"Asevery man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another. 1 WE give Thee but Thine own, Whate'er the gift may be: All that we have is Thine alone, A trust, O Lord, from Thee.

2 May we Thy bounties thus
As stewards true receive,
And gladly, as Thou blessest us,
To Thee our first-fruits give.

3 Oh! hearts are bruised and dead;
And homes are bare and cold;
And lambs, for whom the Shepherd
Are straying from the fold. [bled,

4 To comfort and to bless,

To find a balm for woe,

To tend the lone and fatherless,
Is angels' work below.

5 The captive to release,
To God the lost to bring,

To teach the way of life and peace,--It is a Christ-like thing.

6 And we believe Thy word, Though dim our faith

may

be;

Lord,

Whate'er for Thine we do,
We do it unto Thee. Amen.

2 At the blest mercy-seat,
Pleading for me,

My feeble faith looks up,
Jesus, to Thee :

Help me the cross to bear,
Thy wondrous love declare,
Some song to raise, or prayer-
Something for Thee.

3 Give me a faithful heart-
Likeness to Thee-
That each departing day
Henceforth may see
Some work of love begun,
Some deed of kindness done,
Some wanderer sought and won,
Something for Thee.

4 All that I am and haveThy gifts so free

In joy, in grief, through life,

Lord, for Thee!

And when Thy face I see,
My ransomed soul shall be,
Through all eternity,

Something for Thee. Amen.

While all around him waves the golden And to each servant does the Master say,

Go, work to-day?"

2 Come, labour on!

Claim the high calling angels cannot share; [bear: To young and old the Gospel-gladness Redeem the time; its hours too swiftly fly;

The night draws nigh.

3 Come, labour on!

Away with gloomy doubts and faithless fear! [here: No arm so weak but may do service By feeblest agents can our God fulfil His righteous will.

4 Come, labour on!

No time for rest, till glows the western sky, [way lie, While the long shadows o'er our pathAnd a glad sound comes with the setting sun

"Servants, well done!"

5 Come, labour on!

The toil is pleasant, the reward is sure, Blessed are those who to the end endure; [shall be, How full their joy, how deep their rest O Lord, with Thee! Amen.

2 Work, for the night is coming!
Work through the sunny noon;
Fill brightest hours with labour;
Rest comes sure and soon.
Give every flying minute
Something to keep in store:
Work, for the night is coming,
When man works no more.

3 Work, for the night is coming!
Under the sunset skies,
While their bright tints are glowing,
Work, for daylight flies.

Work till the last beam fadeth,

Fadeth to shine no more;
Work, while the night is darkening,
When man's work is o'er.

Observant of His heavenly word And watchful at His gate.

2 Let all your lamps be bright, And trim the golden flame; Gird up your loins, as in His sight, For awful is His name.

3 Watch! 'tis your Lord's command; And, while we speak, He's near: Mark the first signal of His hand, And ready all appear.

4 Oh, happy servant, he,

In such a posture found! He shall His Lord with rapture see, And be with honour crowned.

5 Christ shall the banquet spread
With His own royal hand;
And raise that faithful servant's head
Amid the angelic band. Amen.

9.-WARFARE AND VICTORY.

373 "If we suffer, we shall also

reign with Him."

1 OH, what, if we are Christ's,
Is earthly shame or loss?
Bright shall the crown of glory be,

When we have borne the cross.

2 Keen was the trial once, Bitter the cup of woe, When martyred saints, baptized in blood,

Christ's sufferings shared below.

3 Bright is their glory now,

Boundless their joy above,
Where, on the bosom of their God,
They rest in perfect love.

4 Lord, may that grace be ours,
Like them in faith to bear
All that of sorrow, grief, or pain
May be our portion here.

Hear the victors who o'ercame ;
Still they mark each warrior's way;
All with one sweet voice exclaim,
"Watch and pray."

Hear, above all, hear thy Lord,
Him thou lovest to obey;
Hide within thy heart His word,
"Watch and pray.'

Watch, as if on that alone
Hung the issue of the day;
Pray, that help may be sent down :
"Watch and pray." Amen.

courage.

"Be strong and of a good
And the
Lord, He it is that doth
go before thee."

