5 Offer righteous sacrifices,

And put your trust in JEHOVAH.

6 Many say: "O that we might see prosperity!"
JEHOVAH! lift up the light of Thy countenance upon us!

7 THOU hast put gladness into my heart

Above theirs, when their corn and their new wine abound. 8 I lie down in peace, and fall asleep at once,

Because Thou, JEHOVAH!—

THOU alone makest me to dwell securely.

PSALM V.

1 GIVE ear unto my words, JEHOVAH !

Consider my sighing;

2 Hearken to the voice of my cry, my King and my God! For unto Thee do I pray.

3 JEHOVAH ! every morning Thou hearest my voice,

Every morning do I prepare for thy service, and watch.

4 For Thou art not a God delighting in wickedness,
A wicked man doth not sojourn with Thee.
5 Presumptuous men stand not before Thine eyes,
THOU hatest all the workers of iniquity.

6 THOU destroyest those, who speak lies;

JEHOVAH abhorreth the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

7 But as for me, through Thine abundant mercy

I enter Thy House;

I bow down at Thy holy Temple,

In reverential fear of Thee.

8 JEHOVAH! guide me, for Thy righteousness' sake; Because of those who watch me,

Make plain Thy path before me.
9 For there is no truth in their mouth,
All within them is mischief;

Their throat is an opened sepulchre,
With their tongue they speak smoothly.

10 O God! deal with them, as guilty,

Let them fail in their designs;

For their many transgressions cast them out,
Because they have rebelled against Thee.

11 But let all, who take refuge with Thee, rejoice,

Let them ever shout for joy, because Thou protectest them;
Yea, let those, who love Thy Name, exult in Thee.

12 Because Thou, JEHOVAH! dost bless the righteous,
And encompass him with Thy favour, as with a shield.

PSALM VI.

1 JEHOVAH! rebuke me not in Thine anger,
Chastise me not in the heat of Thy wrath.
2 Be gracious unto me, JEHOVAH! for I am weak;
Heal me, JEHOVAH! for my bones tremble,

3 My spirit also is greatly agitated.

But Thou, JEHOVAH !— -how long?

The same image is employed by Jeremiah v. 16. "Their quiver is as an open (opened) sepulchre," where the Prophet represents that the opening of this quiver, to take from it an arrow, is an act as intimately and certainly connected with death, as is the preparing and opening of the grave for the admission of the dead.

5 For in death there is no remembrance of Thee;

In the regions of the departed, who shall celebrate Thy praise?

6 I am wearied with my groaning;

Every night do I deluge my pillow-
Do I water my couch with my tears.
7 Mine eye wasteth away through vexation,
It groweth stiff because of all mine enemies.

8 Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity!
For JEHOVAH hath heard my wailing;

9 JEHOVAH hath heard my supplication, JEHOVAH accepteth my prayer.

10 All mine enemies shall be ashamed and greatly confounded, They shall go back, they shall, in a moment, be put to shame.

PSALM VII.

1 JEHOVAH, my God! with Thee do I take refuge.
Save me from all my persecutors and deliver me;

2 Lest they, like a lion, tear me in pieces,
While there is no one to rescue, no one to deliver.

3 JEHOVAH, my God! if I have done this

If there be iniquity in my hands—

5 "For the grave cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate thee &c.: the living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day &c." Isai. Xxxviii. 18, 19. In these and similar passages, occurring in the sacred poetry of the Hebrews, the gloomy mansions of departed spirits are represented as utterly unsuited to the voice of joy and praise. "Life and immortality" had not yet been clearly "brought to light through the Gospel.". Compare Ps. xxx. 9. LXXXViii. 10, 11, 12. cxv. 17. Compare also Ecclus. xvii. 27, 28. Baruch ii. 17.
