4 In varied fcenes, both old and new,

5

With joy, great God, thy works we view; In praise recall thy mercies paft,

In hope thy future bounties tafte.

In holy duties let the day,

In holy pleasures, pass away:

How fweet this fabbath thus to spend
In hope of that which ne'er shall end.

PSALM XC.

The equity of the divine dispensations.

I LORD, of thy mild and equal reign
Which of thy creatures can complain?
What man a weight of duty bears
Beyond the powers and aids he shares?

2 To different tribes, thine high commands
Their lot, in various climes and lands,
By different measures, have affign'd;
And yet to all are just and kind.

3 So hath thine intellectual ray

Here fhed a full, there fainter day,
While all are shown the plain fafe road
That leads to happiness and God.

4 How favor'd we to whom are brought
The gracious truths by Jefus taught!
So bleft, and with fuch hopes infpir'd,
How much is given, how much requir❜d?

PSALM XCI.

Goodness of God to man and the inferior creatures.

THE earth and all the heavenly frame
Their great creator's love proclaim:
He gives the fun his genial power,
And fends the foft refreshing shower.

2 By him the ground its riches yields,
And plenty crowns the fmiling fields,
For man, who from his bounteous hand
Receives the gifts of every land.

3 Nor by the human race alone
Is his diffufive goodness known;
Whate'er inhabits earth, fea, air,
Partakes his univerfal care.

4 The maker and the friend of all,
He hears the ravens when they call;
And not a sparrow yields it's breath,
Till God permits the stroke of death.

PSALM XCII.

Confidence in God our shepherd.

1 AS the good fhepherd gently leads
His wandering flocks to fertile meads,
Where peaceful rivers, foft and flow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow;

2 So God, the guardian of my foul,
Does all my erring fteps control;
When loft in fin's perplexing maze,
He brings me back to wisdom's ways.

3 Tho' I should journey thro' the plains
Where death in all it's horror reigns;
My stedfast heart no ill shall fear,
For thou, O Lord, art with me there.

4 By thee with peace and plenty bleft,.
Of all I need I am still poffeft:
Thy ever-watchful providence
Is my fupport, and my defence.

5 Like all the past, my future days
Will yield new fubjects for thy praise ::
Where'er I dwell, where'er I go,
My thankful heart thy praife shall show.

PSALM XCHE

PSALM XCIII.

Acquiefcence and confidence in the unfearchable decrees of God.

I LORD, thy decrees, from human fight,
Are hid in fhades of deepest night:
Amid the lines with curious eye
Not angels would presume to pry.

2 Great God, I do not afk to fee
What in futurity fhall be:
If light and bliss attend my days,
Then let my future fongs be praise..

3

Is darkness and diftrefs my fhare?
Still let me trust thy guardian care :
Enough for me if love divine,

At length, thro' every cloud fhall fhine..

PSALM XCIV.

Praife due to God from all his creatures. I TO GOD, whofe glories are difplay'd Thro' all the earth, thro' all the skies, Be univerfal honours paid,

Let everlasting worship rife..

2 Let creatures, various as they are,,
To God united glory give:

Alike they want their maker's care,
Alike they on his bounty live.

B

3 But what can duft and afhes do?

Our praise may from the heart proceed :
While angels praife, we'll praife thee too,
And truft the grace that angels need.

PSALM XCV.

Bleffings of the gospel.

1 GOD, who his mind, to those of old,
In various times and methods, told;
By Chrift, more gloriously, difplays
His grace and truth, in later days.

2 That faithful volume which records
His character, his works, and words,
We read and in himself is giv'n,
The pledge of life, the hope of heaven.

3 Here knowledge of the nobleft kind
Expands and elevates the mind;
The heavenly doctrine, plain as true,
Inftructs, reproves, and comforts too.

4 O ye

whofe gratitude they raise,

Improve the talents that ye praise;
And aid its progrefs till the Lord
Hath bleft all nations with his word.
