DAILY MANNA

FOR

CHRISTIAN PILGRIMS.

"Thy words were found, and I did eat them."

[merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small]

Reprinted from an American work by Baron Stow, and

published in Boston, 1844.

NOTE.

THE design of this little compilation will be sufficiently obvious to every one who is accustomed to live, not "by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

The brief analysis which is given of each passage of Scripture, is intended, by suggesting the appropriate topics, and giving them method, to facilitate profitable reflection. These hints contribute nothing to the sweetness of that which a rectified taste has long since declared to be "sweeter than honey and the honey-comb;" nor do they add any thing to the nutritive qualities of what God has made as nutritious as it is palatable. But it is supposed that they may be of some service to those who are not yet "skilful in the word of righteousness," and whose spiritual faculties are not "exercised," "by reason of use," in the divine art of extracting the virtues of the "word of life."

If any of Zion's Pilgrims, as they pass onward through this desert to the heavenly Canaan, shall

be refreshed and strengthened by what is here supplied, the object of the compiler will be attained, and his labour abundantly rewarded.

DAILY MANNA.

JANUARY.

1. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Ps. xc. 12.

1. It is very important that we should apply our hearts unto wisdom.-2. That we may do this effectually, we must be able rightly to number our days.-3. That we may learn this art, we need a Divine Teacher.-4. That we may enjoy his instructions, we must with a docile spirit seek them. Teach me the measure of my days, Thou Maker of my frame;

I would survey life's narrow space,
And learn how frail I am.

2. And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. Luke xvii. 5.

1. Faith is capable of increase.-2. It is very desirable that it should be increased.-3. It is the prerogative of Christ, as the "Author and Finisher of our faith," to increase it.-4. It is therefore suitable that application should be made to him for this purpose.

Oh for a strong, a lasting faith,

To credit what the Almighty saith-
To embrace the message of his Son,
And call the joys of heaven our own.
