FROM I. ROM deep distress and troubled thoughts, To thee, my God, I raised my cries: If thou severely mark our faults, No flesh can stand before thine eyes. Nor shall I trust thy word in vain ; Thy promises, how firm they be! And bind the gospel to my heart. And the whole race of creatures stand 4 The earth stands trembling at thy And at thy touch the mountains smoke, Great is the Lord! what tongue can frame An honor equal to his name! 5 In thee my hopes and wishes meet, THOU All earthly joy, and earthly love, Tell me, dear Shepherd, let me know, Where doth thy sweetest pasture grow? 2 Where is the shadow of that rock Thy sweetest pastures here they be; and tears. 5 His dearest flesh he makes my food, And bids me drink his richest blood: Here to these hills my soul will come, Till my Beloved leads me home. FOR SOCIAL AND PRIVATE WORSHIP. 65 THRO THROUGH every age, eternal God, Thou art our rest, our safe abode; High was thy throne ere heaven was made, THE hour of my departure's come, I hear the voice that calls me home; Now, O my God, let trouble cease, And let thy servant die in peace. The race appointed I have run, The combat's o'er, the prize is won, And now my witness is on high, And now my record 's in the sky. 3 Not in mine innocence I trust; I bow before thee in the dust, 4 And through my Saviour's blood alone, I come, I come, at thy command, Or earth, thy humble footstool laid. Fit us to die and dwell with thee. 66 COME, weary souls, with sins distressed, Come and accept the promised rest; WHY should we start and fear to die? Fond of our prison and our clay. 3 O! if my Lord would come and meet, My soul would stretch her wings in haste, Fly fearless through death's iron gate, Nor feel the terrors as she passed. 4 Jesus can make a dying bed Feel soft as downy pillows are, While on his breast I lean my head, And breathe my life out sweetly there. LORD, I will bless thee all my days, Thy praise shall dwell upon my My soul shall glory in thy grace, Has not exposed my hope to shame. And calmed the tumult of my fears. 4 His holy angels pitch their tents Around the men that serve the Lord; O! fear and love him, all his saints, Taste of his grace and trust his word. 13 Not half so far hath nature placed To all the saints, and shall endure: He owns the ransom, and forgives The hourly follies of our lives. 2 Not half so high his power hath spread 4 His power he showed by Moses' hands The starry heavens above our head, As his rich love exceeds our praise, Exceeds the highest hopes we raise. And gave to Israel his commands; But sent his truth and mercy down To all the nations by his Son. 5 Let the whole earth his power confess, 2 Needful art thou to make me live; Let the whole earth adore his'grace; The Gentile with the Jew shall join In work and worship so divine. 73 THOU I. HOU loving Maker of mankind, Before thy throne we pray and weep: Oh strengthen us with grace divine, Duly this sacred fast to keep. 2 Searcher of hearts! thou dost our ills Discern, and all our weakness know: Again to thee with tears we turn; Again to us thy mercy show. 3 Much have we sinn'd; but we confess Our guilt, and all our faults deplore; Oh, for the praise of thy great name, Our fainting souls to health restore! 5 Hear us, O Trinity thrice blest! Needful art thou all grace to give; Needful to guide me, lest I stray; Needful to help me every day. 3 Needful is thy most precious blood; Needful is thy correcting rod; Needful is thy indulgent care; Needful thy all-prevailing prayer. 4 Needful thy presence, dearest Lord; True peace and comfort to afford; Needful thy promise, to impart Fresh life and vigor to my heart. Needful art thou to be my stay Through all life's dark and thorny way; Nor less in death thou 'lt needful be, When I yield up my soul to thee. Needful art thou to raise my dust, In shining glory with the just; Needful when I in heaven appear, To crown and to present me there. 5 6 76 GOD, thou art my God alone; A pilgrim in a land unknown, A thirsty land whose springs are dry. 2 Yet thro' this rough and thorny maze, I follow hard on thee, my God; FOR SOCIAL AND PRIVATE WORSHIP. Thine hand unseen upholds my ways, I safely tread where thou hast trod. 4 When in the watches of the night, Thee I remember on my bed, Thy presence makes the darkness light, Thy guardian wings are round my head. Better than life itself thy love, Dearer than all beside to me; For whom have I in heaven above, Or what on earth, compared with thee? 5 Praise with my heart, my mind, my For all thy mercy I will give; [voice, My soul shall still in God rejoice, My tongue shall bless thee while I live. FARE A nobler object far than you, 3 His blood redeemed my guilty soul, HEN I survey the wondrous cross, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. 2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God; HERE With rage and lightning in their eyes, All the vain things that charm me most, And every labor of his hands I sacrifice them to his blood. Shows something worthy of a God. |
