AURELIA. 7.6. Double.

Teach us to number our Days. O GOD, the Rock of Ages,

Who evermore hast been, What time the tempest rages,

Our dwelling-place serene: Before thy first creations,

O Lord, the same as now,
To endless generations
The everlasting thou!

Our years are like the shadows
On sunny hills that lie,
Or grasses in the meadows

That blossom but to die;
A sleep, a dream, a story,

By strangers quickly told, An unremaining glory

Of things that soon are old.

O thou, who canst not slumber,
Whose light grows never pale,
Teach us aright to number
Our years before they fail.
On us thy mercy lighten,

On us thy goodness rest;
And let thy spirit brighten

The hearts thyself hath blessed.

Lord, crown our faith's endeavor

With beauty and with grace,
Till clothed in light forever,
We see thee face to face.
A joy no language measures;

A fountain brimming o'er;
An endless flow of pleasures;
An ocean without shore.

Edward H. Bickersteth.

'There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."

OUR Father! while our hearts unlearn

The creeds that wrong thy name,
Still let our hallowed altars burn
With Faith's undying flame!
Not by the lightning-gleams of wrath
Our souls thy face shall see,
The star of Love must light the path
That leads to Heaven and thee.
Help us to read our Master's will

Through every darkening stain
That clouds his sacred image still,
And see him once again,

The brother man, the pitying friend,
Who
for human woes,
weeps
Whose pleading words of pardon blend
With cries of råging foes.

If, 'mid the gathering storms of doubt
Our hearts grow faint and cold,
The strength we cannot live without

Thy love will not withhold.
Our prayers accept; our sins forgive;
Our youthful zeal renew;
Shape for us holier lives to live

And nobler work to do!

Oliver Wendell Holmes.
