3 My soul cleaves heavy to the dust,
But Thou canst raise and set it free;
And then in calm and joyful trust
It soars from earth to heaven and
Thee.

4 Now in this stillness as the breath
Of prayer steals upward to the skies,
Oh, give my soul the wings of faith,
That it to Thee may gladly rise :

5 That, breaking through each fleshly link

Which binds its being to the clod, At life's clear well-spring it may drink, Rejoicing in the smile of God.

337

Amen.

"The God of peace
make you perfect in every
good work to do His
will."

I FATHER of peace, and God of love,
We own Thy power to save,
That power by which our Shepherd
Victorious o'er the grave.

2 Taught by Thine unerring Spirit! Boldly we draw nigh to God, Only in Thy spotless merit,

Only through Thy precious blood:
By Thy mercy,

Oh, deliver us, good Lord!

3 From the depth of nature's blind

ness,

From the hardening power of sin,
From all malice and unkindness,
From the pride that lurks within,
By Thy mercy,

Oh, deliver us, good Lord!
When temptation sorely presses,
In the day of Satan's power,
In our times of deep distresses,
In each dark and trying hour,
By Thy mercy,

Oh, deliver us, good Lord!

5 When the world around is smiling, In the time of wealth and ease, Earthly joys our hearts beguiling, In the day of health and peace, By Thy mercy,

Oh, deliver us, good Lord!

6 In the weary hours of sickness,
In the times of grief and pain,
When we feel our mortal weakness,
When the creature's help is vain,
By Thy mercy,

Oh, deliver us, good Lord!

7 In the solemn hour of dying,
In the awful judgment day,
May our souls, on Thee relying,
Find Thee still our rock and stay:
By Thy mercy,

Oh, deliver us, good Lord! Amen.

2 Pass me not, O gracious Father! Sinful though my heart may be ; Thou mightst spurn me, but the rather

Let Thy mercy light on me,

Even me.
Pass me not, O tender Saviour!
Let me love and cling to Thee;
I am longing for Thy favour;

When Thou comest, call for me,
Even me.

4 Pass me not, O mighty Spirit!
Thou canst make the blind to see;
Witnesser of Jesus' merit,

Speak the word of power to me,
Even me.

Have I long in sin been sleeping, Long been slighting, grieving Thee?

Has the world my heart been keepOh! forgive and rescue me, [ing? Even me.

"We will come unto him,
and make our abode with
him."

1 MY spirit longs for Thee
Within my troubled breast,
Though I unworthy be
Of so divine a Guest.

2 Of so divine a Guest
Unworthy though I be,
Yet has my heart no rest,
Unless it come from Thee.

3 Unless it come from Thee,
In vain I look around;
In all that I can see
No rest is to be found.

4 No rest is to be found,
But in Thy blessed love;
Oh, let my I wish be crowned,
And send it from above! Amen.

[less :

Even me.

Amen.

"Where I am, there shall
also My servant be."

1 LET me be with Thee where Thou
My Saviour, my eternal rest: [art,
Then only will this longing heart
Be fully and for ever blest.

2 Let me be with Thee where Thou art,
Thy unveiled glory to behold;
Then only will this wandering heart
Cease to be treacherous, faithless,
cold.

3 Let me be with Thee where Thou art, Where spotless saints Thy name adore;

Then only will this sinful heart
Be evil and defiled no more.

"Remember Thou me for
Thy goodness' sake, O
Lord.

I JESUS, meek and gentle,
Son of God most high,
Pitying, loving Saviour,
Hear Thy children's cry!

2 Pardon our offences,

Loose our captive chains,
Break down every idol
Which our soul detains ;
3 Give us holy freedom,
Fill our hearts with love;
Draw us, holy Jesus,
To the realms above;

"There I will meet with thee; and I will commune with thee from above the mercy-seat."

I FROM every stormy wind that blows,

From every swelling tide of woes,
There is a calm, a sure retreat;
'Tis found beneath the mercy-seat.

2 There is a place where Jesus sheds
The oil of gladness on our heads,
A place than all beside more sweet;
It is the blood-stained mercy-seat.

3 There is a spot where spirits blend,
And friend holds fellowship with
friend;
[meet
Though sundered far, by faith they
Around one common mercy-seat.

4 Ah! whither could we flee for aid, When tempted, desolate, dismayed, Or how the hosts of hell defeat, Had suffering saints no mercy-seat?

5 There, there on eagle wing we soar,, And time and sense seem all no

more, [greet, And heaven comes down our souls to And glory crowns the mercy-seat.

345

Amen.

"Restore unto me the joy of
Thy salvation."

I OH, for a closer walk with God,
A calin and heavenly frame,
A light to shine upon the road
That leads me to the Lamb!

