165.

1 DAY of Judgment! day of wonders!
Hark! the trumpet's awful sound,
Louder than a thousand thunders,
Shakes the vast creation round!
How the summons-

Will the sinner's heart confound!

2 See the Judge our nature wearing,
Clothed in majesty Divine !
Ye, who long for his appearing,
Then shall say, "This God is mine :"
Gracious Saviour-

Own us in that day for thine!

3 At his call the dead awaken,

Rise to life from earth and sea;
All the powers of nature shaken,
From his face prepare to flee :
Careless sinner-

What will then become of thee?

4 But to those who have confessed, Loved and served the Lord below,

He will say, “Come near, ye blessed,

166.

See the kingdom I bestow :

You for ever

Shall my love and glory know.

1

HOW beauteous are their feet
Who stand on Zion's hill;

Who bring salvation on their tongues,
And words of peace reveal!

2 How charming is their voice,
How sweet the tidings are!
Zion, behold thy Saviour-King,
He reigns and triumphs here.

3 How happy are our ears,

That hear the joyful sound!
Which kings and prophets waited for,
And sought, but never found.

!

How blessed are our eyes,
That see this heavenly light!
Prophets and kings desired it long,
But died without the sight.

The watchmen join their voice,
And tuneful notes employ;
Jerusalem breaks forth in songs,
And deserts learn the joy.

The Lord makes bare his arm
Through all the earth abroad;
Let every nation now behold
Their Saviour and their God.

FOURTH SUNDAY,

1 VISIT, Lord, thy habitation,
Breathe thy peace on all therein;
Peace, the foretaste of salvation,
Peace, the seal of cancell'd sin.
2 Now thy love-infusing Spirit
Shed on every heart abroad;
Raise, through thy redeeming merit,
Slaves of sin to sons of God.

3 Prince of Peace! be ever near us!
Fix in every heart thy home!
In this sweet communion cheer us,
Quickly let thy kingdom come.

4 Answer all our expectation,
Give our raptured souls to prove
Strong, abiding consolation,
Heavenly, everlasting love.
5 By thy own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By thine all-sufficient merit,
Raise us to thy glorious throne.

168.

1 HARK the glad sound-the Saviour comes, The Saviour promised long;

Let every heart prepare a throne,
And every voice a song.

2 On him the Spirit, largely pour'd,
Exerts his sacred fire;

Wisdom and might, and zeal and love,
His holy breast inspire.

3 He comes the pris❜ners to release,
In Satan's bondage held;

The gates of brass before him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

4 He comes-from thickest films of vice To clear the mental ray,

And on the eyes, opprest with night,
To pour celestial day.

5 He comes-the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure;
And with the treasures of his grace
T'enrich the humble poor.

6 Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;
And heaven's eternal arches ring
With thy beloved name.

CHRISTMAS DAY.

1 HARK! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born king;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled.
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th' angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.

2 Christ, by highest heav'n adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord;
Late in time, behold him come,
Offspring of a virgin's womb.
Veil'd in flesh, the Godhead see,
Hail th' incarnate Deity!

Pleased as man with men t' appear,
Jesus, our Immanuel here.

3 Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace,
Hail the Sun of righteousness;
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings.
Mild, he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die ;
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
4 Come, desire of nations, come!
Fix with us thy constant home†;
Rise, the woman's conq'ring seed,
Bruise in us the serpent's head.
Adam's likeness now efface,
Stamp thine image in its place;
Second Adam, from above,
Reinstate us in thy love.

170.

1 BRIGHT and joyful is the morn,
For to us a child is born;

From the highest realms of heaven
Unto us a Son is given.

2 On his shoulder he shall bear
Power and majesty, and wear,
On his vesture and his thigh,
Names most awful, names most high.
3 Wonderful in counsel he,
The incarnate Deity;

Sire of ages ne'er to cease,
King of kings, and Prince of Peace.
4 Come, and worship at his feet,
Yield to Christ the homage meet;
From his manger to his throne,
Homage due to God alone.

+ Christmas is our feast of Tabernacles, as it was at this time that our blessed Lord dwelt among us; or, as the Greek word sighifies, fixed his tabernacle among us, i. e. sojourned for a time upon earth, and veiled his glory in human flesh. But he has promised to dwell in his people for ever, by his Spirit. The time of observing the feast is later; but see Amos ix. 13.

171.

1 COME, all ye saints of God!
Publish, through earth abroad,
Jesus's fame;

Tell what his love has done,
Trust in his name alone,
Shout to his lofty throne
Worthy the Lamb !

2 Hence, gloomy doubts and fears!
Dry up your mournful tears,
Swell the glad theme:

To Christ, our gracious King,
Strike each melodious string,
Join heart and voice to sing,
Worthy the Lamb!

3 Hark how the choirs above,
Filled with the Saviour's love,
Dwell on his name!

172.

There too may we be found,
With light and glory crown'd,
While all the heav'ns resound
Worthy the Lamb!

1 ALL hail the great Immanuel's name,
Ye angels, prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown him Lord of all.

2 Crown him, ye martyrs of our God,
Who from his altar call;
Extol the stem of Jesse's rod,
And crown him Lord of all.

3 Ye saints redeem'd, of Adam's race,
From sin and Satan's thrall,
Hail him who saves you by his grace,
And crown him Lord of all.

4 Ye realms, of every tongue and name, Throughout this earthly ball;

In every language sound his fame,
And crown him Lord of all.
