THE FAMILY REGISTER, AND THE
AUTOGRAPHS OF FRIENDS.

IN the previous pages, an effort has been made to
speak some words of counsel and comfort to various
classes on birthday occasions. Then the writer
has stood aside in order for God to speak; "day
unto day has uttered speech" expressive of infinite
love and fatherly care. It is a great pleasure to a
writer, conscious of many imperfections in his pro-
ductions, to be able to turn to any part of his
book and say: That is perfect; there is no fault
there. This can only be said when we are simply
transcribers of God's own truth. The excellent
John Newton used to say,
66 That many books were
like copper coin; very good, but a great deal of it
did not amount to much. There are," he said,
"some silver books, and a few golden ones; but
there is one book of bank-notes always available
for faith." May the reader have grace to use
aright these invaluable "notes." They may be pre-
sented again and again at the Throne of grace.
God's cheques will never get out of date, and will

never be dishonoured, seeing all are signed by "the hand that was nailed to the Cross."

The author having done his part, a few blank pages are added for the hand of affection to write upon. Here the list of family names, whether few or many, whether only just begun, or extending to children's children, may be enrolled. Here also friends may sign their names, with the day of their birth (and year too), if they please; and thus this little birthday manual will gather fresh interest around it as years roll on.

The author has never been a collector of autographs-he has had little time for that-but he has preserved the autographs of many dear friends, having taken them from letters received. (He advises others to do the same. Few things excite in him such mingled feelings as casting the eye over page after page of these signatures. Not a few of the writers are now safe at home.

It cannot be very long before the hand now writing must also be quiet in the grave. God grant that these simple pages may be used by the good Spirit to guide some into, and others along, the way everlasting.
