EVENING PRAYER.

O GOD, my heavenly Father, who hast promised Thy Holy Spirit to those who ask Thee in Thy Son's name, pour down this unspeakable blessing upon me, that my heart may be prepared by His gracious influence to offer up to Thee my evening sacrifice of prayer and thanksgiving.

O Thou Searcher of hearts, surely I have great cause to approach Thee with shame and confusion of face; I am not worthy to lift up my eyes to the Throne of Thy glorious majesty; for Thou art the high and

lofty One who inhabitest eternity, whose name is Holy, but I am sinful dust and ashes, and even in the day that is past, I must with sorrow confess that I have neither loved Thee nor served Thee as I ought. Merciful Lord, I do not presume to come before Thee, trusting in my own righteousness, but in Thy manifold and great mercies: In myself, or in my imperfeet services, there is no help, and I have no hope; but adored be Thy name, Thou hast commended Thy love to lost sinners in giving Thine only Son to be the propitiation for sin. O Lord, grant that the faith of Thy gospel may ever dwell in me, so as to purify my heart, give peace to my conscience, and influence my life. Suffer not my affections to be enslaved by the vanities of this life, but enable me to make choice of Thee for my present portion, and . my everlasting happiness. Let no false hopes, or fears, no sinful pleasures or allurements, ever draw me from the path of duty, but being endued with strength from on high, may I never be ashamed to

confess the faith of Christ crucified, and manfully to fight under His banner against sin, the world, and the devil.

O Thou almighty Being, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful creatures, be pleased to extend Thy compassion to all ranks and conditions of men. Let Thy ways be known upon earth, Thy saving health among all nations. Be especially gracious to my native country; let the President's seat be established in righteousness, and let the knowledge of Thy truth cover the land as the waters do the seas. To Thy merciful protection I humbly commit myself and all my friends this night. Refresh my wearied limbs with sleep, and grant that when the morning shall again dawn upon me, the eyes of my soul may be opened by the renewed light of Thy grace. Accept all my petitions through the prevailing name, and powerful intercession of Jesus Christ, my blessed Redeemer. Amen.

The following Prayer may be used on Sunday Morning in addition to the daily form of devotion for young persons.

GRACIOUS GOD, who hast set apart this day for sacred purposes, give me grace to improve it to the comfort of my soul.Grant me the privilege of assembling with the multitude in Thy holy Temple, and while my lips are uttering the words of prayer, keep my soul from wandering after the vanities of this life. Impress the truths of Thy gospel on my heart, and enable me to bring forth the fruits of righteousness to Thy glory and praise. Let the dew of Thy blessing descend upon Thy servants who are appointed to proclaim Thy gospel; and may the word which they preach, minister grace unto the hearers, that our Sabbaths on earth, may be the prelude of the everlasting Sabbath in Heaven, where love and praise shall no more be interrupted by sin and sorrow. Accept these my petitions through Jesus Christ our Saviour, to whom with Thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory world without end. Amen.

My dear Children before you enter upon your daily business, it is your duty to implore the blessing of Almighty God, your Maker and your Judge. Remember that His all-seeing eye beholds all your thoughts as well as your actions, and is displeased with the outward worship of the lips, in which the heart is not engaged. Let this consideration cause you to pray for the influence of the Holy Spirit, that your hearts may be filled with reverence and godly fear and that you may be enabled through the mediation of Jesus Christ our
