It will be sufficient reward for any trouble which this unpretending work may have cost him, if he have thereby contributed in any degree to lighten the labours of his brethren in the ministry, or to increase the attachment of any of her Members to the venerated Scriptural Liturgy of the Church of England.

As to the method of using this little book, the following hints may be of service :

For Family worship, begin with an Introductory Prayer" and a Confession," then take one or more of the "Petitions" (including the Collect for the Day) followed by "Intercession" (especially for the Church) and "Thanks

giving," and conclude with one of the Prayers appointed for the purpose, the Lord's Prayer and a Benediction; particular "Supplications" and "Prayers" may be added in their order, as the circumstances of the family may require.*

For Schools:-Much the same course might be followed; selecting one or more of the "Petitions' numbered 1, 2, 4, and 7, and adding one of the "Prayers" relating to Holy Scripture. Care should

however be taken not to be tediously long, as young people are often thus led to dislike a service which should be their delight. The

same remark will apply to the children and servants of a Family. Let it always be an object to render the season of prayer a season of pleasure and comfort to all engaged in it.

For Committee and similar meetings, it is suggested to begin with

For Missionary Meetings, in addition to the last, any one of the Prayers relating to the Propagation of the Gospel will be found suitable; as well as those for the Ministry of the Church, which are

especially appropriate (it need hardly be said) for Clerical Meetings.

It would be in vain to attempt a more exact enumeration of the various occasions in which such a Compilation might be advantageously used, and the object with which it is published would be still unattained, if it were necessary to shew how it might be adapted to each particular case. Let then, these few hints suffice.

It may be added that the Litany embraces all the several subjects herein contained (except Thanksgiving) and might be sometimes substituted for any other Form in Family Prayer.

It has not been thought desirable to insert any of the Prayers or

Thanksgivings on Particular Occasions, as these are easily turned to when required, and would swell the book to an inconvenient size. For the same reason are omitted the Prayers in the several " Offices," as well as those in the Occasional Services, with the exception of a few passages, which, with a little alteration, can be adapted for general use; whenever such alteration is made, it is indicated by italics or an asterisk.

In conclusion, the Editor would just observe that he is far from wishing to be supposed an enemy to the practice of extempore prayer because he advocates a more extensive use of the Prayer-book. He knows well that nothing can ex
