I THOU, gracious Lord, art my defence;
On Thee my hopes rely;
Thou art my glory, and shalt yet
head on high.

Lift up my

2 Since whensoe'er in like distress
To God I made my prayer,
He heard me from His holy hill,
Why should I now despair?

3 Guarded by Him, I laid me down,
My sweet repose to take;
For I through Him securely sleep,
Through Him in safety wake.

4 Salvation to the Lord belongs,
He only can defend;

His blessing He extends to all,
That on His power depend.

O.V. 6.

I

1, 3, 4.

LORD, in Thy wrath reprove me not,

Though I deserve Thine ire:
Nor in displeasure chasten me,
O Lord, I Thee desire.

2 My soul is troubled very sore,
And vex'd exceedingly;

But, Lord, how long wilt Thou delay
To cure my misery?

3 Lord, turn Thee to Thy wonted grace,
Some pity on me take;

O save me, not for my deserts,
But for Thy mercies' sake.

I-4, 9.

THOU, to whom all creatures bow,
Within this earthly frame,

Through all the world how great art Thou!
How glorious is Thy Name!

2 In heaven Thy wondrous acts are sung,
Nor fully reckon❜d there;

And yet Thou mak'st the infant tongue
Thy boundless praise declare.

3 When heaven, Thy beauteous work on high, Employs my wondering sight,

The moon, that nightly rules the sky.
With stars of feebler light;

4 What's man, O Lord, that Thou shouldst love To keep him in Thy mind?

Man's offspring what, that Thou shouldst prove To them so wondrous kind?

5

O Thou, to whom all creatures bow,
Within this earthly frame,

Through all the world how great art Thou!
How glorious is Thy Name!

N.V. 9.

I

1, 2, 10, 11.

To celebrate Thy praise, O Lord,
I will my heart prepare;

To all the listening world Thy works,
Thy wondrous works, declare.

2 The thought of them shall to my soul,
Exalted pleasure bring;

C.M.

Whilst to Thy Name, O Thou most High,
Triumphant praise I sing.

3 All those who have His goodness proved,
Will in His truth confide;
Whose mercy ne'er forsook the man,
That on His help relied.

4 Sing praises, therefore, to the Lord,
From Sion, His abode;

Proclaim His deeds, till all the world,
Confess no other God.

HOW

[blocks in formation]

TOW long wilt Thou forget me, Lord?
Must I for ever mourn?

How long wilt Thou withdraw from me,
Oh! never to return?

2 Oh, hear, and to my longing eyes
Restore Thy wonted light;

Revive my soul, or I shall sleep
In everlasting night.

C.M.

3 Since I have always placed my trust
Beneath Thy mercy's wing,

Thy saving health will come, and then
My heart with joy shall spring.

4 Then shall my song, with praise inspired, To Thee, my God, ascend,

Who to Thy servant in distress
Such bounty didst extend.

N.V. 16.

I

8-11.

STRIVE each action to approve
To God's all-seeing eye;

No danger shall my hopes remove,
Because He still is nigh.

2 Therefore my heart all grief defies,
My glory does rejoice;

My flesh shall rest in hope to rise,
Waked by His powerful voice.

3 Thou, Lord, when I resign my breath,
My soul from hell shalt free;
Nor let thy Holy One in death
The least corruption see.

4 Thou shalt the paths of life display,
That to Thy presence lead;

Where pleasures dwell without allay,
And joys that never fade.

2nd v. 16. 1, 5, 6, 8, 11.

I

LORD, keep me, for I trust in Thee;
Be Thou my guard and guide;

Securely may I walk or rest,
If Thou art on my side.

C.M.

2 Thou art my portion, Lord; from Thee
My cup with joy o'erflows;
The safety of my guarded home,
Thy strong defence bestows.
3 Amidst a pleasant land was cast
For me the bounding line;
The goodly land of Jacob's God,
And Jacob's God is mine.
Before me, wheresoe'er I walk,
I still behold Him near;
While He upholds each step I tread,
No danger will I fear.

5 The path of endless life and light
Thy mercy shall make known,

O.V.

I

And bid me taste the joy that beams
From Thy eternal throne.

18.

1, 2, 6, 9, 10, 45.

GOD, my strength and fortitude,

Of force I must love Thee;
Thou art my castle and defence
In my necessity.

2 My God, my rock in whom I trust,
The worker of my wealth,

My refuge, buckler, and my shield,
The horn of all my health.

3 I, when beset with pain and grief,
Did pray to God for grace,

And He forthwith heard my complaint
Out of His holy place.

4 The Lord descended from above,

And bow'd the heavens most high;
