4 There ftreams of endless pleasure flow, And full discov'ries of thy grace, (Which we but tafted here below) Spread heav'nly joys through all the place.

PSALM XVI. 1-8. 1ft Part. C.Metre. Support and counfel from GOD, without merit. AVE me, O Lord, from ev'ry foe: In thee my truft I place,

[ocr errors]

Though all the good, that I can do,
Can ne'er deferve thy grace.

2 Yet if my God prolong my breath,
The faints may profit by't;
The faints, the glory of the earth,
The men of my delight.

3

Let Heathens to their idols hafte,

And worship wood or stone;

But my delightful lot is caft

Where the true God is known.

4 His hand provides my conftant food;
He fills my daily cup;
Much am I pleas'd with prefent good,
But more rejoice in hope.

5 God is my portion and my joy!
His counfels are my light:
He gives me fweet advice by day,
And gentle hints by night.

6 My foul would all her thoughts approve
To his all-feeing eye:

Nor death nor hell my hopes fhall move,
While fuch a friend is nigh.

PSALM XVI. 2d Part. Com. Metre.

The death and refurrection of Chrift.

“I

I " SET the Lord before my face, "He bears my courage up; "My heart and tongue their joy exprefs, "My flefh fhall rest in hope.

"My fpirit, Lord, thou wilt not leave
"Where fouls departed are;
"Nor quit my body to the grave
"To fee corruption there.

"Thou wilt reveal the path of life,
"And raise me to thy throne :
"Thy courts immortal pleasure give ;
"Thy prefence, joys unknown."

4 [Thus, in the name of Chrift the Lord,
The holy David fung,
And providence fulfils the word
Of his prophetic tongue.

5 Jefus, whom ev'ry faint adores,
Was crucify'd and flain;
Behold the tomb its prey restores!
Behold, he lives again!

6 When fhall my feet arife and ftand
On heav'n's eternal hills?

There fits the Son at God's right hand,
And there the Father fmiles.]

PSALM XVII. ver. 13,&c. Short Metre.
Portion of faints and finners; or, hope and despair in death.

I

ARISE, my gracious God,

And make the wicked flee ;

They are but thy chastifing rod
To drive thy faints to thee.

Behold, the finner dies,

His haughty words are vain :
Here in this life his pleafure lies,
And all beyond is pain.

Then let his pride advance,
And boaft of all his ftore;
The Lord is my inheritance,
My foul can with no more.
I fhall behold the face

Of my forgiving God;

And ftand complete in righteousness,
Wafh'd in my Saviour's blood.

There's a new heav'n begun
When I awake from death,
Dreft in the likeness of thy Son,

And draw immortal breath!

PSALM XVII. Long Metre. The finner's portion and faint's hope; or, the heaven of feparate fouls, and the resurrection.

"LORD, 1 am thine; but thou wilt prove

My faith, my patience, and my love :

When men of spite against me join,
They are the fword, the hand is thine.

2 Their hope and portion lie below;
'Tis all the happiness they know ;
'Tis all they feek: they take their shares,
And leave the reft among their heirs.

3 What finners value, I refign;
Lord, 'tis enough that thou art mine ;
I fhall behold thy blissful face,
And ftand complete in righteousness.

4

This life's a dream, an empty

show ;

But the bright world to which I go Hath joys fubftantial and fincere; When fhall I 'wake and find me there? 50 glorious hour! O bleft abode ! I fhall be near and like my God; And flesh and fin no more control The facred pleasures of the foul. 6 My flesh shall flumber in the ground, 'Till the laft trumpet's joyful found: Then burft the chains with fweet furprise, And in my Saviour's image rife.

PSALM XVIII. 1ft Part. Long Metre.

Ver. 1-6, 15-18.

Deliverance from despair; or, temptations overcome. I HEE will I love, O Lord, my ftrength, My rock, my tow'r, my high defence; Thy mighty arm thall be my truft,

TH

For I have found falvation thence.

grave
Stood round me with their dismal shade;
While floods of high temptations rofe,
And made my finking foul afraid.

I faw the op'ning gates of hell,
With endless pains and forrows there,
Which none but they that feel can tell,
While I was hurry'd to defpair.

4 In my diftrefs, I call'd my God,
When I could scarce believe him mine;
He bow'd his ear to my complaint;
Then did his grace appear divine.

5 [With fpeed he flew to my relief,
As on a cherub's wing he rode;
Awful and bright as light'ning fhone
The face of my Deliv'rer, God.
6 Temptations fled at his rebuke,
The blaft of his Almighty breath;
He fent falvation from on high,

And drew me from the deeps of death:] 7 Great were my fears, my foes were great; Much was their strength, and more their rage; But Chrift, my Lord, is conqu'ror ftill, In all the wars that devils wage. 8 My fong forever fhall record That terrible, that joyful hour; And give the glory to the Lord, Due to his mercy and his pow'r.

PSALM XVIII. 20-26. 2d Part. L.Met.
Sincerity proved and rewarded.

I ORD, thou haft feen my foul fincere,
Haft made thy truth and love appear ;
Before mine eyes I fet thy laws,
And thou hast own'd my righteous cause.
2 Since I have learn'd thy holy ways,
I've walk'd upright befo: thy face:
Or, if my feet did e'er depart,
'Twas never with a wicked heart.

3 What fore temptations broke my rest!
What wars and strugglings in my breaft!
But through thy grace that reigns within,
I guard againft my darling fin.

4 That fin that close besets me ftill, That works and strives against my will;
