Cat have obtained the prize;
YOME, let us join our friends above,
And on the eagle wings of love,
To joy celestial rise.

2 Let saints below his praises sing,
With those to glory gone;
For all the servants of our King,
In heaven and earth, are one.
3 One family, we dwell in him,

One church above, beneath:
Though now divided by the stream,
The narrow stream of death.

4 One army of the living God,

To his commands we bow;

Part of the host have crossed the flood,
And part are crossing now.

5 Dear Saviour, be our constant guide;
Then when the word is given,

Bid the cold waves of death divide,
And land us safe in heaven.

4 To heaven, the place of his abode,
He brings my weary feet;
Shows me the glories of my God,
And makes my joys complete.

246

JESUS, in sickness and in pain,

Be near to succor me,
My sinking spirit still sustain;
To thee I turn, to thee.

2 When cares and sorrows thicken round,
And nothing bright I see,

In thee alone can help be found;
To thee I turn, to thee.

3 Should strong temptations fierce assail,
As if to ruin me,

4

5

Then in thy strength will I prevail,
While still I turn to thee.

When past transgressions fearful rise
Before my memory,

I'll plead thy perfect sacrifice,

Through all my pilgrimage below,
And turn to thee, to thee.
Whate'er my lot may be,

In joy or sadness, weal or woe,
Jesus, I'll turn to thee.

For Children only.

EAR Saviour, ever at my side,

DEAR

How loving thou must be,

To leave thy home in heaven to guard
A little child like me.

Thy beautiful and shining face

I see not, tho' so near;

The sweetness of thy soft, low voice,
I am too deaf to hear.

3 But I have felt thee in my thoughts,
Fighting with sin for me;

Mon my Redeemer's brow;

AJESTIC sweetness sits enthroned 4

His head with radiant glories crowned,
His lips with grace o'erflow.

2 He saw me plunged in deep distress,
He flew to my relief;

For me he bore the shameful cross,
And carried all my grief.

3 To him I owe my life, and breath,
And all the joys I have:
He makes me triumph over death,
And saves me from the grave.

And when my heart loves God, I know
The sweetness is from thee.
And when I pray, thou prayest too;
Thy prayer is all for me;

But when I sleep, thou sleepest not,
But watchest patiently.

5 Then for thy sake, dear Saviour, now
More humble will I be;

And as thou lov'st me day by day,
I ever will love thee.

6 And thou in life's last hour wilt give
A fresh supply of grace,
And afterwards wilt let me see
Thy beautiful, bright face.

IN vain we seek for peace with God

By methods of our own:
Nothing, O Saviour! but thy blood
Can bring us near the throne.

2 The threatenings of the broken law
Impress the soul with dread:
If God his sword of vengeance draw,
It strikes the spirit dead.

3 But thine illustrious sacrifice

Hath answered these demands; And peace and pardon from the skies Are offered by thy hands.

4 'Tis by thy death, we live, O Lord! 'Tis on thy cross we rest: Forever be thy love adored, Thy name forever blessed.

Their harmony of tongues.

2 Great is the mercy of the Lord,
He gives his children food;

And, ever mindful of his word,
He makes his promise good.

THE Lord himself, the mighty Lord, 3 His Son, the great Redeemer, came

Vouchsafes to be my guide;

The shepherd, by whose constant care
My wants are all supplied.

2 In tender grass he makes me feed,
And gently there repose;
Then leads me to cool shades, and
Refreshing water flows.

His ways are just and pure.

They that would grow divinely wise,
Must with his fear begin;

Our fairest proof of knowledge lies
In hating every sin.

LORD, I approach the mercy-seat,
Where thou dost answer prayer';
There humbly fall before thy feet,
For none can perish there.

2 Thy promise is my only plea;

With this I venture nigh:
Thou callest burdened souls to thee,
And such, O Lord, am I.

8 Bowed down beneath a load of sin,
By Satan sorely pressed,
By war without, and fear within,
I come to thee for rest.

4 Be thou my shield and hiding-place;
That, sheltered near thy side,
I may my fierce accuser face,

And tell him thou hast died.

