I have drawn largely upon Christian experience in this discussion, for, as Mr. Wesley very justly remarks, "The objection against the sufficiency of experience to prove a doctrine not found in the Scriptures does not affect this question, for it has been shown that this doctrine is founded on Scripture. Therefore, experience is properly alleged to confirm it."

In giving this humble effort to the public I cannot but feel many misgivings. I have all confidence in the subject, but little in my own ability to furnish a work that shall be sufficiently attractive in style and convincing in argument to insure a candid and profitable perusal. It is, however, sent forth with fervent prayer and earnest desire that it may lead souls to the possession of the great salvation.

I desire that the reader will turn away

from any defects in the style, and consider simply the truth as here presented. In the language of one, now in the "spirit land," in regard to a production quite unlike this, we would say, "If any one, already predisposed to criticism, should, upon the appearance of this humble work, detect in himself returning symptoms, it is absolutely necessary, in order to any good results, that his heart should be filled with love to God and good will to man."

I have endeavored to keep close to the Wesleyan theory of holiness regarding it as the only scriptural theory; quoting largely from Mr. Wesley's sermons, journals, letters, etc.

I have taken much pains to ascertain Mr. Wesley's mature views on certain controverted points, such as, the time when a soul may be wholly sanctified; to what

extent it should be publicly professed; in

what manner and to what extent it should be preached; its connection with and relation to revivals of religion, etc.

May the great Head of the Church bless both author and reader, and bring them to that heaven, into which nothing enters that defileth, the only preparation for which being "Holiness unto the Lord." W. MCDONALD.

PROVIDENCE, Sept., 1860.