2 Where is the blessedness I knew
When first I saw the Lord?
Where is the soul-refreshing view
Of Jesus and His word?

3 What peaceful hours I once enjoyed! How sweet their memory still! But they have left an aching void The world can never fill.

Return, O holy Dove! return,

Sweet messenger of rest!

I hate the sins that made Thee mourn, And drove Thee from my breast.

The dearest idol I have known,

Whate'er that idol be,

Help me to tear it from Thy throne,
And worship only Thee.

So shall my walk be close with God,
Calm and serene my frame;
So purer light shall mark the road
That leads me to the Lamb.

346

Amen.

"He is able to succour them that are tempted."

OH, help us, Lord; each hour of need

Thy heavenly succour give; Help us in thought and word and deed,

Each hour on earth we live!

Oh, help us when our spirits bleed
With contrite anguish sore;

And when our hearts are cold and dead,

Oh, help us, Lord, the more!

Oh, help us, through the prayer of
More firmly to believe; [faith,
For still the more the servant hath,
The more shall he receive.

Oh, help us, Jesus, from on high:
We know no help but Thee!
Oh, help us so to live and die

As thine in heaven to be! Amen.

2 Source of all good, Thou, gracious Lord,

Art our exceeding great reward:
How transient is our present pain!
How boundless our eternal gain!

3 With open face and joyful heart,
We then shall see Thee as Thou art;
Our love shall never cease to glow,
Our praise shall never cease to flow.
4 Thy never-failing grace to prove,
A surety of Thine endless love,
Send down the Holy Ghost to be
The Raiser of our souls to Thee.
5 O future Judge, eternal Lord,
Thy name be hallowed and adored!
To God the Father, King of heaven,
And Holy Ghost, like praise be given !

348

Amen.

"Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, Thou that leadest Joseph like a flock."

I O KING of mercy, from Thy throne on high.

Look down in love, and hear our humble cry.

2 Thou tender Shepherd of the bloodbought sheep, [keep. Thy feeble wandering flock in safety 3 O gentle Saviour, by Thy death we live;

To contrite sinners life eternal give. 4 Thou art the Bread of heaven, on Thee we feed;

[need. Be near to help our souls in time of

5 Thou art the mourner's stay, the sinner's Friend,

Sweet fount of joy and blessings without end.

6 Oh, come and cheer us with Thy heavenly grace; [face! Reveal the brightness of Thy glorious

7 In cooling cloud by day, in fire by night,

Be near our steps, and make our darkness light.

8 Go where we go, abide where we abide,

In life, in death, our Comfort, Strength, and Guide.

9 Oh, lead us daily with Thine eye of love,

And bring us safely to our home above! Amen.

349

"Create in me a clean heart,
O God."

I OH, for a heart to praise my God!
A heart from sin set free;
A heart that always feels Thy blood
So freely shed for me;

2 A heart resigned, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer's throne,
Where only Christ is heard to speak,
Where Jesus reigns alone;

3 A humble, lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean,
Which neither life nor death can part
From Him that dwells within;

4 A heart in every thought renewed,
And full of love divine,
Perfect and right and pure and good,
A copy, Lord, of Thine!

5 Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart ;
Come quickly from above;
Write Thy new name upon my heart,
Thy new,
best name of Love.

350

Amen.

"If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father."

I Ọ THOU, the contrite sinners'

Friend,

Who, loving, lov'st them to the end, On this alone my hopes depend,

That Thou wilt plead for me.

2 When, weary in the Christian race, Far off appears my resting-place, And, fainting, I mistrust Thy grace, Then, Saviour, plead for me.

3 When I have erred and gone astray, Afar from Thine and wisdom's way, And see no glimmering, guiding ray, Still, Saviour, plead for me.

4 When Satan, by my sins made bold, Strives from Thy cross to loose my hold,

Then with Thy pitying arms enfold,
And plead, oh, plead for me!

5 And when my dying hour draws near,
O'ercast with sorrow, pain, and fear,
Then to my fainting sight appear,
Pleading in heaven for me.

6 When the full light of heavenly day Reveals my sins in dread array, Say, Thou hast washed them all away;

Oh, say, Thou plead'st for me!

351

Amen

"Your life is hid with Christ
in God."

I O LAMB of God, still keep me
Close to Thy pierced side;
'Tis only there in safety

And peace I can abide.

What foes and snares surround me What lusts and fears within! The grace that sought and found me Alone can keep me clean.

2 'Tis only in Thee hiding
I feel myself secure ;
Only in Thee abiding.

The conflict can endure.
Thine arm the victory gaineth
O'er every hateful foe;
Thy love my heart sustaineth
In all its cares and woe.

3 Soon shall my eyes behold Thee
With rapture face to face;
One half hath not been told me
Of all Thy power and grace.
Thy beauty, Lord, and glory,
The wonders of Thy love,
Shall be the endless story

Of all Thy saints above. Amen.
