PREFACE.

IN asking, according to editorial custom from time immemorial, an audience of our readers, at the end of the year, we feel a degree of awkwardness, arising from the short acquaintance we have enjoyed with them, and the recent opportunities with which we have been favoured of fully stating our views and intentions.

And yet the very shortness of the period since we first introduced ourselves to the favourable regard of our readers, supplies us with a powerful motive to gratitude; for already have very many condescended to receive our Magazine into favour, and to encourage us by their kindest smiles. We hope that they will not withdraw their regard, but that each subscriber will obtain for us at least one more, that so we may be enabled to expend upon the work more labour, and obtain the assistance of others. We have ascertained enough of the public feeling to be satisfied as to the final success of such an undertaking, and we assure our friends that no efforts shall be wanting on our part to furnish, as far as our humble talents will permit, an important and valuable "FAMILY MAGAZINE."

It may be desirable to state, that our volume has been closed at this early period, for the sake of commencing another with the new year, and to accommodate many friends who may desire to commence an acquaintance with it at that time.

We are fully aware, that at a time when periodicals are very numerous, and the public taste for them is thought to be on the decline, no ordinary effort will be required to raise our work to the respectability and circulation that we aspire to. But we are firmly persuaded that correct information, presented in a simple
