But we, more base,more brutish things,
Reject His eafy reign.]

Turn, turn us, mighty GoD,

And mould our fouls afrefh

Break, fov'reign grace, these hearts of stone, And give us hearts of flesh!

Let old ingratitude

Provoke our weeping eyes; And hourly as new mercies fall, Let hourly thanks arise !

CLXV. Longing for Glory.

1. JERUSALEM, my happy home,

When fhall I go to thee?
When fhall my labors have an end,
Thy joys that I may fee?

2. Thy gates are richly fet with pearls,
Moft glorious to behold!
Thy walls are all of precious ftone,
Thy streets are pav'd with gold!

3. Thy gardens and thy pleasant fruits,
Continually are green;

There are fuch fweet and pleasant flow'rs,
As ne'er before were seen.

4. If beav'n be thus glorious, LORD,
Why am I kept from thence?
What folly is't that makes me loth
To die, and go from hence?

5. For there my dear REDEEMER dwells, Him would I gladly fee!

And all my friends in CHRIST below,

Will foon come after me.

6. Reach down, O LORD, Thy arm of
And help me to ascend,

Where the affemblies ne'er break up,
And fabbaths ne'er will end.

1. YESU, attend, Thyfelf reveal!
Are we not met in thy great name?
Thee in the midst we wait to feel,
We wait to catch the fpreading flame.
2. Thou GoD, that anfwereft by fire,
The fpirit of burning now impart ;
And let the flames of pure defire
Rife from the altar of our heart.
Truely our fellowship below
With Thee and with thy father is
In Thee eternal life we know,
And heav'n's unutterable bliss.
4. In part we only know Thee here,
But wait thy coming from above;
And we fhall then behold Thee near,
And we fhall all be loft in love.

CLXVII. At the parting of Friends. 4-6 and 2-8.

JESUS

JESUS, accept the praise
That to Thy name belongs,
Matter of all our lays,

Subject of all our fongs;

Thro' Thee we now together came,
And part exulting in Thy name!

In flesh we part a-while
(But ftill in fpirit join'd)
T'embrace the happy toil

Thou haft for each affign'd: And while we do Thy bleffed will, We bear our heav'n about us ftill. O let us then go on

In all Thy pleasant ways; And arm'd with patience run With joy th' appointed race:

Kee

Keep us, and ev'ry feeking foul,
Till all attain the heav'nly goal!
There we shall meet again,
When all our toils are o'er,
And death, and grief, and pain,
And parting is no more:
We fhall with all our brethren rife,
And grafp Thee in the flaming fkies.
5. O happy, happy day,

That calls Thy exiles home!
The heav'ns fhall pass away,

The earth receive its doom, Earth we fhall view, and heav'n deftroy'd, And fhout above the fiery void.

6. These eyes shall fee them fall,

Mountains, and ftars, and skies;
Thefe eyes fhall fee them all

Out of their afhes rife ;-
Thefe lips His praises fhall rehearse,
Whofe nod reftores the universe.

7. According to His word,

His oath to finners giv❜n,
We look to fee reftor'd

The ruin'd earth and heav'n;

In a new world His truth to prove, A world of righteoufnefs and love. 8. Then let us wait the found

That fhall our fouls release,
And labor to be found

Of Him in fpotless peace;
In perfect holiness renew'd,

Adorn'd with CHRIST and meet for GOD.

$ CLXVIII. The Son of God abafed.

[ESUS! all praife is due to Thee,
That Thou wert pleas'd a man to be!

[blocks in formation]

He, who the world's foundation laid,
Is now a little infant made.

4. The SoN, the mighty GoD confefs'd,
In his own world becomes a guest!
And therefore poor on earth He came,
That we might all his riches claim.
5. The everlasting light we view,
Giving the world a luftre new ;
His beams difpel the dufky night,
And make us children of the light.

6. For us thefe wonders He hath wrought,
To fhew His love furpaffing thought;
For this we all will joyful be,
And thank HIM thro' eternity,

I.

CLXIX. Defiring Chrift's Defcent to Earth.

JES

ESUS, I love. Come dearest name ! Come and poffefs this heart of mine! I love, tho' 'tis a fainter flame,

And infinitely less than thine.

2. O! if my LORD would leave the skies,
Dreft in the rays of mildeft grace;
My foul fhould haften to my eyes,
To meet the pleasures of his face.
How would I feaft on all His charms,
Then round his lovely feet entwine!
Worship and love, in all their forms,
Should honor beauty fo divine.