ONCE more, my soul, the rising day
Salutes thy waking eyes;

Once more, my voice, thy tribute pay
To him that rules the skies.

2 'Tis he supports my mortal frame,
My tongue shall speak his praise;
My sins would rouse his wrath to flame,
And yet his wrath delays.

DREAD Sovereign, let my evening

Like holy incense rise!
Assist the offerings of my tongue,
To reach the lofty skies.

[song

2 Through all the dangers of the day,
Thy hand was still my guard;
And still to drive my wants away,
Thy mercy stood prepared.

3 Perpetual blessings from above,
Encompassed me around;

But O! how few returns of love
Has my Creator found!

14 What have I done for him who died
To save my wretched soul?

5 Oh, wondrous love!-to bleed and die, How are my follies multiplied,

To bear the cross and shame, That guilty sinners, such as I, Might plead thy gracious name.

253

Fast as my minutes roll!

5 Lord, with this guilty heart of mine,
To thy dear cross I flee,

And to thy grace my soul resign,
To be renewed by thee.

I'll lay me down to rest,
As in the embraces of my God,
Or on my Saviour's breast.

He bids the vapors rise;

Lightning and storm, at his command,
Sweep through the sounding skies.

Ye nations, know the living God,
Serve him with faith and fear;
He makes the churches his abode,
And claims your honors there.

How high thy wonders rise! [signs,

Then will he own my worthless name,
And in the new Jerusalem,
Before his Father's face,

Appoint my soul a place.

2 But when we view thy strange design, OPPRESSED with fear, oppressed

To save rebellious worms;

Where vengeance and compassion join
In their divinest forms;—

3 Our thoughts are lost in reverent awe;
We love, and we adore:

The first archangel never saw
So much of God before.

4 Now the full glories of the Lamb
Adorn the heavenly plains:
Bright seraphs learn Immanuel's name,
And try their choicest strains.

5 O may I bear some humble part,
In that immortal song!
Wonder and joy shall tune my heart,
And love command my tongue.

with grief,

To God I breathed my cry;
His mercy brought divine relief,
And wiped my tearful eye.

2 His mercy chased the shades of death,
And snatched me from the grave;
O may his praise employ that breath
Which mercy deigns to save.

3 Come, O ye saints, your voices raise
To God in grateful songs;
And let the memory of his grace
Inspire your hearts and tongues.
4 Its deepest gloom when sorrow spreads
And light and hope depart;
His smile celestial morning sheds,
And joy revives the heart.

5 Then let my utmost glory be,
To raise thy honors high;
Nor let my gratitude to thee,
In guilty silence die.

O' FOR a heart to praise my God, 6 To thee, my gracious God, I raise

A heart from

A heart that always feels thy blood,
So freely shed for me.

2 A heart resigned, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer's throne;

Where only Christ is heard to speak;
Where Jesus reigns alone:

3 A heart in every thought renewed,
And full of love divine;

Holy, and right, and pure, and good,
A copy, Lord, of thine.

261

Ior to defend his cause,
M not ashamed to own my Lord,
Maintain the honor of his word,
The glory of his cross.

2 Jesus, my God, I know his name,
His name is all my trust;

Nor will he put my soul to shame,
Nor let my hope be lost.

My thankful heart and tongue;
O be thy goodness and thy praise
My everlasting song.

THE

HERE is a house not made with
Eternal and on high; [hands
And here my spirit, waiting, stands,
Till God shall bid it fly.

2 Shortly this prison of my clay
Must be dissolved and fall;
Then, O my soul, with joy obey
Thy heavenly Father's call.
3 'Tis he, by his almighty grace,
That forms thee fit for heaven;
And, as an earnest of the place,
Has his own Spirit given.

4 We walk by faith of joys to come;
Faith lives upon his word;
But while the body is our home,
We're absent from the Lord.

3 Firm as his throne his promise stands, 5 'Tis pleasant to believe thy grace,

And he can well secure

What I've committed to his hands,

Till the decisive hour.

But we would rather see;

We would be absent from the flesh,
And present, Lord, with thee.