ONWARD, Christian soldiers,
Marching as to war,

With the cross of Jesus
Going on before!

Christ, the Royal Master,
Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle,

See, His banners go!
Onward, Christian soldiers, &c.

2 At the sign of triumph
Satan's host doth flee:
On, then, Christian soldiers,
On to victory!
Hell's foundations quiver
At the shout of praise;
Brothers, lift your voices,
Loud your anthems raise.

3 Like a mighty army
Moves the Church of God;
Brothers, we are treading
Where the saints have trod :
We are not divided;
All one body we-
One in hope, in doctrine,
One in charity.

4 Crowns and thrones may perish,
Kingdoms rise and wane,
But the Church of Jesus
Constant will remain ;

Gates of hell can never

'Gainst that Church prevail; We have Christ's own promise, And that cannot fail.

5 Onward, then, ye faithful!
Join our happy throng;
Blend with ours your voices,
In the triumph-song:
"Glory, laud, and honour,
Unto Christ the King!"
This, through countless ages,
Men and angels sing. Amen.

"Speak unto the children of
Israel, that they go for-
ward."

I" FORWARD!" be our watchword,
Steps and voices joined;
Seek the things before us,
Not a look behind:
Burns the fiery pillar

At our army's head

Who shall dream of shrinking,
By our Captain led?

Forward, through the desert,
Through the toil and fight;,
Jordan flows before us,
Sion beams with light.

2 Forward, when in childhood
Buds the infant mind;

All through youth and manhood,
Not a thought behind :
Speed through realms of nature,
Climb the steps of

grace;

Faint not, till in glory

Gleams our Father's face.
Forward, all the life-time,
Climb from height to height;
Till the head be hoary,
Till the eve be light!

3 Forward, flock of Jesus,
Salt of all the earth;
Till each yearning purpose
Spring to glorious birth:
Sick, they ask for healing,
Blind, they grope for day;
Pour upon the nations
Wisdom's loving ray.

Forward, out of error,

Leave behind the night;
Forward through the darkness,
Forward into light!

4 Glories upon glories
Hath our God prepared,
By the souls that love Him
One day to be shared ;
Eye hath not beheld them,
Ear hath never heard;
Nor of these hath uttered
Thought or speech a word:
Forward, marching eastward
Where the heaven is bright,
Till the veil be lifted,

Till our faith be sight.

5 Far o'er yon horizon

Rise the city towers,
Where our God abideth ;
That fair home is ours:
Flash the streets with jasper,
Shine the gates with gold;
Flows the gladdening river
Shedding joys untold:

Thither, onward thither,
In the Spirit's might;
Pilgrims to your country,
Forward into light!

6 To th' eternal Father

Loudest anthems raise ;
To the Son and Spirit
Echo songs of praise;
To the Lord of Glory,
Blessed Three in One,
Be by men and angels
Endless honour done!
Weak are earthly praises,
Dull the songs of night:
Forward into triumph,
Forward into light! Amen.

[blocks in formation]

From victory unto victory

His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished,
And Christ is Lord indeed.

2 Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
The trumpet-call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict
In this His glorious day!
Ye that are men, now serve Him
Against unnumbered foes;
Your courage rise with danger,
And strength to strength oppose.

3 Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
Stand in His strength alone;
The arm of flesh will fail you,
Ye dare not trust your own.
Put on the gospel armour,

4

And, watching unto prayer, Where duty calls, or danger, Be never wanting there. Stand up ! stand up for Jesus! The strife will not be long; This day, the noise of battle, The next, the victor's song. To him that overcometh

A crown of life shall be ; He with the King of Glory Shall reign eternally! Amen.

"These are they which came out of great tribulation."

1 THE Son of God goes forth to war, A kingly crown to gain;

His blood-red banner streams afar:
Who follows in His train?

Who best can drink His cup of woe,
Triumphant over pain;

Who patient bears His cross below-
He follows in His train.

2 The martyr first, whose eagle eye
Could pierce beyond the grave,
Who saw his Master in the sky,
And called on Him to save;
Like Him, with pardon on his tongue,
In midst of mortal pain,

He prayed for them that did the

wrong:
Who follows in his train?
