Who with another's eye can read?
Or worship by another's creed ?
Revering thy commands alone,
We humbly seek and use our own.

If wrong forgive, approve if right,
While faithful we obey our light,
And cens'ring none, are zealous ftill
To follow as to learn thy will.

5. When fhall our happy eyes behold Thy people fashioned in thy mould; And charity our lineage prove

1.

Deriv'd from thee, thou Gob of love?

+ VIII. Chrift rifing from the dead.

ALL ye that feek the LORD,

who died, Your God for finners crucified, Prevent the earliest darn, and come To worship at bis facred tomb. 2. Bring the feet Spices of your fighs,

Your contrite hearts and ftreaming eyes,
Your fad complaints, and bumble fears;
Come, and embalm him with your tears.
3.While thus ye love your fouls t'employ,
Your forrow fhall be turn'd to joy;
Now, now let all your grief be d'er!
Believe; and ye hall weep no more.

4. The third aufpicious morn is come, And calls our SAVIOUR from the tomb An earthquake hath the cavern fhook, And burft the door, and rent the rock. 5. The LORD hath fent his angel down, And he hath roll'd away the ftone. As fnow behold his garment white, His countenance as lightning bright; 6. The bands of death are torn away, The yawning tomb gives back its prey; The feal is broke, the ftone caft by, And all the pow'rs of darkness fly.

7. The body breathes, and lifts its head,
The keepers fink, and fall as dead
The dead restor'd to life appear,
The living quake and die for fear.
8. The LORD of LIFE is ris'n indeed,
To death deliver'd in your ftead ;
His rife proclaims your fins forgiv'n,
And fhews the living way to heav'n.
9. Hate then, ye fouls that first believe,
Who dare the Gofpel word receive;
Your faith with joyful hearts confess;
Be bold, be JESU's witneffes.

10. Go tell the followers of your LORD

Their JESUS is to life reftor'd;
He lives, that they His life may find;
He lives, to quicken all mankind.
+ IX. Sincere Praife.
LMIGHTY maker, GoD!

Thy glories how diffus'd abroad Through the creation's frame ! Nature in ev'ry dress

Her humble homage pays,

And finds a thousand ways t'express Thine undiffembled praife.

X. Repentance flowing from the patienc

[3.

In native white and red

The rofe and lily stand;

And, free from pride, their beauties fpread,

1.

To fhew thy fkilful hand.

4.

The lark mounts up the sky,

With unambitious fong;

And bears her Maker's praife on high
Upon her artlefs tongue.]

5. My foul would rife and fing
To her Creator too;

6.

Fain would my tongue adore my King,
And pay the worship due.

But pride, that busy fin,
Spoils all that I perform;
Curs'd pride, that creeps fecurely in,
And fwells a haughty worm.

7. Thy glorics I abate,

Or praife Thee with defign;
Some of the favors I forget,

Or think the merit mine.

18. The very fongs I frame

Are faithlefs to Thy caufe;

And steal the honours of thy name
To build their own applaufe.]

9.. Create my foul anew,

Elfe all my worship's vain!

This wretched heart will ne'er be true. Until 'tis form'd again!

Defcend, celeftial fire,

And feize me from above;
Melt me in flames of pure defire,
A facrifice to love!

Let joy and worip fpend
The remnant of my days,
And to my Goo, my foul afcend
In fweet perfumes of praife!

of God

AND are we wretches yet alive?

And do we yet rebel ?

'Tis boundlefs, 'tis amazing love
That bears us up from hell.

2. The burthen of our weighty guilt
Would fink us down to flames ;
And threat'ning vengeance rolls above
To cruth our feeble frames.

3. Almighty Goodnefs cries, forbear,
And ftraight the thunder ftays:
And dare we now provoke His wrath,
And weary out His grace?

4. LORD, we have long abus'd Thy love,
Too long induig'd our fin;
Our aking hearts e'en bleed to
What rebels we have been.

3. No more, ye lufts, shall ye
No more will we obey;

command,

Stretch out, O GOD, thy conq'ring hand, And drive thy foes away!

XI. Faith in God difpels all fear.

AND art Thou with us, gracious LORD,

To diffipate our fear?

Doft Thou proclaim thyfelf our GoD,
Our God for ever near?

2. Doth Thy right hand, which form'd the
And bears up all the skies, fearth,
Stretch from on high its friendly aid
When dangers round us rife ?

3. Doft thou a father's pity feel,
For all thy humble faints?
And in fuch tender accents speak,
To footh their fad complaints ?

XIII. God to be loved above all.

AND is it yet, dear LORD, a doubt,
If in my breaft Thou reign'ft alone?
O find the lurking rival out,

And drag the traitor from the throne!
2. Would earth's delufive trifling charms.
Affume a pow'r above Thy name ?
Stab each ufurper in my arms,
And vindicate Thy rightful claim!
3. By purchase, duty, ev'ry tie,
Yea, choice itfelf, LORD, I am Thine;
Maintain that tight, or let me die
E'er from Thy love my foul decline!
4. If my unfteady heart would rove, [frame,
And well Thou know'ft its treach'rous
If ought below, or ought above
Would fhare or quench the facred flame
5. Chafe the curft object from my foul,
Thence, thence the twining mifchief tear
Reign Thou the fov'reign of the whole,
Be LORD of ev'ry motion there!

Dear LORD, what heav'nly wonders dwell 1.
In Thy atoning blood!

By this are finners fnatch'd from hell,

And rebels brought to God.

5. JESUS, my foul, adoring bends To love fo full fo free;

And may I hope that love extends

Its facred pow'r to me?

6. What glad return can I impart
For favors fo divine?

O take my all-this worthless heart,
And make it only Thine.

XIV. Triumph over Death.
AND muft this body die?
This mortal frame decay?

And must these active limbs of mine
Lie mould'ring in the clay?

Corruption, earth, and worms
Shall but refine this flesh;

Till my triumphant fpirit comes,
To put it on afresh.

GOD, my Redeemer, lives;
And, ftooping from the skies,
Looks down and watches all my duft,
Till He fhall bid it rife.

ANGELI roll the rock away,

[ocr errors]

Death, yield up thy mighty prey;
See He rifes from the tomb
Glowing in immortal bloom.·
2. 'Tis the SAVIOUR, angels raife
Fame's eternal trump of praife:
Let the world's remoteft bound
Hear the joy-infpiring found.

3. Shout, ye faints, in rapturous fong,
Let the ftrains be fweet and ftrong;
Shout the son of GoD, this morn
From his fepulchre newly born.
4. Hail victorious JESUS, hail;
On thy cloud of Glory fail,
In long triumph thro' the sky,
Up to waiting worlds on high.
5. Heav'n difplays her portals wide,
Glorious hero thro' them ride ;

KING of GLORY, mount the throne, Thy great FATHER's and thy own! 6. Pow'rs of heav'n, feraphic fires,

Sing and fweep your founding lyres; Sons of men, in humble strain, Sing your mighty SAVIOUR's reign! 7. Ev'ry note with wonder swell; Sin o'erthrown and captiv'd hell! Where is hell's once dreaded king? Where O death, thy mortal sting?

Caft all low cares of lite away,

Who left the fhining realms above,
Thefe happy feats of rest!
How much for human kind he bore,
Their peace and pardon to reftore,
Can never be exprefs'd.
