"Go, and assert your Saviour's cause; "Go, spread the myst'ry of his cross." 4 These weapons of the holy war, Of what almighty force they are, To make our stubborn passions bow, And lay the proudest rebel low! 5 Nations, the learned and the rude, Are by these heav'nly arms subdued; While Satan rages at his loss,
And hates the doctrine of the cross.
Regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
1 NOT all the outward forms on earth,
2 The sovereign will of God alone
3 The Spirit, like some heavenly wind,
4 Our quickened souls awake and rise
C. M. COTTERILL.
1 LET songs of praises fill the sky!
Sends down his Spirit from on high,
2 The Spirit, by his heavenly breath,
He raises sinners from the death
3 The things of Christ the Spirit takes, And shows them unto men;
The humble soul his temple makes,
4 Come, Holy Spirit! from above,
Oh come! with holy zeal and love
The Spirit's Influence compared to Water. 1 BLESS'D Jesus, source of grace divine, What soul-refreshing streams are thine! Oh, bring these healing waters nigh, Or we must droop, and fall and die. 2 No traveller through desert lands, 'Midst scorching suns, and burning sands, More needs the current to obtain, Or to enjoy refreshing rain.
3 Our longing souls aloud would sing, Spring up, celestial Fountain, spring; To a redundant river flow,
And cheer this thirsty land below. 4 May this blest torrent near our side, Through all the desert gently glide; Then, in Immanuel's land above, Spread to a sea of joy and love! 229. L. M. 61. C. WESLEY.
Influences of the Spirit implored.
1 WE want the spirit of power within,
Of love to God and all mankind;
And keep possession of each breast;
1 COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, With all thy quickening powers,
Kindle a flame of sacred love
2 Look! how we grovel here below,
Our souls can neither fly nor go,
3 In vain we tune our formal songs,
Hosannas languish on our tongues,
4 Dear Lord! and shall we ever lie
5 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
1 COME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove,
2 To us the light of truth display,
And make us know and choose thy way: Plant holy fear in every heart,
That we from God may ne'er depart. 3 Lead us to holiness-the road
Which we must take to dwell with God:
1 FATHER, to thee our souls we lift,
2 Mercy and grace are thine alone,
3 Thou all our works in us hast wrought,
The praise of every holy thought,
4 From thee-through Jesus-we receive
In thee, O Lord, we move, and live-
233. L. M. F. H. BURDER'S COLL.
1 COME, Holy Spirit, calm each mind,
2. Hast thou imparted to our souls
3 Still brighter faith and hope impart,
Oh! soothe and cheer each burdened heart And bid our spirits rest in thee.
1 GREAT Father of each perfect gift,
With longing eyes-and lifted hands,
2 Oh shed abroad that royal gift,
To bless our eyes with sacred light,
3 Blest earnest of eternal joy,
Declare our sins forgiven;
1 FATHER of all-in whom alone
2 While in thy word we search for thee,
3 Now let our darkness comprehend
4 Before us make thy goodness pass,
Let us in Jesus see thy face,
And die to all below.
1 GRACIOUS Spirit-Love divine!
4 Let us never from thee stray,
L. M. PRATT'S COLL
