1. HOSANNA, with a chearful found, To GoD's upholding hand;

Ten thoufand fnares attend us round,
And yet fecure we ftand.

2. The ev'ning refts our weary head,
And angels guard the room;
We wake, and we admire the bed,
That was not made our tomb.
3. The rifing morning can't affure
That we fhall end the day;
For death ftands ready at the door
To feize our lives his prey.

High on the broken wave,
They know Thou art not flow to hear,
Nor impotent to fave.

4. The ftorm is laid, the winds retire,
Obedient to thy will

The fea, that roars at Thy command,
At Thy command is still

OW honourable is the place
Where we adoring ftand;

Sion the glory of the earth,

And beauty of the land!

2. Bulwarks of mighty grace defend
The city where we dwell;
The walls, of ftrong falvation made,
Defy th' affaults of hell.

3. Lift up the everlasting gates,
The doors wide open fling
Enter ye nations that obey

The ftatutes of our king!

4. Here fhall ye tafte uniningled joys,
And live in perfe& peace;

Ye that have known JEHOVAH's name,
And ventur'd on His grace,

3.

Let faith arife and climb the hills,
And from afar defcry

How diftant are His chariot wheels,
And tell how faft they fly.

4. Lo, I behold the fcatt'ring fhades,
The dawn of heav'n appears;
The fweet immortal morning fpreads
Its blushes round the spheres!
5. I fee the LORD of glory come,
And flaming guards around:
The fkies divide to make Him room,
The trumpet shakes the ground.
6. I hear the voice, "Ye dead arise,”
And lo, the graves obey;
Ard waking faints, with joyful eyes,
Salute th expected day.

7. They leave the duft, and on the wing Rife to the middle air;

In fhining garments meet their KING,

3. God from on high invites us home,
But we march heedlefs on;
And ever haft'ning to the tomb,

Stoop downwards as we run.

4. Draw us, O GOD, with fov'reign grace,
And lift our thoughts on high;
That we may end this mortal race,
And fee falvation nigh!.

CXLVII. God holy, juf, and fovereign.
WOW fhould the fons of Adam's race

H. Be pure before their GOD?

If He contend in righteousness,

We fall beneath his rod.

2. To vindicate my words and thoughts
I'll make no more pretence;
Not one of all my thoufand faults

Can bear a juft defence.

3. Strong is His arm, His heart is wife;
What vain prefumers dare
Against their maker's hand to rife,
Or tempt th' unequal war?
14. Mountains, by His almighty wrath,
From their old feats are torn ;

He fhakes the earth from fouth to north,
And all her pillars mourn.

5. He bids the fun forbear to rise,

Th' obedient fun forbears;

His hand with fackcloath fpreads the skies, And feals up all the stars.

6. He walks upon the raging fea;

I.

Flies on the ftoriny wind;

There's none can trace His wondrous way, Of His dark footiteps find.]

§ CXLVIII. Redeeming Love.

H

WOW word'rous are the works of God Difplay'd thro' all the world abroad!

[blocks in formation]

4. But what are feas, or fkies, or hills
Or verdant vales, or gliding rills
To wonders man was born to prove?
The wonders of redeeming love!

5. 'Tis far beyond what words express,
What faints can feel, or angels guess :
Angels that hymn the great I AM,
Fall down and veil before the LAMB.
6. The highest heav'ns are fhort of this;
'Tis deeper than the vast abyss;

'T'is more than thought can e'er conceive;
Or hope expect, or faith receive.

7. Almighty GoD breath'd human breath,
The LORD of LIFE experienc'd death;
How it was done, we can't difcufs,
Only we know 'twas done for us:

8. Blefs'd with this faith, then let us raise
Our hearts in love, our voice in praise ;
All things to us must work for good,
For whom the LORD has fhed his blood.
§ CXLIX. The divine Glories above our
Reafon.
