"Ere fin was born, or Adam's duft
"Was fashion'd to a man.

"Then come, receive my grace,
"Ye children, and be wife;

"Happy the man that keeps my ways, "The man that fhuns them dies."

HYMN XCIII. Long Metre. Chrift, or Wifdom obeyed,or refifted. Prov. viii. 34--36. THU

'HUS faith the wisdom of the Lord, "Blefs'd is the man that hears my word; "Keeps daily watch before my gates, "And at my feet for mercy waits. 2 "The foul that feeks me, shall obtain "Immortal wealth, and heav'nly gain; "Immortal life is his reward,

"Life, and the favour of the Lord.

3 "But the vile wretch that flies from me,
"Doth his own foul an injury;

"Fools, that againft my grace rebel,
“Seek death, and love the road to hell."

HYMN XCIV. Common Metre. Juflification by Faith, not by Works; or, the Law condemns, Grace juftifies. Rom. iii. 19—22.

I

VAI
AIN are the hopes the fons of men

On their own works have built;

Their hearts by nature all unclean,
And all their actions guilt.

2 Let Jew and Gentile ftop their mouths,
Without a murm'ring word,

And the whole race of Adam stand
Guilty before the Lord.

3 In vain we ask God's righteous law
To justify us now,

Since to convince and to condemn
Is all the law can do.

4 Jefus, how glorious is thy grace
When in thy name we truft!
Our faith receives a righteoufnefs
That makes the finner juft.

HYMN XCV. Common Metre.
Regeneration. John i. 13. and iii. 3, &c.
OT all the outward forms on earth,
Nor rites that God has giv'n,
Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth,
Can raife a foul to heav'n.

NOT

2 The fov'reign will of God alone Creates us heirs of

grace; Born in the image of his Son, A new peculiar race.

3 The Spirit, like fome heav'nly wind,
Blows on the fons of flesh,

New-models all the carnal mind,
And forms the man afresh.

4 Our quicken'd fouls awake and rife
From the long fleep of death;
On heav'nly things we fix our eyes,
And praise employs our breath.

I

HYMN XCVI. Common Metre. Election excludes Boafting, 1 Cor. i. 26—31.

B But few of Loble race,

UT few among the carnal wife,

Obtain the favour of thine eyes,
Almighty King of grace!

2 He takes the men of meanest name
For fons and heirs of God;

And thus he pours abundant shame
On honourable blood..

3 He calls the fool, and makes him know
The myft'ries of his grace;
To bring afpiring wifdom low,
And all its pride abase.

4 Nature has all its glories loft,

When brought before his throne; No flesh fhall in his prefence boast, But in the Lord alone.

HYMN XCVII. Long Metre.

Chrift our Wisdom, Righteousness, &c. 1 Cor. i. 30.

I

B We lie till Chrift reftores the light;

URY'D in fhadows of the night,

Wisdom defcends to heal the blind,
And chafe the darkness of the mind.

2 Our guilty fouls are drown'd in tears,
Till his atoning blood appears:
Then we awake from deep distress,
And fing, The Lord our Righteousness.
3 Our very frame is mix'd with fin,
His fpirit makes our natures clean;
Such virtues from his fuff'rings flow,
At once to cleanse and pardon too.
4 Jefus beholds where Satan reigns,
Binding his flaves in heavy chains;
He fets the pris'ners free, and breaks
The iron bondage from our necks.

5 Poor helpless worms in thee poffefs
Grace, wisdom, pow'r and righteousness;
Thou art our mighty All, and we
Give our whole felves, O Lord, to thee.
HYMN XCVIII. Short Metre.

HOW

The fame.

row heavy is the night
That hangs upon our eyes,

'Till Chrift with his reviving light
Over our fouls arife!

2 Our guilty fpirits dread

3

[ocr errors]

To meet the wrath of heav'n';
But in his righteousness array'd
We fee our fins forgiv'n.

Unholy and impure

Are all our thoughts and ways,
His hands infected nature cure
With fanctifying grace.

4 The pow'rs of hell agree
To hold our fouls in vain ;
He fets the fons of bondage free,
And breaks the curfed chain.
Lord, we adore thy ways,
To bring us near to God;
Thy fov'reign pow'r, thy healing grace,
And thine atoning blood.

HYMN XCIX. Common Metre.

Stones made the Children of Abraham; or, Grace not conveyed by religious Parents. Matt. iii. 9.

VAL

TAIN are the hopes that rebels place Upon their birth and blood, Defcended from a pious race, (Their fathers now with God.)

2 He from the caves of earth and hell
Can' take the hardest stones,

And fill the houfe of Abr'am well
With new created fons.

3 Such wond'rous pow'r doth he poffefs,
Who form'd our mortal frame,
Who call'd the world from emptiness;
The world obey'd, and came.

HYMN C. Long Metre.

Believe, and be faved. John iii. 16-18.

OT to condemn the fons of men

NOT Did Chrift the Son of God appear:

No weapons in his hands are feen, No flaming fword, nor thunder there. 2 Such was the pity of our God,

He lov'd the race of man fo well, He fent his Son to bear our load Of fins, and fave our fouls from hell. f 3 Sinners, believe the Saviour's word, Truft in his mighty name, and live; A thousand joys his lips afford, His hands a thoufand bleffings give. 4 But vengeance and damnation lies On rebels who refuse his grace; Who God's Son defpife, beloved The hottest hell fhall be their place. HYMN CI. Long Metre.

Joy in Heaven for a repenting Sinner. Luke xv. 7, 10. HO can defcribe the joys that rise,

W Through all the courts of paradife,

To fee a prodigal return,

To fee an heir of glory born?
