I.

HOW over-joy'd was I,

When the folemn hour drew nigh;
Summon'd to the houfe of pray'r,
Flew my foul to worship there.

1. Come, my chearful brethren said,
Let us go with holy speed;
Let us hafte with one accord;
To the temple of our LORD!
3. Running at His kind command,
There our ready feet shall ftand;
Still within the facred gate
Will we for His mercy wait.

4. Love the channels of His grace;
Reverence the hallow'd place,

Where our LORD records his name,
Stay we in Jerufalem.

5. God hath built His church below,
And, his art divine to fhew,
Each with each the parts agree,
Fram'd in perfect symmetry.

6. There the chofen tribes go up,

Teftify their Gospel hope;

Praife and blefs th' incarnate Word,

Shout the name of CHRIST, their LORD 7. Pray, my friends, and never cease, Wrestle on for Sion's peace; Make her fill your pious care, On your heart for ever bear. 8. Hail the venerable name, Lovely, dear Jerufalem!

Thee who blefs, fhall bleffed be,
Profper for their love to Thee.

9 Dwell within Thy ramparts peace,
Plenty deck Thy palaces,
JESUS fend Thee from above,
All the treasures of His love!

Thofe

Thofe fins that pierc'd and nail'd His flesh 2. He gives to breathe the vital air,
Faft to the fatal wood!

And feeds us at His board;

4 Yes, my REDEEMER, They fhall die, Has made our cup with grace o'erflow,

My heart has fo decreed; Nor will I fpare the guilty things, That made my SAVIOUR bleed. 5 Whilft with a melting broken heart, My murder'd LORD I view; I'll raife revenge against my fins, And flay the murd❜rers too.

[blocks in formation]

LOVE divine how fweet Thou art! When thall I find my longing heart All taken up with Thee? Ithirft, and faint, and die to prove The greatness of redeeming love;

The love of CHRIST to me. 2. Stronger his Love than death or hell; Its riches are unsearchable;

3.

I

The firft-born fons of light Defire in vain its depth to fee; They cannot reach the mystery,

The length, and breadth, and height.

O that I could for ever fit,

With Mary, at the Mafter's feet!

Be this my happy choice!

My only care, delight and blifs,
My joy, my heav'n on earth be this,
To hear the Bridegroom's voice!

CCLIV. On a new-born Child.
CCLIV.

O may our ever hing

H may our ever grateful hearts

To the great fov reign of the skies,
And of his mercy fing!

And with His riches ftor'd. 3. As out of darkness into light Of old all nature sprung So into life and hopes of blifs, The offspring of the womb. 4. But as the blufhing blooming rofe, And all the flow'ry tribes;

So fades the human race divine,
And like a river glides.

5. May we with caution therefore take The tranfitory joy

;

And meekly yield it to our GoD,
To fave or to destroy!

6. Not hope to grafp the empty wind, Or ftop the whirling fun

[ocr errors]

Or that the fading bliss secure

Thro' wealth and peace should run. 7. In virtue's paths, and that ftraight ro ad Which leads to realms above;

The only folid joys await

The child its parents love..

8. Grant, gracious LORD, Thy conftant aid To form the youthful heart;

I.

2.

And may the bleffings of Thy grace
Ne'er from this child depart!

CCLV. A Morning Song.

NCE more, my foul, the rifing day
Salutes thy waking eyes;

ON

Once more, my voice, thy tribute pay
To Him that rules the fkies.

Night unto night His name repeats,
The day renews the found;

Wide as the heav'n on which He fits,

To turn the feafors round.

3. 'Tis He fupports my mortal frame,

My tongue fhall speak His praife;
My fins would rouze his wrath to flame,
And yet his wrath delays.

[4. On a poor worm Thy pow'r might tread, Ard I could ne'er withstand;

Thy juftice might have crush'd me dead,
But mercy held thine hand.

