PSALM XXX. I WILL extol Thee, JEHOVAH! for Thou hast raised me up, 2 O JEHOVAH, my God! I cried aloud unto Thee, and Thou hast healed me! 3 O JEHOVAH, Thou hast lifted me up from the grave! THOU hast kept me alive, so that I went not down into the pit! 4 Hymn unto JEHOVAH, ye His pious worshippers! And give praise unto His holy Name. 5 Truly, He is angry but for a moment; His favour endureth through life. In the evening, sorrow may take up her abode, 6 As for me, I said in my prosperity: 66 I shall never be moved!" 7 Through Thy favour, O JEHOVAH ! THOU causedst me to stand upon my strong mountain. I was confounded! 8 Unto Thee, O JEHOVAH! did I call, Yea, unto JEHOVAH did I make my supplication: XXX. 1 raised me up-as it were from the pit of destruction. 3 Compare Ps. xvi. 10. 4 pious worshippers-This is a title given to the Israelites, distinguishing them from the idolatrous nations which surrounded them. Name-Heb. memorial. "The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations." Exod. iii. 15. “O Lord, the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee." Isai. xxvi. 8. See Ps. cxxxv. 13. 5 abode-i. e. with the pious worshippers mentioned in ver. 4. 7 Thou didst hide &c.-i. e. No sooner didst Thou withdraw from me Thy support and favour, than all my prosperity vanished. 9 "What profit is there in my blood? "In my going down into the grave? "Can dust praise Thee? 10 "Can it proclaim Thy faithfulness? Hear, O JEHOVAH! and be gracious unto me, "O JEHOVAH! be Thou my helper." 11 THOU hast turned my mourning into dancing, THOU hast loosed from off me my sackcloth, And hast girded me with gladness. 12 Therefore will I hymn Thee, and will not be silent, O JEHOVAH, my God! for ever will I praise Thee. PSALM XXXI. 1 WITH Thee, O JEHOVAH! do I take refuge, Let me never be put to shame ; Through Thy mercy deliver me. 2 Incline Thine ear unto me, Rescue me speedily, Be unto me a rock of defence A fortress to save me. 3 For my rock and my fortress art Thou! Yea, for Thy Name's sake guide me, and lead me. 4 Draw me out of the net, which they have hidden for me, For Thou art my defence; 5 Into Thy hands do I commit my life. Redeem me, O JEHOVAH, God of truth! 6 I hate those, who regard lying vanities; Yea, as for me, in JEHOVAH do I put my trust. 7 I exult and rejoice in Thy loving-kindness, Because thou hast looked upon mine affliction. THOU hast been mindful of my distresses, 8 And hast not given me up into the hands of the enemy; THOU hast caused my feet to stand in a wide place. 9 Be gracious unto me, O JEHOVAH! for I am in distress, Mine eye, my spirit, and my body waste away through vexation. 10 For my life is brought to an end with grief, And my years with moaning. My strength sinketh under my misery, Yea, my bones waste away. 11 Unto all mine enemies I am become a reproach, And unto my neighbours a burden, Yea, a terror unto mine acquaintance; Those, who see me abroad, flee from me. 12 I am forgotten, as a dead man, who is out of mind; I am become like a broken vessel. 13 For I hear the slander of many; Fear is on every side, While they sit together consulting against me While they are devising how to take away my life. 14 As for me, upon Thee, JEHOVAH! do I place my confidence; I say: "Thou art my God!" 15 My times are in Thy hand, Rescue me from the hand of mine enemies, And from my persecutors. 16 Show the light of Thy countenance unto Thy servant; Save me, through Thy loving-kindness. 5 life-Heb. breath. 6 lying vanities-i. e. idols. 8 given me up-Heb. shut me up. 12 become like-i.e. utterly neglected as being worthless. 15 my times &c.i. e. all the vicissitudes in life which will befal me are perfectly known to Thee. 52 PSALM XXXI. 17 O JEHOVAH! let me not be put to shame, For unto Thee do I call. Let the wicked be put to shame, Let them be put to silence in the grave 18 Let the lying lips be closed, Which rail against the righteous, with pride and scorn. 19 How great is Thy goodness, Which Thou hast laid up for those, who reverence TheeWhich Thou showest to those, who take refuge with Thee, Before the sons of men! 20 THOU Concealest them in Thy secret recesses, From the conspiracies of men; THOU treasurest them in Thy pavilion, Away from the strife of tongues. 21 Blessed be JEHOVAH! For He hath shown wonderfully His loving-kindness to me, As though I had been in a fenced city. 22 But as for me, while fleeing in terror, I said: "I am removed far out of Thy view!" 23 Yet truly, Thou didst hear the voice of my supplication, When I cried aloud unto Thee. 24 Love Jehovah, all ye His pious worshippers! JEHOVAH preserveth the faithful, And plentifully repayeth him, who dealeth proudly. 25 Be strong, and let your heart be firm, All ye, who wait in confidence for JEHOVAH ! 18 rail-Heb. speak with harshness. 19 showest-Heb. doest. 21 shown &c.-i. e. protected me in my flight as effectually as I could before the sons of men-i. e. have been protected by the walls of openly, so that the world must aca city. knowledge "there is a reward for the righteous man." Compare Ps. Lviii. 11. - fenced city "fenced cities, with walls, gates and bars." 2 Chron. viii. 5. 22 I am removed far &c.-Heb. I am widely separated from before Thine eyes. PSALM XXXII. 53 PSALM XXXII. 1 HAPPY he, whose transgression is pardonedWhose sin is forgiven! 2 Happy the man, Unto whom JEHOVAH doth not impute iniquity, 3 When I was silent, my bones wasted away, Through my moaning all the day long. 4 For, by day and night, Thy hand was heavy upon me, My moisture was turned into the dryness of summer. 5 I acknowledged unto Thee my sin, And I did not hide mine iniquity. I said: "I will confess my transgressions unto JEHOVAH !" 6 Upon this account, will every pious man pray unto Thee, They shall not reach him. XXXII. so as 1 forgiven-Heb. covered. not to be remembered against him. 2 no guile i. e. the man who, without attempting to excuse or palliate any wicked act of his life, pours out his whole soul in humble confession and sincere repentance before God. 3 When I was silent-i. e. Before I made confession of my sin unto God. 5 I acknowledged &c.-In this verse the Psalmist describes the happy consequences which resulted from an open acknowledgment of his guilt |
