4 From the provisions of thy house
We shall be fed with sweet repast,
There mercy like a river flows,

And brings salvation to our taste.
5 Life, like a fountain rich and free,
Springs from the presence of my Lord,
And in thy light our souls shall see

The glories promised in thy word.

COD in earthly temple lays

2 Thou art my rock-thy name alone
The fortress where my hopes retreat;
O, make thy power and mercy known;
To safety guide my wandering feet.
3 Blessed be the Lord-forever blessed,
Whose mercy bids my fears remove;
The sacred walls which guard my rest,
Are his almighty power and love.
4 Ye humble souls, who seek his face,
Let sacred courage fill your heart!
Hope in the Lord, and trust his grace,

What wonders are of Zion told!

Shall there begin their lives anew:
Angels and men shall join to sing
The hill where living waters spring.

[blocks in formation]

AWAKE, my soul, in joyful lays,
And sing thy great Redeemer's
praise;

He justly claims a song from thee;
His loving-kindness, O how free!

A Here we attend thy dying feast, 2 He saw me ruined in the fall,

Thy love has spread the sacred board,

To feed the faith of every guest.
2 Our faith adores thy bleeding love,
And trusts for life in One that died; 3
We hope for heavenly crowns above,
From a Redeemer crucified.

3 Let the vain world pronounce it shame,
And cast contempt upon thy cause:
We glory in our Saviour's name,
And make our triumphs in his cross.
4 With joy we tell the scoffing age,

He that was dead has left his tomb;
He lives above their utmost rage,

And we are waiting till he come.

Yet loved me notwithstanding all;
He saved me from my lost estate;
His loving-kindness, O! how great!
Tho' numerous hosts of mighty foes,
Tho' earth and hell my way oppose,
He safely leads my soul along;

His loving-kindness, O! how strong!
When trouble, like a gloomy cloud,
Has gathered thick and thundered loud,
He near my soul has always stood;
His loving-kindness, O! how good!
5 Often I feel my sinful heart,

Prone from my Saviour to depart;
But though I oft have him forgot,
His loving-kindness changes not.

6 Soon shall I pass the gloomy vale,
Soon all my mortal powers must fail;
O may my last expiring breath,
His loving-kindness sing in death.

LORD, in thy great, thy glorious name, 7 Then let me mount and sour away,

I place my hope, my only trust:

Save me fom sorrow, guilt, and shame,
Thou ever gracious, ever just.

To the bright world of endless day;
And sing with rapture and surprise,
His loving-kindness in the skies.

Ere we can offer our complaints,
Behold him present with his aid.

2 There is a stream, whose gentle flow
Supplies the city of our God!
Life, love, and joy still gliding through,
And watering our divine abode.

3 That sacred stream, thine holy word,
Supports our faith, our fear controls;
Sweet peace thy promises afford,[souls.

Secure against a threatening hour; Nor can her firm foundation move, Built on his truth, and armed with power.

Cast out and banished from thy sight;
Thine holy joys, my God, restore,

The God of grace will ne'er despise

Look down, Ŏ Lord, with pitying eye,
And save the soul condemned to die.

Sinners shall learn thy sovereign grace;
I'll lead them to my Saviour's blood,
And they shall praise a pardoning God.

FOR SOCIAL AND PRIVATE WORSHIP. 131

FROM every stormy wind that blows, From every swelling tide of woes, There is a calm, a sure retreat, 'Tis found beneath the mercy seat. 2 There is a place, where Jesus sheds The oil of gladness on our heads; A place than all besides more sweet, It is the blood-bought mercy seat. 3 There is a scene, where spirits blend, Where friend holds fellowship with friend; [meet, Though sundered far, by faith they Around one common mercy seat. 4 Ah! whither could we flee for aid,

When tempted, desolate, dismayed?

Or how the hosts of hell defeat, Had suffering saints no mercy seat? 5 There, there on eagles' wings we soar, And sin and sense seem all no more; And heaven comes down our souls greet,

And glory crowns the mercy seat. 6 O let my hand forget her skill, My tongue be silent, cold and still, This bounding heart forget to beat, If I forget thy mercy seat. 132

LORD, how mysterious are thy ways?

How blind are we, how mean our
praise!

