fhall be;
Juftice and mercy, tho' provok'd
By us, O LORD, are pleas'd with Thee.
9. O LAMB of GOD, who bor'ft our guilt,
To Thee immortal praise belongs:
While we Thy love and fuff'rings fing,
Angels fhall hear, and join their fongs.

1 CDXII. The King at his Table. 1. BEHOLD the KING of Glory fits

At table with his guests! Welcomes them all with gracious smiles, Them all with dainties feafts!

2. No common food He here presents, No common drink provides:

For meat He gives his flesh; for wine, The fpear his heart divides.

3. LORD, give us faith to raise our thoughts, 1. WHAT a foul-transporting feaft

Beyond the views of fenfe; Teach us thy myft'ries to difcern, And draw new joys from thence ! 4. Let's know thy wounded body fell An off'ring for our guilt;

Let's know, to wash us from our fins, Thy heart's pure blood was spilt! 5. So fhall our minds and voices join, In facred harmony,

Doth this communion yield! Rememb'ring here Thy paffion past, We with thy love are fill'd.

2. Sure inftrument of prefent grace Thy facrament we find ;

Yet higher bleffings it difplays,

And raptures ftill behind.

4. Teach us to wash our garments clean
In the pure fountain of thy blood;
LORD, purge our fouls from ev'ry stain
I' th' ftreams of that all-cleanfing flood.
5. Each fin of ours has been a thorn,
A cruel nail, a whip, a fpear:
By thefe Thy facred flesh was torn,
Thefe did thy foul with horror tear.
6. Yet ev'ry wound of thine does yield
A balfam for a contrite heart;
Which, on the painful fore diftill'd,
Heals and allays the tort'ring smart.

7. Amazing love! 'tis infinite!

No thoughts its endless depth can found;

CDXVIII. The Communion of Saints.

HE feaft we celebrate,

ΤΗ

We call a feast of love: The facred fymbols friendship thew, On earth, and peace above.

As many grains, compact, Do conftitute one bread; So all the faints one body are, In union with their head.

In faith, hope, love, and joy, The Holy Ghoft's their guide; One GoD they have, one covenant, One kingdom fhall divide.

[4. The broken bread we eat,

Partaking of the whole;

Thus many faints are all one bread,
Enliven'd by one foul.]
