PSALM V.

Joy in the government of God.

I COME let us all unite our joys,
And to the Lord our voices raife:
Before his gracious prefence come
With thankful hearts and pfalms of praise.

2 He reigns; let all the earth rejoice:
For tho' thick darknefs may furround
And cloud his ways of providence,
Justice and goodness is their ground.

3 O ye that love and praife the Lord,
See as ye praise that ye obey:
Hate what he hates, and hope in him.
While ye pursue his perfect way.

4. Seeds of immortal light and blifs
For truly pious men are fown:

A joyful harvest will, at length,
Their labours and their forrows crown.

5 Then let your chearful temper fhew
The God you ferve is good and kind
Praise him for all his mercies past,
And wait with joy for those behind.

PSALM VI.

PSALM VI.

Hope in God's mercy.

1 OPPREST with grief, or guilt, or care
To God I'll raise my earneft pray'r:

Tho' funk, I ne'er can fink fo low
But thou canst hear the voice of woe,

2 Should't thou against each evil deed
In ftrict severity proceed;

By merit, without mercy, try'd
None could be clear'd and juftify'd.

3 But thou forgiveness doft proclaim,
That men may turn, and fear thy name;
To thy rich grace, O Lord, we fly,
And on thy promifes rely.

4 The frailty of our ftate he knows;
His plenteous mercy ever flows;
Ye contrite hearts, ye good and just,
In God repose your humble truft.

PSALM VII.

Greatness and goodness of God,

7 WE will extol thy facred name,
Thou king of faints and God of love:

P.

We'll

We'll bless thee daily now; 'twill be
Our work eternally above.

2 Our praises should be high like thee, Whofe greatness all our thoughts exceeds: Since thro' all ages they extend,

All fhou'd make known thy mighty deeds.

3 We'll tell the glories of thy ftate,
And thy amazing works proclaim,
That all who hear our fongs of praise
May join with us to bless thy name.

4 So, like the unexhausted spring

5

Of life and peace, their joys fhall flow;
Their tongues thy faithfulness shall fing,
And thine abounding goodness show.

Thou, Lord, art full of grace and love;
To anger flow, and glad to fpare;
To all thy creatures thou art kind,
O'er all thy tender mercies are.

6 While God from all his lower works
Receives what honours they can give;
For ever, Lord, thy better praise
Shall in our conscious homage live.

PSALM VIIL

PSALM VIII.

God our preferver and deliverer.

1 IN our profperity we say

Our mountain stands for ever ftrong:
Vain thought! it is thy favour, Lord,
Alone hath made it ftand fo long.

2 For were thy prefence once withdrawn, What troubles might our state invade ! O God, uphold us or we fall,

We live but by thy conftant aid.

3 With fickness worn, with grief oppreft
To thee we cry, for thou canft save:
Oft haft thou rais'd our finking hopes,
Our lives oft refcu'd from the grave.

4 Thine anger is but fhort; thy love,
Which is our life, doth longer stay:
Grief may continue for a night,
But comfort rifes with the day.

5 Rejoice ye then, ye faints of God,
Proclaim the praises of the Lord;
His goodness often call to mind,
And his fidelity record.

PSALM IX.

PSALM IX.

Goodness, equity, and immutability of God's character and counfels.

1 YE righteous in the Lord rejoice,
And let his praise be your delight;
For praise is lovely, and becomes
The lips of those whose hearts are right.

2 God's word is, like its author, good;
His law from all injuftice free;

His promise fure; and all his works
Are done in truth and equity.

3 Works that are juft and right enfure
His favour, and his pleasure are;
While various bleffings fill the earth,
And his good-will to all declare.

4 The vaft-extended orbs of heaven,
By his commanding word were made,
And from the Lord's creating breath,
It's numerous hoft their being had.

5 The fea's proud waves, within the shores
To which he first confin'd them, keep:
It's waters fafely are laid up

In the great store-houfe of the deep.