CLXX. Chrift a Shelter under a fenfe of 1. Sin. 4-7 or 8-75.

[ESU, lover of my foul,

JESU

Let me to thy bofom fly While the billows near me roll, While the tempest still is high: Hide me, O my SAVIOUR, hide, Till the storm of life is past Safe into the haven guide,

O receive my foul at last!

2. Other refuge have I none,

Hangs my helpless foul on Thee;
Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
Still fupport and comfort me
All my trust on Thee is ftay'd,

All my help from Thee I bring;
Cover my defenceless head

With the fhadow of thy wing!
3. Thou, O CHRIST, art all I want,
Boundless love in Thee I find;
Raife the fallen, chear the faint,
Heal the fick and lead the blind.
Juft and holy is thy name,

I am all unrighteousness;

Vile and full of fin I am,

Thou art full of truth and grace.

Plentious grace with Thee is found,
Grace to pardon all my fin 3
Let the healing ftreams abound,
Make and keep me pure within ;
Thou of life the fountain art,
Freely let me take of Thee;
Spring Thou up within my heart!
Rife to all eternity!

CLXXI. Relieving Chrift in his Members.

Jhy bounties how complete !

ESUS, our LORD, how rich Thy grace!

How fhall we count the matchlefs fum ?
How pay the mighty debt?

^2. High on a throne of radiant light,
Doft Thou exalted fhine;
What can our poverty beftow,

4.

When all the worlds are Thine?
But Thou haft brethren here below,
The partners of Thy grace;

And will confefs their humble names
Before Thy father's face.

In them Thou may't be cloath'd and fed,
And yifited and chear'd;

And in their accents of diftrefs,

Our faviour's voice is heard.

To the realms of glory's gone, To afcend his rightful throne. 2. Cherubs on the conqu'ror gaze, Seraphs glow with brighter blaze: Each bright order of the sky. Hail Him as He paffes by. 3. Heav'n its king congratulates, Opens wide her golden gates; Angels fongs of vict'ry fing, All the blissful regions ring. 4. Saints the glorious triumph greet, See their en'mies at his feet; By his fears his toils are view'd And his garments roll'd in blood ! 5. Sinners, join the heav'nly pow'rs; For Redemption all is ours! None but burden'd finners prove Blood-bought pardon, dying love.

6. Hail, Thou dear, thou worthy LORD!
Holy LAMB, incarnate word !
Hail Thou fuff'ring Son of GOD!
Take the trophies of thy blood.

CLXXIII. Chrift's Message.
I' JESUS, the rifing LORD of all,
His love to man commends,
Poor worms He blushes not to call
His brethren and His friends.

2. Who bafely all forfook their LORD
In His diftrefs, and fled,

To thefe He fends the joyful word,
When rifen from the dead.

3. Go tell the vile deferters! No:

My dearest brethren tell, Their advocate to heav'n I go, To rescue them from Hell.

4. Lo! to my FATHER Lafcend !
Your FATHER now is he,

My GoD, and Yours, whoe'er depend
For endless life on Me.

5 Henceforth I ever live above,
For you to intercede;
The merit of my dying love,
For all mankiud to plead.

6. Sinners, I rofe again to fhew
Your fins are all forgiv'n;

And mount above the skies, that you
May follow me to heav'n.

CLXXIV. Whitfunday, defiring the Comforter. 6-8.

ESUS we hang upon the word,

JES

Our faithful fouls have heard of thee; Be mindful of thy promife, LORD, Thy promife made to all and me, Thy foll'wers, who thy fteps pursue, And dare believe that God is true. 2. Thou faid'ft I will the father pray, And he the PARACLETE fhall give; Shall give him in your hearts to stay, And never more his temple leave. Myfelf will to my orphans come, And make you mine eternal home.

3. Come then, dear LORD, Thyfelf reveal, And let the promife now take place; Be it according to thy will

4.

According to thy word of grace;
Thy forrowful difciples chear,

And fend us down the CoMFORTER.
He vifits now the troubled breast,
And oft relieves our fad complaints;
But foon we lose the tranfient guest,
Too foon we droop again and faint;

Where wit and reafon fail

EADER of faithful fouls, our guide!
We travel to the sky;
Come, and with us, e'en us, abide;
Who would on thee rely !`

2. Strangers and pilgrims here below,
This earth is not our place;
We haften thro' the vale of woe,
Reftlefs to view Thy face.