5. A thoufard wretched fouls are fled
Since the last fetting fun;

And yet thou length'neft out my thread,
And, yet my moments run.]

6. Dear God, let all my hours be thine,
Whilft I enjoy the light;

Then fhall my fun in fmiles decline,
And bring a pleafing night.

I.

What now fhall be our talk?
Or rather what our pray'r?
What good thing shall we ask,
To profper this new year?
With one accord

Our hearts we'll lift;
And afk our LORD
Some new-year's gift.

No trifling gift, or fmall,

Should friends of CHRIST defire;
Rich LORD, bestow on all

Pure gold, well tried by fire;
Faith that ftands faft,
When devils roar
And love that lafts
For evermore.

CCLVII. Before Sermon.

NCE more we coine before our GoD,

Once more his bleffing afk;

may not duty feem a load,
Nor worship prove a task !

2 Father, thy quickning fpirit, fend
From heav'n in JEsu's name;
To make our waiting minds attend
And put our fouls in frame!

3. May we receive the word we hear,
Each in an honeft heart;

[blocks in formation]

Let ev'ry plant the pow'r partake,

And all the garden grow!

6. Revive the parch'd with heav'nly fhow'rs,

The cold with warmth divine;

And as the benefit is ours,

Be all the glory thine!

Of this world's vain store,

2.

The time for fuch trifles

With me now is o'er.

1. A country I've found,
Where true joys abound;
To dwell I'm determin'd
On that happy ground.
3. The fouls that believe
In Paradife live;

And me in that number.
Will JESUS receive,
4. My foul don't delay,

He calls thee away,

Rife, follow thy SAVIOUR,
And blefs the glad day.

5 No mortal doth know

;

What He can bestow
What light, ftrength and comfort s
Go after Him,

go.

THE delights, the heav'nly joys,
The glories of the place,;

Where Jesus fheds the brightest beams
Of His o'erflowing grace!

Sweet majefty and aweful love
Sit filing on His brow;

And all the glorious ranks above,
At humble distance bow.

[3. Princes to His imperial name

Bend their bright fceptres down; Domirions, thrones, and pow'rs rejoice To fee Him wear the crown.]

4. Archangels found His lofty praife,
Thro' ev'ry heav'nly street;

And lay their highest honors down
Submifive at His feet.

5. Thofe foft, thofe bleffed feet of His, That once rude iron tore;

High on a throne of light they ftand,
And all the faints adore.

6. His head, the dear majeftic head,
That cruel thorns did wound;
See what immortal glories fhine,
And circle it around.

7. This is the man, th' exalted man,
Whom we unfeen adore;
But when our eyes behold His face,
Our hearts fhall love Him more.

[8. LORD, how our fouls are all on fire To fee Thy bleft abode;

Our tongues rejoice in tunes of praife,

To our incarnate GOD!

9. And whilft our faith enjoys this fight,
Welong to leave our clay;
And with Thy fiery chariots, LORD,
To fetch our fouls away.]

§ CCLX. The God of Thunder.

The immenfe, th' amazing height,
The boundle's grandeur of our God;

Who treads the worlds beneath his feet,
And fways the nations with his nod!
2. He fpeaks; and lo all nature flakes,
Heav'n's everlafting pillars bow;

He rends the clouds with hideous cracks, And shoots his fiery arrows thro'. 3. Well, let the nations start and fly,

At the blue lightning's horrid glare;
Atheists and emp'rors fhrink and die,
When flame and noife torment the air!

4. Let noife and flame confound the skies,
And drown the fpacious realms below;
Yet will we fing the thund'rer s praise,
And fend our loud Hofannas thro'!
5. Celestial King! Thy blazing pow'r
Kindles our hearts to flaming joys;
We fhout to hear Thy thunders roar,
And echo to our father's voice.

6. Thus fhall the GOD our SAVIOUR Come,
And lightnings round His chariot play;
Ye lightnings, fly to make Him 100m,
Ye glorious storms, prepare His way!
