Wonderful Counsellor.”

1 HE reigns! the Lord the Saviour reigns!
Praise him in evangelic strains,

Let the whole earth in songs rejoice,
And distant islands join their voice.
2 Deep are his counsels, and unknown,
But grace and truth support his throne;
Though gloomy clouds his way surround,
Justice is their eternal ground.

3 In robes of judgment, lo! he comes,
Shakes the wide earth, and cleaves the tombs!
Before him burns devouring fire!
The mountains melt, the seas retire!
4 His enemies, with sore dismay,

Fly from the sight, and shun the day;
Then lift your heads, ye saints, on high,
And sing, for your redemption's nigh.

255. The goodness of God in Spiritual mercies.
1 FROM Calvary flows a fountain cool,
Of water and of blood!

More healing than Bethesda's pool,
Or famed Siloam's flood.

2 The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day,
And there may sinners, vile as he,
Wash all their guilt away.

3 Ne'er shall that fountain's sacred stream,
Lose its all-cleansing power;

Till the whole ransom'd Church of God
Be saved to sin no more.

4 Kind Lord! the virtue of thy blood
To all our souls apply;

Grant that to thee we henceforth live,
Grant that to sin we die :-

5 Till spotless, placed at thy right hand,
Safe in the realms above;

We cast our crowns before thy throne,
And sing thy boundless love.

1 A FOUNTAIN of life and of grace,
In Christ our Redeemer we see,
For us, who his offers embrace,
For all it is open and free.
2 Jehovah himself doth invite,
To drink of his pleasures unknown;
The streams of immortal delight,
That flow from his heavenly throne.
3 As soon as in him we believe,
By faith of his Spirit we take,
And freely forgiven, receive
The mercy for Jesus's sake.

4 We gain a pure drop of his love,
The life of eternity know;
Angelical happiness prove,

And witness a heaven below.

257. The suitableness of the Gospel to man's necessities.

1 LET everlasting glories crown
Thy head, my Saviour, and my Lord;
Thy hands have brought salvation down,
And writ the blessings in thy word.

2 What, if we trace the globe around,
And search from Britain to Japan;
There shall be no religion found,
So just to God, so safe for man.

3 In vain the trembling conscience seeks
Some solid ground to rest upon;
With long despair, the spirit breaks,
'Till we apply to Christ alone.

4 How well thy blessed truths agree,
How wise and holy thy commands;
Thy promises, how firm they be;
How firm our hope and comfort stands.
5 Should all the schemes that men devise,
Assault my faith with treach❜rous art;
I'd call them vanity and lies,
And bind the Gospel to my heart.

1 FROM the cross, uplifted high,
Where the Saviour deigns to die,
What melodious sounds we hear,
Bursting on the ravish'd ear!
Love's redeeming work is done,
Come, and welcome, sinner, come!
2 Sprinkled now with blood the throne,
Why beneath thy burdens groan?
On my pierced body laid,

Justice owns the ransom paid;
Bow the knee, and kiss the Son,
Come, and welcome, sinner, come!
3 Spread for thee the festal board,
See with richest dainties stored;
To thy Father's bosom prest,
Yet, again, a child confest ;
Never from his house to roam,
Come, and welcome, sinner, come !
Soon the days of life shall end,
Lo! I come, your Saviour, friend,
Safe your spirits to convey,
To the realms of endless day:
Fly to my eternal home,

Come, and welcome, sinner, come!

259.

The effects of the Propitiation.

1 YE dying sons of men,
Deep sunk in sin and woe;
Mercy now calls again,
Its message is to you;
Ye perishing and guilty come,
In mercy's arms there yet is room.

2 No longer now delay,

Nor vain excuses frame,
Christ bids you come to-day,
Though poor and blind and lame:
All things are ready, sinners come,
For every trembling soul there's room.

3 Believe the heavenly word
His messengers proclaim;
He is a gracious Lord,

And faithful is his name!
Backsliding souls, return and come,
Cast off despair, there yet is room!
Drawn by his dying love,
Ye wandering sheep draw near,
He calls you from above,

The Shepherd's voice now hear :
Let whosoever will, now come,
In Jesu's breast there still is room!

260.

Come unto me all ye that are heavy laden.
1 COME! said Jesu's sacred voice,
Come, and make my paths your choice;
I will guide you to your home,
Weary pilgrims! hither come.

2 Hither come, for here is found
Balm for every bleeding wound;
Peace which ever shall endure,
Rest eternal,-sacred,―sure!

3 Ye who houseless, sole, forlorn,

Long have borne the world's proud scorn;
Long have roam'd the barren waste,
Weary pilgrims! hither haste.

4 Ye, who toss'd on beds of pain,
Seek for ease, but seek in vain,-
Ye, whose swoll'n and sleepless eyes
Watch to see the morning rise :-

5 Ye, by fiercer anguish torn,
In remorse for guilt who mourn;
Here repose your heavy care,
Who can a wounded spirit bear?
6 Hither come, for here is found
Balm for every bleeding wound;
Peace which ever shall endure,
Rest eternal,-sacred,―sure !

261. The evidence of Miracles and Prophecies.
1 BEHOLD the blind their sight receive,
Behold the dead awake and live,

The dumb speak wonders, and the lame
Leap like the hart, and bless his name.
2 Thus doth th' eternal Spirit own
And seal the mission of the Son;
The Father vindicates his cause,
While he hangs bleeding on the cross!
3 He dies: the heavens in mourning stood,
He rises, and appears a God!

Behold the Lord ascending high,
No more to bleed! no more to die!
4 Hence, and for ever, from my heart,
I bid my doubts and fears depart;
And to those hands my soul resign,
Which bear credentials so divine.

262. The Co-operation of the Three Persons of the sacred Trinity in the Gospel design.

1 SINNERS! turn-why will ye die?
God, your Maker, asks you why:
God who did your being give,
Made you with himself to live;
He the fatal cause demands,
Asks the work of his own hands:
Why, O thankless creatures! why
Will ye slight his love and die?
Sinners! turn-why will ye die?
God, your Saviour, asks you why:
He, who his own life did give,
That ye might for ever live;
Will you let him die in vain,
Crucify your Lord again?
Why, O ransom'd sinners! why
Will ye spurn his grace and die?
3 Sinners! turn-why will ye die?
God the Spirit asks you why:
He who all your lives hath strove,
Moved you to embrace his love-