Tis ours to wonder and adore.
Thy steps no mortal eyes explore;

Thy purposes from creature sight
Are hid in shades of awful night;
Amid the lines, with curious eye,
Not angel minds presume to pry.
Great God! I do not ask to see

What in futurity shall be;

Let light and bliss attend my days, And then my future hours be praise. 4 Are darkness and distress my share? Give me to trust thy guardian care; Enough for me, if love divine [shine. WE bless the Prophet of the Lord,

Who comes with truth and grace ;|
Jesus, thy Spirit and thy word,
Shall lead us in thy ways.

2 We reverence our High Priest above,
Who offered up his blood,
And lives to carry on his love,
By pleading with our God.

3 We honor our exalted King;

How sweet are his commands!

He guards our souls from hell and sin,
By his almighty hands.

4 Hosanna to his glorious name,

Who saves by different ways; His mercies lay a sovereign claim To our immortal praise.

13 'Tis a broad land of wealth unknown,
Where springs of life arise;
Seeds of immortal bliss are sown,
And hidden glory lies.

How how
OW large the promise, how divine,

"I'll be a God to thee and thine,
Supplying all their need."

2 The words of his extensive love,
From age to age endure;
The Angel of the covenant proves
And seals the blessings sure.

3 Jesus the ancient faith confirms
To our great father given;

He takes young children to his arms,
And calls them heirs of heaven.

LORD, I have make thy word my 4 Our God! how faithful are his ways!

My lasting heritage;
There shall my noblest powers rejoice,
My warmest thoughts engage.

2 I'll read the histories of thy love,
And keep thy laws in sight,
While through the promises I rove,
With ever fresh delight.

His love endures the same;
Nor from the promise of his grace,
Blots out the children's name.

Awake, my voice, and loud proclaim 14 So, gracious Saviour, on my breast

His glorious grace abroad.

2 The arms of everlasting love
Beneath my soul he placed,
And on the Rock of ages set
My slippery footsteps fast.
3 The city of my blest abode

Is walled around with grace;
Salvation for a bulwark stands
To shield the sacred place.

4 Arise, my soul, awake my voice, And tunes of pleasure sing; Loud hallelujahs shall address My Saviour and my King.

[blocks in formation]

THe calls the hours his own; HIS is the day the Lord hath made, Let heaven rejoice, let earth be glad, And praise surround the throne. 2 To-day he rose and left the dead, And Satan's empire fell; To-day the saints his triumph spread,

And all his wonders tell.

3 Hosanna to th' anointed King,
To David's holy Son;

Help us, O Lord, descend and bring
Salvation from thy throne.

4 Blest is the Lord who comes to men
With messages of grace;
Who comes in God his Father's name,
To save our sinful race.

5 Hosanna in the highest strains

The church on earth can raise;
The highest heavens, in which he
Shall give him nobler praise. [reigns,

W let our cheerful eyes survey
Our great High Priest above;

And celebrate his constant care,
And sympathetic love.

2 The names of all his saints he bears, Deep graven on his heart;

Nor shall the meanest Christian say, That he hath lost his part.

May thy dear name be worn: A sacred ornament and guard, To endless ages borne.

141

LAS! and did my Saviour bleed,
And did my Sovereign die?

Would he devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

2 Thy body slain, dear Jesus, thine,
And bathed in its own blood,
While all exposed to wrath divine,
The glorious sufferer stood!

3 Was it for crimes that I had done,
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!

4

3 Those characters shall fair abide,
Our everlasting trust, [crowns,
When gems, and monuments, and]
Are mouldered down to dust.

Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut his glories in,

When God, the mighty Maker, died,
For man, the creature's sin.

5 Thus might I hide my blushing face,
While his dear cross appears,
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt my eyes to tears.

6 But drops of grief can ne'er repay
The debt of love I owe:
Here, Lord, I give myself away;
"Tis all that I can do.

142

LOVE to steal awhile away And spend the hours of setting day From every cumbering care; In humble, grateful prayer.

2 I love in solitude to shed

The penitential tear, And all his promises to plead, Where none but God can hear. 3 I love to think on mercies past; And future good implore, And all my cares and sorrows cast On him whom I adore.

4 I love by faith to take a view

5

Of brighter scenes in heaven; The prospect does my strength renew, While here by tempests driven.

Thus, when life's toilsome day is o'er,
May its departing ray

Be calm as this impressive hour,
And lead to endless day.
