This is an advanced Course, and though in some instances certain members of some classes can and will make objects, utensils, etc., as fully mapped out under each event in Old Testament History in the two Courses on Stories from the Old Testament, it will not generally be found the case, particularly in this condensed course. Should teachers or scholars desire to make use of such illustrative material, they will find complete lists and suggestions in the courses above.

Maps and Drawings should however be used, and used very thoroughly. The best maps in our larger schools are made up by pupils of this advanced age. They can be made of paper-pulp, according to directions below; of kindergarten clay, and even ordinary putty. Usually the preliminary maps are made on the sand table. This last material should be used only on glass or painted boards, since the oil will run and leave disfiguring marks.

In general each class can use three kinds of maps, relief, Physical, or topographical, and historical or Biblical. Splendid guides for the first are Klemm's Pressed Relief Maps of Palestine and of Egypt (3 cts. each), Underwood's Stereoscopic Views of Palestine (17 cts. each), the Detroit Photochrome Pictures (35 cts. each, in colors), Palestine Exploration Fund's Collotype Map in colors ($1.25 mtd.), their large Clay Relief Maps, and Geo. Powell's Relief Picture Maps, printed in several sizes.

For the location of Places, etc., the Bailey Maps (2 cts. and 1ct. each) are the best, using Key Maps (at 5 cts. each) as a guide.

For historical perspective, the finest aid to knowledge

and to memory are the fifteen Littlefield color maps (15 cts. a set, 65 cts. per 100), to be filled in with crayons. They give at a glance the whole of Hebrew History.

Probably the following maps ought to be made in relief and drawn in outline during this course-Map of Western Asia (drawn), Map of Egypt and Canaan combined (drawn), Journeys of Abram (drawn and outlined in relief maps made, or on Klemm's paper maps), Journeys of Jacob, Esau, Joseph (as above), Return from Exile (route drawn and outlined on reliefs), Conquest of Canaan (sectional maps can be used here, and details well illustrated, as for example, the Battle on Plain of Esdraelon, showing how configuration of the country determined the result), Location of the Twelve Tribes (coloring a Klemm map), Extent of Empires of David and Solomon (marked on relief maps), Divided Kingdom (marked in same way). The Reviews are accomplished by the Littlefield Maps. Hektograph Inks may also be used, and maps in colors produced in quantity.

Much of this work can be done outside of the class hour, either at home, or during special week-day meetings, or a map-room may be set aside where each class can go, say for a total of three sessions each year, for the making of the relief maps, which are impossible in the class forms, unless provided with desks, chair-arms, or lap-boards.

Directions for Paper-Pulp Maps: For making paperpulp, see Maltby's Map Modeling, page 106. Vols. II. and III. of the Commission Bulletin (25 cts. each) give explicit directions for all Manual Work. The Sunday School Problem Solved (S. S. Com., 10 cts.) gives further details. Also Clay Modeling (15 cts.). The best Map Book is the Commission Atlas, 15 cts.

A half-barrel of pulp can be secured from any paper mill at small cost. It will be most satisfactory to secure a sufficient supply at the start. White Rag pulp is good, as it can be colored with egg dyes. An olive green pulp, as well as white, can be secured from the S. S. Commission. The pulp can be put back into the tub after each lesson and used over and over, by adding sufficient water. Do not have pulp too dry or too wet; a little experience will show the right consistency for quick results. Clay can be bought of the S. S. Commission, New York, at 50 cts. a pound. Plactiscine, an imported clay, made in all colors, is a new and particularly useful material for rapid molding. It sells for 40 cts. a pound through the S. S. Commission. MATERIALS NEEDED.

The Commission Atlas. 62 new maps. 15 cts.; 10 cts. in quantities.

MacCoun's Holy Land in History (Revell, Vol. II., $1.25) will give good historical outline and relief maps of the Holy Land.

The Travis Line Maps of Old Testament History. Subscription S. S. Commission. 75 cts. per set. In books, 40 cts.

Relief Map of Palestine and Egypt. Klemm. S. S. Commission. 3 cts. each.
